CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

The Concordia-St. Paul men’s track and field team is coming off a 2020 indoor season that saw them finish eighth at the NSIC Indoor Championship in Mankato with a total of 45 points. CSP was picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll with 61 points, just three less than the seventh place Sioux Falls Cougars. The track athlete to watch this season for the Golden Bears is distance runner Isaiah Winowiski. The sophomore recorded a PR in the 3000 at the 2019 NSIC Indoor Championships with a time of 9:14.14, landing him in 24th place. Winowiski was also a part of the 4x400 team that took ninth place at the NSIC Indoor Challenge (Feb 15) with a time of 3:40.42. The field athlete to watch for the Bears this season is Jakob Tordsen. The senior set a personal best in the heptathlon finishing seventh while scoring 4625 at the 2019 NSIC Track and Field Indoor Championship. Tordsen also recorded a personal best in the high jump with a jump of 1.89m while finishing in fifth place at the Ted Nelson Classic. This year’s team also includes 17 new freshmen.

I am impressed with how resilient this group of men has been since last spring and through a season of fall training with so much uncertainty. Their commitment to putting in the time and effort necessary to continue improving through the challenges that COVID-19 has brought is inspiring. It is exciting to know that this team will rely on both returners and newcomers to contribute to the overall success of the team.

Isaiah showed much promise as a true freshman last year on the track and we believe Isaiah is poised for a breakout this winter. He has some of the qualities and characteristics that we want to groom as a long-term leader on this team and has the type of personality that can rally a group of individuals to focus on a team effort in a sport that is often seen through the individual lens.
Head Coach Sam Johnson

Jakob Tordsen (Heptathlon, Jr., Wausau, Wis. / Wausau West HS) - Concordia University, St. Paul

He has set some goals and expects to place high in the conference heptathlon and contribute to additional team success where possible.

Leading the Marauders efforts on the track is Northern Sun champion Logan Myers. A senior from Gillette Wyo., Myers won the 200 meter dash at the 2020 NSIC indoor championships in an NCAA provisional-qualifying effort. The Marauders look for junior Brady Erickson to key the team’s efforts in field events. The Cody, Wyo., native was the runner-up in the long jump at the 2019 NSIC indoor championships. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s indoor track and field team is looking to improve upon the season it had a year ago. The Bulldogs finished seventh at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships last year. Highlighting that group are 12 top-8 finishers at the NSIC Championships from a year ago. Among those 12 are senior Christian Leonard, who is one of this year’s player to watch for UMD, and for good reason. Senior Ian O’Connor has also been pegged as another athlete to watch. O’Connor placed first last season in the Bulldogs debut at “The Opener” in the high jump (6’-04.75”). This was O’Connor’s second consecutive year winning the event. Both Leonard and O’Connor received All-NSIC Spring honors last season and Fall this season, with Leonard making both Fall and Winter teams as well. Both athletes as well received D2 ADA Academic achievement awards.

Since the track & field team hasn't had a meet since February of 2020, I am looking forward to watching them being able to compete again. The student-athletes are also very much looking forward to hopefully having the opportunity to compete during the indoor track & field season, as they miss competing against their opponents and striving to achieve their personal goals.

Upper Iowa’s men’s indoor track and field team is anxious to get onto the track this indoor season for year number two. Last year, the men scored two points in their first season back on campus at the 2020 NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships thanks to a seventh-place finish in the long jump. Jaylen Hobson, one of UIU’s NSIC Athletes to Watch, nearly scored points as well after an 11th place finish in the long jump. Kaden Ludwig, the second Peacock named as a NSIC Athlete to Watch, placed 16th at the 200-meter race and was part of the 4x400-meter relay that placed 10th at the NSIC Championships. In addition to Hobson and Ludwig, the Peacocks return quite a few with experience in the Northern Sun including Macklin Conrad, Grant Dieken, Iberius Jenkins, Collin Kime, Brady Krupa, Devon Lawrence, Andrew Paskey, David Snider, and Samuel Thomas. Head Coach Nate Rucker, who is entering his ninth season at UIU, continues to build the schedule in advance of the NSIC Championships scheduled for the end of February.

To see the continued growth and maturation of our young men's program, should make for a fun and memorable season.

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

The Wayne State College men’s indoor track and field team will look to an All-American and NSIC champion thrower and a group of 13 freshmen to improve on last year’s ninth place finish at the NSIC Indoor Championships.  Cade Kalkowski returns in the weight throw.  He was second in the event last year after taking first in 2019 and is a two-time NCAA national qualifier that includes an All-American finish (seventh) in 2019.  Another top returner in the throws (shot put) is senior Ben Allen, who made the finals in the event last season.  Junior long jumper Mikhail Sands is back for the Wildcats, scoring points at the NSIC Championships the last two seasons (7th – 2020, 4th – 2019).  Junior Noah Lilly returns in the multi-events and earned an eighth place finish last season in the heptathlon.  Senior hurdler/sprinter Preston Davis, middle distance runners Bryce Holcomb and Brock Hegarty and distance runner Bailey Peckham are veterans on the Wildcat roster that look to score points for WSC this season.

We have several key performers back this year that have scored in the NSIC and several other returners who we feel have the ability to make the jump into a scoring position this year. In addition, we have added several talented freshmen, who we feel can compete at the NSIC level as well. We are looking forward to getting to compete again after losing the outdoor season last year due to COVID cancellation.

Noah Lilly (Heptathlon, Jr., Creighton, Neb. / Creighton HS) -  Wayne State College

  • Placed 8th in 2020 NSIC Heptathlon
  • Took 12th in heptathlon as a freshman in 2019

Noah is progressing as an athlete and cracked into a scoring position as a sophomore last year with an 8th place finish. The heptathlon takes a lot of development and discipline to make improvements, and I feel like Noah has done that this fall. He has his sights set on making some big improvements and we are excited to see what he can do this year.

Cade Kalkowski  (Weight Throw, Sr., Niobrara, Neb. / Niobrara HS)  - Wayne State College

  • Two-time NCAA national qualifier in weight throw
  • 2019 NSIC Weight throw champion (2nd – 2020, 7th – 2017)
  • 2019 NCAA All-American in weight throw (7th – 66- 7.75)
Cade has been a consistent performer throughout his career, including being the NSIC Conference Champion in 2019 and an NCAA All-American that year as well. Last year, he improved his personal best and was runner-up in the NSIC and was on course to repeat his All-American performance before the NCAA Championships were cancelled in Birmingham last year. He is motivated to get back there and bring home some more All-American hardware.
