UMD went 2-4 last week, extending a seven-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep of Upper Iowa before dropping a series with Northern State over the weekend.
Sophomore third baseman Jimmy Heck continued his recent tear, hitting .471/.526/.701 with a pair of doubles, a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs. Junior utility man John Meyer found himself in the starting lineup for four games and hit .389/.421/.500 with two doubles and three RBI. Sophomore lefty Bo Hellquist tossed five shutout innings in a win over Upper Iowa to move to 3-4 on the season and lower his ERA to 3.27. Bulldog pitching was slugged around by Northern State to the tune of a 9.30 ERA. Minnesota State
Third-ranked Minnesota State (36-7, 24-4 NSIC) stretched its winning streak to a season-high 13 games as it swept rival St. Cloud State by margins of 3-1 and 12-2 last Wednesday at the MSU Baseball Complex. The Mavericks scored three runs in the sixth inning of game one behind four consecutive hits, including a double and two triples, from the heart of the MSU lineup to claim the contest, 3-1. Senior Jason Hoppe twirled his fifth complete game of the season to improve to 9-1 by striking out five and allowing an unearned run. Game two saw MSU scored four times over the first three innings as junior Nolan Johnson drilled a RBI triple in the first and a two-run home run, his fifth of the year, to lead the way. MSU added eight additional runs over the final three frames to walk away with a 12-2 victory in eight innings as senior Bryce Bellin scattered one earned run with a pair of strikeouts over seven innings to move to 3-1 on the year. Minnesota State can secure its fourth NSIC regular-season championship in the last five years this weekend. Moughtin’s biggest hit of the week was a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings in a 9-8 win over Augustana midweek. He finished with 11 runs batted in and scored seven runs for the Beavers.
Minot State used a four-game sweep of rival University of Mary to win five of the Beavers six games last week. The Beavers rallied for an extra-inning win over Augustana College to start the week off and then took four straight over the Marauders on the road. #19 Connor Moughtin (C, 5-11 195, R/R, Sr., Victoria, British Columbia / Lambrick Park Secondary) was a big part of that surge as he finished the week with three home runs, five extra base hits and 11 RBIs for MISU. Minot State has been getting big contributions from up and down their lineup as No. 9 hitter #10 Sean Arbaut (INF, 5-11, 170, S/R, Sr., Tehachapi, Calif. / Tehachapi / Taft College) had an outstanding week, batting 11-for-20 (.550) in six games, with eight RBIs. MISU got wins from five different pitchers as well. Leading the way with complete-game wins were #7 Austin Zorn (P/INF, 5-8, 150, R/R, Jr., Bismarck, N.D. / Bismarck) and #22 Brock McCashland (P, 6-2, 175, L/L, Jr., Ogden, Utah / Roy / Williston State) as Zorn topped U-Mary in game 1 and McCashland bookended the series with nine strong innings in game 4. MISU is scheduled to play host to Minnesota Crookston Wednesday and ends the regular season at Bemidji State Friday and Saturday.
Northern State
Matt Stubbs (Jr., 3B, Rochester, Minn.) peppered the ball over Northern’s 6-0 week as he hit .429 (9-for-21) and scored six runs against Winona State and Minnesota Duluth. Of Stubbs’ nine hits, six of them were for extra bases. Stubbs had one home run and five doubles during the week and also had a team-high 10 RBI’s while drawing four walks.
Colton Boucher (So., P, Chehalis, Wash.) made two appearances during the week for the Wolves, picking up a complete game win and a save for NSU. Boucher was magnificent in his win over WSU as he recorded his sixth complete game of the year and won his fifth consecutive start to move to 6-2 on the season. Boucher scattered seven hits over the seven innings of work and also struck-out seven Warriors. Against UMD, Boucher pitched the last two innings of the game to pick up his second save of the season and preserve the Northern sweep.
Sioux Falls
The University of Sioux Falls baseball team went 2-4 over the course of last week to enter the final week of the season at 17-28 overall (11-21, NSIC). On Tuesday, the Cougars used a pair of complete game performances from pitchers Henry Ojeda and Derek Fischer to earn a midweek sweep of the visiting University of Mary Marauders and snap a four-game NSIC losing streak. Senior Noah Coleman had three hits and four RBI to pace the Cougars, while Trevor Crow finished with three hits, one run batted in and drew a pair of walks. Henry Ojeda struck out three in seven solid innings to help USF take down the Marauders 4-1 in the front end of the double-header and senior ace Derek Fischer picked up right where Ojeda left off in game two, as the Cougars held on to defeat U-Mary 5-3 to complete the midweek sweep. Continuing its tough conference slate, USF traveled to Winona State for a four-game weekend series in hopes of making a statement against a consensus NSIC tournament team. However, the Cougars dropped both games of a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday as the Warriors secured a four-game series sweep at Loughery Field. On Friday, USF was lost a pair of one-run games to the Warriors, 7-6 and 4-3. Of USF’s 21 conference setbacks, 12 have been by three runs or less and six have been by one run. On Saturday’s the Cougar bats struggled against Winona State’s solid pitching staff, which allowed just three combined runs in Saturday’s double-header, as USF was swept—falling 8-1 in game one and 6-2 in the nightcap on Saturday. Sophomore outfielder Noah Durkin went 3-for-7 to account for twenty-five percent of the Cougars’ 12 combined hits on Saturday and is now hitting .367 on the season. Anthony Lopez finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Even improved outings by the Cougar pitching staff, which had a 1.29 ERA on Saturday, could not make up for the team’s other miscues, as eight errors spoiled USF’s best opportunity to salvage a win and led to the Warriors pushing some key runs across the plate. USF is scheduled to play South Dakota State University on Wednesday afternoon. The non-conference (nine-inning) contest will begin at 4 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Cougars will close out the 2014 season at home this weekend, when they host Concordia-St. Paul for a four-game series.

The pitching staff posted an ERA of 4.25 allowing just 25 runs in 53 innings of work including three complete games by Mason Buster, Dickson Paz and Martin Valdez. The Golden Bears swept UIU on Friday and Saturday in a four-pack of tight games, 2-1 (8), 3-2, 2-1 and 3-2.
