Minnesota State University, Mankato Selected as Preseason Favorite in NSIC Soccer Coaches’ Poll
BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato was picked by the league’s coaches to win the NSIC in the preseason poll. Since 2008 Minnesota State has been picked to win the league three times, including two of the last three years.
The Mavericks received seven first place votes and tallied 214 points, ranking them just ahead of Minnesota Duluth (206), which received six first place votes. Winona State also received two first place votes as they ranked third with 204 points. SMSU was fourth with 185 points and one first place vote.
The 2014 NSIC Soccer Regular Season Champion will be determined by a 15-game league schedule, with a win earning a team three points and a tie one point.
The
2014 NSIC Soccer season will see its first action on Friday, September 5 as non-conference play begins.

NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year

Stormont was selected by the league coaches as the 2014 NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Stormont was an All-NSIC First Team selection last season along with being an NSCAA All-Central Region First Team and Daktronics All-Region Second Team selection. Stormont led the NSIC in scoring with a program-high 43 points and 18 goals. She ranks fourth all-time in points (93) and third in goals (39) at Minnesota Duluth. Last season she scored six postseason goals, including both in UMD’s 2-0 NCAA II Tournament win over Southwest Minnesota State. She earned at least one point in all but seven games and was named NSCAA Scholar All-American, Capital One Academic All-Central Region, and to NSIC All-Academic Team.

Steele was voted by the league coaches as the 2014 NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after starting all 20 matches and totaled 1,817 minutes played last season. Steele scored the game-tying goal vs. Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC Tournament Championship game on her way to MVP honors. She also played a critical role for a Maverick defense that posted 11 shutouts on the season. Steele earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 9 after leading a Maverick back line that posted back-to-back shutouts. She also garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District, Second Team All-NSIC, NSIC All-Tournament Team, NSIC Tournament MVP, NSCAA First Team All-Region, Daktronics Second Team All-Region and Academic All-NSIC honors.
