WINONA, Minn. –
Morgan Lintz lifted the No. 25 Winona State softball team to a sweep of Wayne State in style, smoking a walk-off single in game two as the Warriors recorded 5-1 and 3-2 victories Tuesday in Winona.
The Warriors moved their win streak to 16 with the sweep, just one game short of the school record set in 2002. The victories also move WSU to 36-6 overall on the season and 19-3 in NSIC play.
Wayne State scored in the top of the first in game one but the Warriors responded right away, getting a
Jenny Nelson single in the bottom half of the frame to score
Brooke Piotrowski who had reached on an error.
Lintz broke the 1-1 tie in the third, producing a two-run single that plated
Reed Karsten and
Ashley Walker. The Warriors got on the board a final time in the fifth, scoring twice to move their lead to 5-1.
Mary Turitto pushed the first run across the plate with a single and
Allyson O'Herron followed with a run-scoring hit of her own.
Nelson went 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate in the opener. She also reached base in her first three plate appearances of game two, pushing her streak of reaching base safely to 20 consecutive at bats. The streak, which began in game one of the team's doubleheader at Sioux Falls on April 18, was finally broken in the seventh inning of game two Tuesday when the senior struck out. Lintz also had a pair of hits in the opener while driving in a team-high two.
Walker continued her run of strong pitching, throwing a complete game while allowing six hits and a single earned run. The junior struck out three while moving her record to 13-4 on the season.
Wayne State was able to take a lead in the third inning of game two, scoring on a RBI groundout and Warrior error. WSU responded right away, posting two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. A single, double and intentional walk loaded the bases for the Warriors with Turitto plating the first run with a RBI single. O'Herron followed by earning a walk that scored Nelson to tie the proceedings at two.
The score would remain tied at two until the bottom of the ninth when the Warriors were able to send the winning run home. Walker reached on a throwing error and advanced to second to lead off the inning and Nelson was intentionally walked to put a pair of runners on base. Lintz was able to come through with her game-winner, a single to left field that scored Walker.
Karsten had three of WSU's nine hits in game two, with Lintz adding two hits of her own. The Warrior first baseman ended the day with hits in four of her seven at bats while driving home three.
Hanna Lythberg was outstanding in the circle once again, giving up just three hits in her nine innings of work while striking out four. Lythberg pushed her record to 18-2 on the year, allowing just one earned run in the process.
Winona State will return to action on Thursday when the team travels to Upper Iowa for a 2 pm doubleheader.
