NSIC Baseball Players of the Week
NSIC Player of the Week
#15 Jordan Joseph (IF, 5-8, 185, Sr., St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS)
St. Cloud State
- Batted .619 to lead the Huskies to a 3-1 record last week
- Had 13 hits in 21 at-bats, which included four doubles, one triple, 19 total bases, three runs and a .905 slugging rate
- Had eight putouts and 10 assists on defense with no errors
- He had three hits and one RBI in SCSU’s 6-0 win over BSU on April 16
- He also had three hits, two RBIs and a double in SCSU’s 4-2 win over BSU on April 16
- Continued the three-hit trend with three hits in SCSU’s 9-0 win at UMC on April 20, which also included three RBI
- Capped the week with a three-hit effort in SCSU’s 12-2 win at UMC on April 20
- He also had a triple and two RBIs in the game
- On the season, Joseph is now hitting .366 with 52 hits, 36 RBIs, 13 doubles and 28 runs scored

- Went 2-0 last week in starts against CSP and USF
- Threw 13 innings and allowed no runs on just eight hits
- Struck out 14 batters and held opponents to a .170 batting average
- Dropped his ERA from 3.03 to 2.26 for the season 
- In seven NSIC starts, is 3-4 with an ERA of 1.85 in 43.2 innings with 54 strikeouts and opponents have hit .185

The team knocked five home runs and also stole 21 bases

- Max Steffens pitched his fifth complete game of the season, this time against Winona State and gave up two earned runs and only two hits - Nate Crossman batted .526 over the past week, knocking in five RBI with four extra-base hits. The senior also stole three bases and scored seven runs - Riley Johnson and Will Olson each homered twice during the past week and combined to drive in 13 runs. The duo also swiped six bases during the past week

- Bemidji State went 1-4 over its past week of action after being swept by St. Cloud State and taking one of three against Northern State - The Beavers came back from a 5-3 deficit and scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning for the game-winning runs in game one against NSU - On the week, BSU hit .267 from the plate, fielded .975, and hit four home runs compared to just three given up - BSU’s relief pitchers combined for 21.2 innings pitched with just six earned runs allowed on 22 hits with 15 strikeouts

- Junior Kade Nelson totaled eight hits to lead BSU with a .421 batting average and a .450 on-base percentage - Sophomore Parker Borg totaled six hits with two doubles and one RBI in the DH spot - Junior Isaiah Grancorvitz recorded six hits, three for extra-base knocks including two home runs, with five RBI - Junior Noah Boser went 2-for-3 with two home runs in BSU’s win over NSU - Freshman pitcher Zack Henderson threw 4.1 innings in relief with three strikeouts - Sophomore pitcher Kenny Morris threw 5.2 innings in relief with no runs allowed and two strikeouts

- Josh Gaworski was impressive in a no-decision as he scattered six hits and allowed just an unearned run with four strikeouts in game two - Ray Wellner gave CSP some crucial innings out of the bullpen in game one as he worked 3.1 shutout innings and struck out five while allowing just two hits and two walks

Both games will be broadcast statewide on BEK Sports. - UMary wraps up its scheduled home games with a trio of conference games against Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28 - 13 seniors will make their final home appearance this weekend: Darius Barlas, Charles Bielejeski, Alec DeMaria, Connor Doll, Ian Fisher, Colin Gudereit, Travis Holte, Nick McCann, Jesus Payan, Daulton Sauce, Chris Scott, Travis Stevens and Dylan Thomas. Barlas, Bielejeski, DeMaria, Doll, McCann, Sauce, Scott and Stevens all played four seasons for the Marauder. - The Marauders 12 overall wins and eight conference wins are tied for the program high since winning 15 games overall in 2014 and posting 12 conference wins in 2010

- Turning in a second straight strong midweek performance, freshman RHP Daniel Turner held Minot State to two runs, three hits and a walk while striking out four in six innings of work - Jaxon Ford has hit in eight straight games, including five multi-hit games. Last week he was 10-for-26 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He is now hitting .281/.359/.345 on the season in the leadoff slot - Darius Barlas hit in five of six games last week, finishing 7-of-20 with four runs scored and three RBIs with three doubles and a home run. His nine homers ties Andy Leer and Tyler Liffrig’s 2010 total for the most by a UMary player since Liffrig hit 11 in 2009. For the year he is hitting .317/.393/.593 - Jesus Payan is on a tear, posting hits in 10 of his last 11 games. In six games last week he was 7-of-20 with three runs scored, six RBIs, two doubles and a home run. He is now hitting .352/.427/.536 - Andrew Brooks limited UMD to three runs in six innings striking out six in a 3-0 loss - Alec DeMaria posted 3.2 scoreless innings of relief covering two appearances during the week, striking out five, and allowing just one hit and three walks

- Reed Hjelle reached base all four times in Friday’s win over the Huskies, including the go-ahead homerun that put the Golden Eagles up 5-3 - Hjelle is second in the conference in homeruns with 10 - Jonathan Lund picked a good time for his first homerun of the season - Lund pinch-hit in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday against SMSU and hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1, which would be the final score - Dalton Grose had to work for his league leading ninth save on Friday, but got the job done by getting the final six outs of the games to close out the upset of the Huskies - Blaine, Minn., native Zach Rustad was outstanding in his only start of the week. In Friday’s win over the Huskies, Rustad went 7.0 innings, while giving up just three runs on five hits, while striking out five hitters. Rustad earned the win for his fifth of the season

- UMD closed out a six-game homestand by reeling off four straight victories - The Bulldogs exploded for 22 runs (their most in eight years) and 27 hits (their most since the 2012 season) in the series opener against the Marauders on Friday - UMD batted .374 in its six games last week. After hitting at a .227 clip during their opening 20 outings of the year, the Bulldogs are batting .324 in the 17 games since - The Bulldogs have been outscored 49-17 in the first inning this year, but have bounced back to outscore the opposition 39-19 in the second inning

- Sophomore outfielder Henry George and junior catcher Reid Rubio hit their first collegiate home runs in the Bulldogs 12-4 takedown of Mary on Saturday - George boosted his team-leading batting average to .403 after going 11-19 (.579)  in the weekend series with Mary. He also posted an .895 slugging percentage and a .667 on base percentage - Junior right fielder Drew Stewart was 5-for-6 and drove in five runs in UMD’s 22-3 victory over the Marauders on Friday - In that same game junior lefthander Rece Dietrich had another strong outing, surrendering just two earned runs and six hits in six innings of work. Dietrich paces the 2019 Bulldogs in starts (seven), innings pitch (37.0) and earned run average (2.68)

- Senior outfielder Jordan Hart hit .308 in the series with a double, a triple, six runs scored, four RBI and a walk - Junior infielder Teddy Petersen led the way with a .500 batting average with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jimmy Larson went six innings in his start, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts - Junior right-hander Jon Ludwig (4-0) picked up his second win in as many weeks coming out of the pen after going four scoreless innings and allowing one hit and having six strikeouts

- Minot State swept UMary on the road in Bismarck, N.D. in a Tuesday doubleheader - The Beavers plated a six-run ninth inning rally to overcome a three-run deficit and clinch the doubleheader sweep over the Marauders - Minot State survived a wild 15-12 slugfest vs. SMSU to tally the perfect 5-0 week - The Beavers are outscoring opponents by a blistering 36-6 margin in the second inning this season - In the five games, Minot State hit .275 as a team with 47 runs, 44 hits, five doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 40 RBI - The Beaver pitching staff totaled a 4.17 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 41 innings of work

- USF finished the week with a 1-4 record and the win was a 7-1 decision over Upper Iowa - USF pitching staff had a 4.35 earned run average in the past week with 21 earned runs allowed in 39.1 innings. USF had 25 strikeouts and walked just 12 during the five games - USF lowered its overall earned run average to 5.97 after a solid week on the hill. On the season USF has 273 strikeouts and 111 walks or a solid 2.5:1 ratio

- Over the past week, Christian Lazar made three appearances and threw six innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three hitters. Teams hit .053 against him - Keenahn Coyle, who has a league-high 10 pickoffs, lost a 1-0 decision at Upper Iowa when he threw six innings and allowing one run on six hits while tying a career high with eight strikeouts - In the past five games, freshman Trey Hubers hit a team-high .333 with four hits, two runs, RBI, .438 OBP and .417 slugging mark - Over the last 14 games, Christian Lazar has a 3-1 record with seven appearances. He has worked 15.1 innings, allowed eight hits and  four runs – all unearned – as he had  0.0 earned run average with 16 strikeouts - In that span Brandon Roesler had three appearances and an 0-1 record but a 0.00 era as he allowed eight hits and three unearned runs in 10 innings with seven strikeouts - Josh Rehwaldt has hit .321 over the last 15 games with three home runs and 12 RBI with a .419 OBP and .585 slugging mark

- Junior Brady Lanoue hit the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to defeat UMC last Tuesday - Senior Jayden Fleck batted .389 last week with three doubles and five RBIs. He leads the team this season batting .305 with five home runs and seven doubles - Sophomore Jake Hendricks belted a pinch-hit 3-run homer at UMC last week. It was SMSU’s first pinch-hit home run since the 2004 season - Senior left-handed pitcher Cole Petersen tossed a team-high 10 2/3 innings last week, allowing just three runs on eight hits

- The Huskies went 3-1 on the week with a sweep over BSU on April 16 and two wins at UMC on April 20.  Of note, the April 16 twinbill against Bemidji State was played at Saint John’s University in Collegeville due to field conditions in Bemidji, Minn. - In last week’s NCBWA Division II national poll, SCSU was ranked #5 and the Huskies also received a #1 ranking in this week’s NCBWA Central Region poll released on April 16 - SCSU owns a .324 team batting average this season, which includes 417 hits and 304 runs scored in 38 games played.  SCSU has outscored its opponents 304-119 this season - Mitch Mallek leads SCSU with a .401 batting average this year, which includes 57 hits and nine home runs - On the mound, Dominic Austing is 5-0 and Sheldon Miks is 7-1.  Austing needs seven more strikeouts to break the SCSU career strikeout record.  He currently has 60 strikeouts this season and Miks leads SCSU with 63

- Jordan Joseph batted .619 this week with 13 hits and eight RBI - Matt Quade and Najee Gaskins both had seven hits apiece for the Huskies in the games last week - Dom Austing tossed a five-hit shutout in SCSU’s 6-0 victory over BSU on April 16.  He had eight Ks in the game - Matt Osterberg pitched a four-hit shutout against BSU on April 16.  He had six strikeouts in the game.

- Duncan Snider led the UIU pitchers with a 2-0 record in 2 starts on Tuesday and Friday throwing 13 innings and allowing 0 runs on just 8 hits; the junior also struck out 14 batters - Blake Thiesse also started twice and after a no-decision against CSP, Thiese earned a win in the series finale with USF; the freshman threw 13.2 innings allowing 4 runs, just 1 earned, on 6 hits with 8 strikeouts - At the plate, A.J. Friedrich led Upper Iowa with a .450 average thanks to 9 hits including a double and a triple; Friedrich drove in a team-high 6 and scored 3 times
