OMAHA, Neb. – Pitching dominated as the Winona State baseball team used a combined shutout to beat St. Cloud State 2-0 Saturday afternoon in the NSIC opener.
Will Lundquist (1-0) took to the hill for his fourth start of the season and was workmanlike while earning his first win of the season. The sophomore pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up seven hits while walking one and fanning one. Lundquist's season ERA sits at an impressive 1.53 through 17.2 innings pitched on the season.
Pitching was the story on both sides of the plate, as Huskies ace Kyle Fischer went the distance while giving up just three hits, but a pair of Warrior runs.
WSU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom half of the fourth. Michael Hommes singled to lead off the inning, then later scored when Jesus Cazares hit a RBI single to bring him home for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained a 1-0 pitchers' duel until the seventh when Travis Evanson led off the frame with his first home run of the season to add some insurance, but it would not be needed as the Warriors held on for the 2-0 victory.
Joseph Kubera pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief of Lundquist, and Scott Freiburger followed up with an equally effective ninth inning to earn his third save of the year.
Winona State (4-7, 1-0 NSIC) returns to the diamond in Omaha Sunday for a doubleheader with the Huskies with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
