SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Strong starting pitching performances on Sunday allowed for Augustana baseball to sweep the twin bill against Northern State. The Vikings won game one 6-1 in seven innings followed by a 4-2 victory in the second game. Augustana took the series three games to one against the Wolves in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.

With the two wins on Sunday, The Vikings improved their record to 11-7 (3-1 NSIC) on the season. Northern State dropped back to .500 at 7-7 (1-3 NSIC) with the losses.

Game One

Kye Winter (2-0) recorded his first complete game of the season in the year. Winter shook off a rough start in the first winning and really dialed in after that, going the full seven innings while giving up just one run on six hits. The senior from Willow Lake, S.D. also tied his career high with nine strikeouts for the Vikings.

Tony Viger swung a hot bat in the win for Augustana. Viger added more doubles to increase his team-leading total to 10 already on the year. The former O'Gorman High School star drove in runs for the Vikings.

Alex Fink's 2 for 2 game pushed his multi-hit streak to four games. Fink also had a RBI and scored two runs.

The Wolves came out and took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Winter drilled Trevor Spencer to score Eric O'Bryan from third with the bases loaded. It was an inning that saw Winter give up two hits and hit two batters.

Augustana responded from the rough start with a four-run offensive barrage in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Jack Goihl capped off the big inning for the Vikings with a ground to second base that drove in Fink from third base.

Winter really found his groove in the top of the third inning, retiring the side which included two strikeouts and a pop up to second base to start off the inning.

Augustana added two more runs to its total to make it a 6-1 game in the bottom of the fifth. Fink started things off with a one-out triple to right center field. Goihl brought in Fink in the next at-bat with a single to right field. After a Winter fly out to left field, Jake Petersen singled through the right side of the infield to score Goihl from second base.

Winter closed game one in the top of the seventh inning, giving up just one hit and striking out the rest of Northern State batters for the 6-1 Viking win.

Game Two

Bennett Johnson (2-2) picked up another win for Augustana with a strong pitching performance by the senior. Johnson went seven innings and gave up three earned runs in the win.

Derek Quame notched his fourth save of the year after coming in the ninth inning and secured the Viking win.

Goihl and Jacob James each had two hits for Augustana in the victory.

Viger went 1 for 4 in the second game. The senior's lone hit though was another double, pushing his total to 11 in 18 games. Viger finished with one RBI and scored a run for the Vikings.

Augustana jumped out to a 2-0 lead after through three innings after James grounded into a double play that scored Petersen from third base.

Johnson was in complete control early in the contest, giving up just one hit in his first three innings of work.

NSU made it a 2-1 game in the top of the fourth inning on a Robert Fahlin sac fly to center field that scored Riley Shintaffer from third base.

A Goihl RBI single through the left side of the infield scored Viger, who doubled down the left field line to open up the inning, from third base in the bottom half of the fourth, making it 3-1 in favor of the Vikings.

Augustana got another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Marcus O'Neill sac fly to left field that brought in Zach Dibble from third base.

The Wolves made it 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning after Fahlin reached base on an error, allowing for Matt Stubbs to score an unearned run from first base.

Cole Jenkins made an appearance in the eighth, pitching a scoreless inning for the Vikings. Jenkins walked just one batter but gave up no hits and finished his inning striking out Stubbs on four pitches.

Quame came in the ninth inning and never gave Northern State the chance to make a rally, pitching a 1-2-3 inning to give Augustana the win and pick up his fourth save of the season.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Winona State beginning at 2 p.m.
