Allendale, Mich. – The NSIC saw Chris Reed of Minnesota State win his second consecutive NCAA DII National Championship in the shot put, while ten other athletes took home All-American honors on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The NSIC totaled 16 individual All-Americans for the weekend and one relay team earned the honor.
The Minnesota State men’s track and field team totaled 28 points and finished in eighth place as Reed was able to defend his title on his final throw of his collegiate career, heaving the shot 65’ 4 ¾” earning 10 team points for the Mavericks. He added another All-American to his resume, his third of the weekend, and finishes his career with 11 All-American honors including both indoors and outdoors which is the most for any individual in school history. On the weekend he tallied 19 points for the Purple and Gold.
MSU freshman Myles Hunter ran a career-best time of 13.96 in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles en route to a second place finish earning eight points for MSU. This marks his first All-American of his collegiate career.
In the finals of the 200-meter dash MSU senior Jerrell Hancock was able to collect his 10th All-American honor of his career ranking him second in school history behind Reed. He ran a time of 21.36 to finish in eighth place earning one team point. The eight place finish ties the 1981 team with the highest finish in school history and the 28 points is the most points the Mavericks have ever scored as a team at the NCAA Championships.
Wayne State College junior thrower Sara Wells earned All-American honors Saturday night with a second place finish in the shot put. It’s the second outdoor All-American honor for Wells, who was fifth in the discus last season, and it marks her third All-American shot put honor after placing sixth in the event the last two indoor seasons. Wells, from Albion, recorded her top throw of 49’ 9 3/4” during the finals on her second throw. National champion Jamie Sindelar of Ashland (Mich.) had a throw of 54’ 0”, also on her second throw in finals, to win the event. Wayne State finished in 18th place at the national meet with 14 points and two All-Americans - Fehringer was third in the hammer throw Thursday and Sara Wells second in the shot put Saturday evening.
Minnesota Duluth’s Samantha Rivard placed second in the 5,000-meter run Saturday night at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Mich., and, in the process, secured All-American honors for the fourth time this season (twice in indoor track and once each in both cross country and outdoor track). She crossed the finish line in 16:35.44 -- a little under six seconds behind champion Alicia Nelson of Adams State University (16:29.60) in a race that went somewhat according to script as Nelson and Rivard came into the meet ranked 1-2 in qualifying times. Rivard’s best of 16.29.73 came at the Drake Relays back in April. Two nights ago, Rivard, a native of Oak Grove, Minn. who accounted for all eight of UMD’s team points on the weekend, finished 10th in the 10,000-meter run at the Grand Valley State University Track and Field Complex.
The University of Sioux Falls’ Jagger Gran and Scott Greenman each claimed the second All-American honors of their career when they tied for 6th place with their vaults of 16-8.75 (5.10m). Gran’s previous All-American nod came in the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships while Greenman’s came earlier this season at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Gran’s mark was also a personal best and the second highest vault in USF history while Greenman’s vault was just 2.75 inches shy of his school record and career best vault of 16-11.5 which came at the Howard Wood Relays earlier this season. Jeff Piepenbrink of Pittsburg State claimed the top honors in the Pole Vault as he cleared the bar at 17-4.5 (5.30m).
MSU Moorhead’s Molly Montonye finished fourth in the 1,500 meters while Tia Knight was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles to give the Dragon women seven team points in the competition. Montonye finished with a personal-best time of 4:26.87 and was just .17 seconds out of third. It is the first All-American honor of her collegiate career. Knight earned All-American honors in the 100-meter hurdles, running a school record time of 13.84, which was also a personal best, to finish seventh. Knight had set the school record of 13.99 at the NSIC Championships earlier this month and ran a solid 14.07 in Friday’s preliminaries. She shattered that time with her 13.84 on Saturday. Knight far surpassed her seed, which was 18th heading into Friday’s preliminary race.
Augustana’a Aduo Omot took eighth place in the men’s 800m run with a time of 1:50.26. Omot earned his second All-American honor as he was national champion in the 800m in 2011.
The University of Mary's Janet Johnson capped off her spectacular University of Mary career earning All-American honors for the first time. The senior from Kingston, Jamaica, ran the opening leg for the Marauders 4x100 meter relay team that claimed fourth in the nation. Johnson teamed with Brittany Osborne, Cassandra Jones and Kathryn Stewart to post a season-best time of 45.86 seconds in the 400 meter relay.
