SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana baseball split a doubleheader with No. 3 Minnesota State on Saturday at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field. The Vikings took game one 5-3 against the Mavericks, before dropping game two 3-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Augustana's record now sits at 19-9 (9-2 NSIC) on the year. Minnesota State went to 22-5 (10-2 NSIC) on the season after Saturday's games.

The Vikings' game one win snapped a six-game losing streak against the Mavericks that dated back to 2012.

Game One

Kye Winter (4-0) shook off a rough first inning to record his fourth win on the year, and handed preseason All-American selection Jason Hoppe his first loss in his last 14 starts. Winter recorded his third-straight complete game for Augustana, going the full seven innings and giving up three runs on five hits while striking out seven batters.

Tony Viger provided the Vikings with some offense. Viger went 1 for 3 while recording his fourth homerun on the year. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also finished with two RBI in the win.

Alex Fink had a good outing, going 2 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Jake Petersen finished the game 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Winter struggled in the first, allowing for Minnesota State to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nolan Johnson capped off the quick start for the Mavericks, scoring on a Winter wild pitch for the third run of the inning.

Vikings got in the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second on a Petersen triple to right center that scored Fink from first base to make 3-1.

Augustana tied the game up at three in the bottom of the third inning. Fink's two-out single to right field scored Jacob James from second base to notch everything up.

Winter really got dialed into his game in the top of the fourth, beginning his streak of retiring the final 10 Minnesota State batters of the contest.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Vikings made its move in what turned out to be Viger's game-winning two-run blast over the right field wall that scored both Zach Dibble and himself, making it 5-3 in favor of Augustana.

Minnesota State never got a chance to answer as Winter retired the side in order in the both the sixth and seventh innings to give the Vikings the win.

Game Two

Augustana dropped in close one in late innings, losing 3-2 to the Mavericks to make it 1-1 in the four-game series.

Derek Quame (1-1) was credited for the loss after giving up a solo homerun to Max Waletich in the top of the ninth inning. It was the only hit Quame gave up in his 2.2 innings of work.

Michael Letkewicz gave the Vikings a quality start, pitching six innings while giving up just one earned run on four hits. Letkewicz also recorded seven strikeouts in the game.

Petersen continued his great play from game one at the plate in game two, going 2 for 2 with one RBI and one run scored. Petersen also picked up his third homerun on the year with a solo shot to right center in the bottom of the fifth.

Marcus O'Neill chipped in with a 1 for 3 performance at the plate.

Winter, while on going 1 for 4 at the plate, put on a dazzling display of fielding in right field. The senior made several highlight reel catches in the game.

Minnesota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning after a throwing error by Letkewicz allowed for Taylor Branstand to score from first base.

The Vikings were able to take a 2-1 in the bottom half of the fifth thanks to Petersen's homer to leadoff the inning. Brian Duxbury immediately followed that up with a single to left center, then was advanced to second on a sac bunt. Duxbury then stole third and was driven in by O'Neill's single to second base.

The Mavericks got the late-game heroics in the top of the ninth inning when Waletich hit a first-pitch bomb over the right field wall to give Minnesota State a 3-2 lead.

Augustana couldn't respond in the bottom of the ninth, getting a 1-2-3 inning to give the Mavericks the 3-2 win.
