The St. Cloud State University baseball team (54-4) scored a thrilling 5-4 victory in 10-innings over rival Minnesota State University (43-9) on Saturday, May 16 in action at the 2015 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament being played at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The victory improves SCSU's tournament record to 3-1 and moves the Huskies into the championship game of the Central Region tournament against Henderson State University.
The Huskies and Reddies will match up for top region honors with a Noon game on Sunday, May 17 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MInn. This marks the fourth time since 2010 that the Huskies have advanced to the championship game of the region tournament. The winner of the NCAA Central Region tournament will advance to the 2015 NCAA Division II baseball championships in Cary, N.C. on May 23-30.
In an epic battle between two top NSIC rivals, SCSU came out on top with a run in the 10th inning that was scored by senior catcher Mike Jurgella on an RBI sac fly to center field by junior rightfielder
Karl Sorensen. The run made the final score 5-4 as
Reese Gregory, who had entered the game in the eighth inning in relief, retired the final three MSU batters of the game for the Huskies.
Gregory was the pitcher of record and now has a 13-0 record, which is a new team record for wins in a season.
Ryan Diers started the game for the Huskies and went 4.1 innings with six strikeouts and five hits allowed before
Kevin Bolder added 3.0 innings of mid-relief work to set the table for Gregory. On the day, SCSU outhit the Mavericks 9-8 in the game.
In the second inning, SCSU posted two runs to gain a 2-0 lead in the game as
Beau Fandel singled and then came home on an RBI single by Gregory.
Zak Hoffman then went on to score on an RBI sac fly by
Kyle Lieser to make the score 2-0. In the fourth inning, Gregory scored a run on a Mankato throwing error to make it 3-0.
MSU charged back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added one more run in the fifth to make it 3-3. Lieser helped SCSU regain the lead in the sixth inning with a homer to left field that made the score 4-3. This was Lieser's third homer of the season.
The Mavericks came back with one run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game before the Huskies chalked up the win in the top of the 10th with the game winning run by Jurgella.
Lieser and Fandel both had two hits in the game, while Lieser had two RBIs to pace SCSU.
Brandon Arnold, Jurgella,
Zach Hoffmann, Hoffman and Gregory all had one hit for SCSU in the game.
