WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State softball team moved its winning streak to ten games with a pair of victories over Minnesota State Tuesday in Winona.

The Warriors received another lights-out pitching showing from Ashley Walker to win the opener 2-1 in eight innings before combining a strong performance in the circle from Hanna Lythberg with some offensive fireworks to win the nightcap 10-2 in five innings.

The victories move the Warriors just one game in the loss column out of first place in the NSIC standings while snapping Minnesota State's 22 game winning streak. WSU is 30-6 overall and 13-3 in NSIC play, the 13th consecutive year the program has reached the 30 victory mark.

The opening game was a pitcher's duel throughout, with both starters combining to give up just 11 hits while striking out seven in the contest. Walker moved her record to 10-4 on the year, throwing a complete game while giving up just four hits and a single unearned run.

Minnesota State was able to strike first, scoring one in the top of the third on a RBI double by Kelly Wood. The Warriors got the run back in the fifth as Jessica Kullmann launched a pitch over the fence for a solo home run.

Neither team would score in the sixth or seventh innings, setting up a dramatic extra inning finish. Walker and Morgan Lintz both walked to put a pair of runners on for WSU in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for freshman Allyson O'Herron who ended the game with a walk-off RBI single.

The Warriors picked things up offensively in the second game, scoring three in the first, two in the second and five in the third to hold a 10-1 advantage early. Minnesota State would score one in the top of the fifth but couldn't produce any more, with the Warriors ending the doubleheader with a sweep, 10-2.

Lythberg scattered six hits while giving up one earned run in game two, striking out five Maverick batters. The sophomore is now 15-2 overall on the season in the circle.

Lintz got things off to a good start for the Warriors, hitting a three-run home run in the bottom of the first that scored Brooke Piotrowski and Jenny Nelson.

Kullmann posted her second homer of the day in the second inning, a solo shot that moved the WSU lead to 4-0. The Warriors would load the bases later in the frame thanks to consecutive singles by Piotrowski, Reed Karsten and Walker, getting one more run when Lintz was hit by a pitch.

A solo home run in the third got the Mavericks on the board but WSU got the run back, scoring five times in the bottom of the frame to move the lead to 10-1. Karsten had a RBI groundout while Walker plated two more with a single. Nelson finished the day's scoring for Winona State with a two-run single of her own.

Minnesota State was able to score once more in the top of the fifth, but Lythberg shut the door on the MSU rally.

Piotrowski had hits in all three of her at bats in game two, with Karsten, Walker and Kullmann also collecting a pair of hits. The Warriors pounded out 12 hits in the game while Lintz led the way with a team-high four RBI.

Winona State will return to action with games at Sioux Falls Friday and Southwest Minnesota State Saturday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 12 pm starts.
