SCSU baseball advances in NSIC tourney with win over Minnesota State

St. Cloud, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University baseball team won its second consecutive game in NSIC tournament play on Friday, May 9 with a convincing 12-4 victory over Minnesota State University at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Huskies turned in another strong offensive showing as they outhit the Mavericks 15-10 in the contest, which moved SCSU's overall season record to 40-10.  This marked the seventh time in team history (and the seventh time since 2010) that the Huskies have won 40-plus games in a season.

SCSU opened the game's scoring with an RBI single by Mathew Meyer, which scored Lenny Walker in the first inning.  The Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 in the second inning with a solo homer to leftfield by Caeden Harris.

MSU battled back with one run apiece in the third and fourth inning to tie the contest at 2-2.  In the fifth inning, Meyer gained another RBI with a sac fly that scored Walker to make it 3-2.  MSU rallied in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to take a brief 4-3 lead.

In the seventh inning, SCSU turned on the power with a solo homer to right by Meyer.  Harris then singled to centerfield to scored Jordan Joseph to make it 5-4.  Walker capped the inning with a two RBI single that brought Aaron Hammann and Harris.

In the ninth inning, Walker posted a two RBI single that scored Ethan Ibarra and Hammann that made the score 9-4.  Meyer stayed on task with a single that scored Matt Butler followed by a two RBI double by Joseph that brought home Mitch Mallek and Walker.

Shannon Ahern was the pitcher of record with two innings of relief pitching.  Blake Flint opened the game for SCSU on the mound and went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and six hits allowed.  Matt Butler came in to finish the game and gain the save with 1.1 innings of work.

At the plate, both Meyer and Walker each had three hits along with four RBIs in the game.  Hammann also had three hits in the game, while two hit days were credited to Joseph, Harris and Mallek.

The Huskies will now advance to play Augustana in the winner's bracket of the NSIC tournament on Saturday, May 10 at Noon on Faber Field in St. Cloud.  Tickets for the game are available at the gate.  Fans can watch the game on the NSIC video portal and also listen on the KVSC Sports Stream.

In the other game on Saturday, May 10, Winona State and Minot State will play at Haugen Field on the campus of Saint John's University.  The winner of this game will face the loser of the game between SCSU and Augie immediately after at Faber Field in St. Cloud on May 10.  The tournament championships game will then be played on Sunday, May 11 at Faber Field.

The other teams elimated today included Minnesota Crookston, Northern State, Minnesota State and Wayne State.
