AUGUSTANA PICKED IN NSIC SOFTBALL PRESEASON POLL FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE SEASON

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - For the second consecutive season, Augustana University was chosen as the favorite in the NSIC Preseason Softball Coaches’ Poll. This marks the third time (2012 & 2020) that the Vikings have been selected by the coaches to win the league. The Vikings amassed 222 points and 12 first place votes. Winona State was second with 210 points and the other three first place votes. 

Minnesota State was third in the poll with 194 points while St. Cloud State was fourth with 180 points. The preseason coaches’ poll is based off each coach ranking each team from 15 to 1 with the top team receiving 15 points, second 14, third 13, etc.

The 2021 NSIC Softball season gets underway with non-conference play next month, while the 30-game NSIC schedule is set to begin on Tuesday, March 30.

The 2021 NSIC Softball Tournament will consist of the top ten teams in the NSIC final standings competing in a double elimination format on May 6-8 at the RYFSA Complex in Rochester, Minnesota.

#11 Alison Nowak (C/DP, Sr., L/L, New Berlin, Wis. / New Berlin Eisenhower HS) - Winona State University
  • In 2019,  hit .415 in 62 games, had 14 home runs, and drove in 61 RBI
  • Her slugging percentage was an eye-popping .729 in 2019
  • in 17 games last season she hit .510 with 12 RBI, 11 doubles and three home runs for a .902 slugging percentage

As an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholar and Winona State's Female Student/Athlete of the Year, Ali exemplifies all that is good about Division II. She has been able to be an elite level softball player while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning as many Academic Accolades as Athletic Honors. Ali's impact is felt every day in our program through her positive and contagious attitude, work ethic, and passion for softball and life outside the field of play.

#26 Ashley Mickschl (RHP, Sr., Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury HS) - Augustana University
  • Tallied a 1.45 ERA and 71 strikeouts over 72.1 innings in 2020
  • Tallied an 11-1 record in 13 appearances last season
  • Earned All-America honors as a sophomore in 2019
  • Named the NCAA National Championship Most Outstanding Player

  • Appeared in 43 games and tallied a 32-6 record with a 1.82 ERA
Ashley is the backbone of our team. She has had an amazing career and we are excited to see what this season holds for her. She is a multi-year All-American who is quiet, unassuming, incredibly humbly, and plays for her teammates. She is another example of what Augie Softball is all about. She will graduate with honors and leave Augie on a path to serving others. She will be using her Spanish Immersion background as she goes onto being an ELL teacher and live a life of service towards others.

Season Previews & Players to Watch

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY

Augustana enters the 2021 season as the still defending National Champions. The Vikings concluded the 2020 season ranked No. 4 in the nation after tallying a 16-3 record before the season came to a halt. Among those wins was a 1-0 win over then No. 10 Texas A&M-Commerce. The Vikings concluded the season, unknowingly, with seven-straight wins.

Augustana returns all but three players that saw action in the 19 games last season, including Abbie Lund who led the team with a .483 hitting percentage. She also tallied eight steals on eight attempts. Also returning is Kendall Cornick who hit .365 with three home runs and 18 runs scored while joining Lund as the team leader with eight steals. 

The Vikings also return the pitching duo of Ashley Mickschl and Amber Elliot. Mickschl, an All-America selection, ranked eighth in the nation in 2020 with 11 victories in the circle. She tallied a 1.45 ERA and struck out 71 hitters in 72.1 innings pitched. She walked just seven hitters. Elliot picked up five wins in the circle while striking out 53 hitters in 42.2 innings pitched. 

Augustana is slated to open the 2021 campaign at the Irwin Classic hosted by UT-Tyler and Texas A&M Commerce. Among the first slate of games are Commerce and UT-Tyler, both of which ended 2020 ranked inside the top-10 of the NFCA poll. 

I am excited about this year's team. They are an amazing group of women who work hard and uphold the traditions and culture of Augustana Softball. I love their coachability and how they take care of one another both on and off the field.

#20 Kendall Cornick (OF, Sr., L/R, Mason City, Iowa / Mason City HS) - Augustana University

  • Hit .365 over 19 games in 2020, tallying three home runs and 14 RBI
  • Led Augustana with eight stolen bases
  • Earned Second Team All-NSIC honors in 2019
  • Led Augustana with 31 stolen bases during 2019 season
  • Ranked second in the nation with 74 runs scored during National Championship campaign
  • Finished the season with 36 RBI and 109 total bases
We are thrilled that Kendall chose to return to Augustana for her extra year of eligibility. Kendall is the quintessential student-athlete. Besides being an outstanding athlete, she is a true scholar and most importantly a person of integrity. Throughout the pandemic, Kendall has worked on the frontlines in hospitals and nursing homes taking care of the most vulnerable. These experiences will serve her well as she heads to medical school next fall. Every good quality in life one can think of, Kendall possesses. She truly is the cream of the crop in athletics, in academics and most importantly life.

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY

The Bemidji State University softball team returns 12 letter-winners from a 2020 season that was shortened to just 22 games due to COVID-19. The Beavers posted a 10-12 record during the 2020 season and head coach Brittany Gomez-Olson has added seven newcomers to the team for the 2021 season. The Beavers return junior Elaina Christiansen to the team after she finished second on the team last season with a .375 batting average and led the team with 24 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Christiansen also was second on the team with five home runs and 16 RBI. The Beavers return eight positions in the field and only lost shortstop Olivia Tucker to graduation. In the circle, senior Stephi Dullum leads the BSU pitching staff after posting a 1.99 ERA last season in 13 appearances and a 4-3 record. 

This being my first full year as head coach I am overly excited to see how all the work we have put in in the off season on and off the field shows on game days. We have been able to do so much more work than just softball and I hope to see that realization in ours player's eyes of how the small things really add up to those big things. We have added a ton of new faces to our roster and I look forward to seeing how they do throughout our season along with all the returners that have been so hungry for a season.

#6 Lisa Kossan (IF, Sr., R/R, Motley, Minn. / Staples-Motley HS) - Bemidji State University

  • Returns for her senior season after her first season with the Beavers a year ago
  • Appeared in 18-of-22 games for the Beavers and finished third on the team with a .333 batting average with 17 hits in 51 at bats
  • Totaled seven RBI, one home run, and five doubles to finish third on the team with a .490 slugging percentage
  • Put together five multi-hit games during the season and two three-hit games
Lisa is a straight out ball player. She always works hard, asks for more, and gives 110% anytime we are on the field. She is a gritty, get-it-done type player and craves that competition to thrive in. She is a great leader both on and off the field and I am excited to see how she does in her last year here at BSU.

#20 Stephi Dullum (RHP, Sr., Harwood, N.D. / West Fargo HS) - Bemidji State University

  • Returns for her senior season after posting a 1.99 ERA in 13 appearances last season and posted a 4-3 record with 34 strikeouts
  • Has appeared in 70 career games for the Beavers and is tied for fourth in the program with 23 career wins
  • She is also sixth at BSU with a 3.19 career ERA and seventh with 199 career strikeouts
Stephi is a hard worker and always pushes herself to do and be better. You don't have to ask her to do what needs to be done, she always does it without asking. She is a good leader by her actions and always pushes for the best in herself and her teammates. I am excited to see how she does in her final year in green and white!

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

The Golden Bears are coming off of a shortened season in which they went 11-8. CSP open’s the 2021 campaign with last season’s squad still very much intact as the Golden Bears have 18 returners and four freshmen. This team is looking to build off of the success they had last season in which both their offense and pitching showed some promises. CSP hit .296 as a team which ranked 8th in the NSIC. They had 159 hits, 23 doubles, 14 home runs, 86 RBI’s and 97 runs scored. In the circle, CSP posted a 2.94 team ERA which ranked 5th in the NSIC. They held opponents to a .270 batting average while striking out 112 batters in 128.2 innings. The Golden Bears will look to last year’s top offensive performers to be productive in the lineup this coming season, like senior Kris McIntyre (.375 AVG), sophomore Hannah Mihalik (.339 AVG, 17 RBI), sophomore Grace Beseman (.310 AVG, 3 HR, 13 RBI) and sophomore Clara Heislen (.303 AVG, 10 SB). In the circle Concordia will return most of their pitching core from last season. Senior Aryka Knoche led the Golden Bears with an ERA of 2.60, two saves and 33 strikeouts. Senior Kali Kaestner was tied for the team leader in wins (4-2) and she led the team in innings pitched (41.2). Sophomore Bryana Olson will look to continue to grow in the circle as she went 4-0 last season with a 3.10 ERA in 25.1 innings pitched. 

Our team is excited to get going and get back into softball mode. I believe our pitching staff is our strength and will keep us in most every game. We have a veteran team with a lot of experience so with the shortened season I expect us to come out and play well early and continue to show improvement throughout the course of the season.

#2 Kris McIntyre (OF, Sr., L/L, Sunnyvale, Calif. / The King’s Academy) - Concordia University, St. Paul

  • Led the Golden Bears with a .375 batting average and led the team with 21 hits in 56 at bats in 2020
  • Hit two doubles and one home run while driving in nine runs for a .464 slugging percentage last season
  • Was second on Concordia with nine stolen bases and led the team with nine walks 
  • Was second on the Golden Bear squad with 13 runs scored while leading the team with a .463 on-base percentage during the 2020 season
  • Named to the NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence 
Kris comes back for her 5th year, 4th at CSP with plenty of NSIC game experience and ready to lead our offense. Her ability to get on base and use her speed makes her one of the top offensive weapons in the NSIC. We look for Kris to lead us offensively again this spring.

#23 Kali Kaestner (RHP, Sr., Mukwonago, Wis. / Mukwonago HS) - Concordia University, St. Paul 

  • Appeared in 11 games and started in six while going 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA and led the team with three complete games in the 2020 season
  • Struck out 26 batters in 41.2 innings, allowing only 17 runs on 46 hits while holding opponents to a .277 batting average last year
  • Currently holds a 26-13 career record in 78 appearances and 25 starts with CSP
  • Currently has the tenth lowest ERA in program history with a 2.91, with 15 complete games
  • She ranks fourth in program history with six career saves, has 176 strikeouts in 274.2 career innings, also holds the seventh lowest opponent batting average in program history at .258.

 

Kali returns to CSP for her final year of college softball with a wealth of experience in the circle. When the game is on the line Kali wants the ball and consistently thrives in those situations. She absolutely loves to compete and challenge herself and the opponents.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY

The University of Mary softball team is looking to reach new heights after last season was cut short due to COVID-19. Steph Roan enters her third season as the head coach of the Marauders softball program. The Marauders went 21-29 in her first season in charge and 12-9 last season before it was canceled. UMary returns several big bats from last year, such as senior catcher Madelynn Trout. In her first season as a Marauder, Trout slashed .380/.446/.740 while hitting four home runs and driving in 15 runs. 

Pitcher/third basemen Kaitlyn Alvarado, back for her third season at UMary, posted an ERA of 3.00 with a WHIP of 0.99 in 30.1 innings last season. Opponents had a batting average of only .188 against her. The senior also hit .303 last year while collecting 15 RBIs.  Senior catcher/outfielder Rachael Laetsch returns to the Marauders after having an on-base percentage of .435 and led the team with 10 walks. Last season Laetsch made no errors behind the plate and had 10 assists with 59 putouts. Senior first basemen Kasidy Chileen has been a starter since her freshmen year for UMary. She hit .320 and drove in 33 runs in 2019. Other returning starters include Mariah Sanchez, Haley Berube and Mikaela Pelesauma. To bolster the lineup, Roan brought in five new freshmen to the team. The freshmen include Brooke De Jonge, Levi Luna, Nichole Eckhardt, Alissa Alvarado and Mackenzie Reinhardt.  Other additions include junior outfielder Avery Dome who transferred from Phoenix Community College. Dome hit .455 in 51 games played while at Phoenix Community College. 

This season we have a veteran roster across the field. Several of these players have contributed to our success over the last couple seasons. We also have younger players that are showing alot of promise. I look forward to starting where we left off last season!

#12 Madelynn Trout (C/UT, Sr., R/R, North Bend, Wash. / Mount Si HS) - University of Mary 

  • In her first season with the Marauders, averaged a team-high .380 last year while driving in 15 runs in 17 games 
  • Hit four home runs
  • Led the team in OBP (.446) and OPS (1.186) and was second in slugging percentage (.740)
Last year, Maddy Trout transferred to our team after being apart of a very successful junior college program. Since her first day on campus, Trout has made her presence known by being a good role model for our underclassmen to follow. On the field, she has been a major contributor behind the plate as a catcher and with the bat. As a young professional, Maddy continues to work hard in the classroom and strives to have a successful career.

#24 Kaitlyn Alvarado (RHP, Sr.,  Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa HS) - University of Mary 

  • Pitched in 30.1 inning last season with an ERA of 3.00 and a record of 3-1
  • Opponents hit .188 off her as Alvarado posted a WHIP of 0.99
  • Also a starter on the infield, she hit .303 while driving in 15 RBIs
  • In her first season at UMary in 2019 she hit posted an OPS of .972 and hit 13 doubles
Kaitlyn has been a versatile threat both on the mound and at third base. She has also proven her worth in the box as a lefty power hitter. As an upperclassmen, she has provided leadership qualities and a competitive spirit to our roster. This season will be her senior year so i anticipate big things from her!

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

The Golden Eagles enter their third season under the helm of head coach Travis Owen. The Golden Eagles set a school record two seasons ago, winning 13 games in Coach Owen’s first season. Last year, the Golden Eagles looked well on their way to breaking that record, getting off to a 6-10 start before the season was cancelled.

This year, the Golden Eagles enter the season with higher expectations than ever. Offensively, the Golden Eagles return a number of key contributors, including Cassie Querry and Leah and Hannah Macias. Jordan Peterson and Gabriella Blomdahl also return and will look to make a big impact at the plate. Before the season shut down, the Golden Eagles scored 75 runs in 16 games.

In the circle, the Golden Eagles will look to replace Paige Pitlick, who was a contributor in all four seasons. Kamryn Frisk and Alina Avilos are back to try and prevent runs. A pitcher to watch this season is Katie Humehj. The native of British Columbia is a transfer from LIU-Post, where she went 26-7 as a junior, helping her team to the NCAA Division II College World Series appearance in 2019.

The Golden Eagles will kick off their season Feb. 10 against NSIC foe Bemidji State in non conference play.

What excites me about this year's team is the leadership we've had emerge throughout the adversity that has hit everybody in 2020. It hasn't been easy on anyone and I'm looking forward to seeing us stick together through the adversity that ultimately happens in any season too, once we get rolling with 2021. We will need to have different people step up in different roles and situations, and that is always unique with any team, so I am excited to see how this year's team will respond.

#17 Cassie Querry (C/3B, Sr., R/R, Cassville, Pa. / Lock Haven University) -  University of Minnesota Crookston

  • Started all 15 games a season ago
  • Led the Golden Eagles with four homeruns
  • Had a .729 slugging and 1.193 OPS
Cassie is one of the hardest workers on the team and that has shown in the weight room and on the field. She has a great arm from behind the plate and at third base, and offensively she is a power threat who gives herself a good chance to hit the ball hard every time she steps in the box.

#3 Katie Humhej (RHP, Sr., Surrey, British Columbia  / LIU-Post) -  University of Minnesota Crookston

  • Transfer from 2019 NCAA Division II College World Series Participant, Long Island-Post
  • Went 26-7 in 2019 in the circle. Pitched 214 innings with a 2.06 ERA and notched 115 strikeouts to just 31 walks
  • Was ECC Pitcher of the year in both 2018 and 2019
  • Member of the Czech Republic National Team in 2017
Katie has become one of the team leaders through her example of hard work both on and off the field. She has excellent focus on continual improvement and likes the challenge of competing against high-level hitters. Her presence in the circle will keep us competitive against any team we play this season.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team got 15 games under their belt in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season, going 7-8 in that timeframe with trips to Kansas and Florida to play some of Division II’s top teams. The 2021 Bulldogs return a talented core from last year’s team and add a deep freshman class. Six of eight position starters will return for the 2021 season, including the entire infield, catcher, and top two pitchers. Among the returners, the team will look to Lauren Oberle and Sam Pederson for a veteran presence. Oberle, a right-handed shortstop, returns as captain for her fifth season. She has started since her arrival on campus and anchored the infield for the past two seasons, collaring All-NSIC second team honors in 2019. That same year she turned in a .309 batting average and hit a career-high ten homers while generating a .566 slugging percentage. Right-handed junior pitcher Sam Pederson will be a leader of the pitching staff and has the potential for a breakout season. In her freshman season she started 28 games, generating a 15-9 record and a 3.06 earned run average while striking out 78 in 162.1 innings. Head Coach Jen Walter brings in a freshman class of eleven and will look to that group to add depth while also competing for immediate starting roles. The Bulldogs plan to open their season at the Emporia State Classic against Northwest Missouri State University on Friday, February 19th.

We have a great mix of experience and youth. We return six of the eight position starters, including our entire infield and catcher, along our top two pitchers from last year. We also have a large and talented group of freshmen that will compete for the remaining starting positions as well as give us tremendous depth at every position. Offensively, I believe we will have a balanced line up, able to produce both speed and power. I am excited to see what we can do, but mostly as a team we are excited to simply play!

  • 2019 - .321 avg, 33 RBI, 9 HR, .590 SLD%, .951 FLD%
  • 2021 Team Captain, 5th season
  • 2019 All-NSIC Second Team selection
Lauren returns for her 5th season and has been a starter since she arrived on campus. She has been our team leader both offensively and defensively and has anchored our infield at the shortstop position for the past two season. She is a steadying force for us and brings the maturity, drive and pure love of the game that is a positive influence the team.

#20 Sam Pederson (RHP, Jr., North Branch, Minn. / North Branch HS) - University of Minnesota Duluth 

  • 2020 – 2.78 ERA, 10 appearances, 1 SV, 50.1 IP
  • 2019 – 2.94 ERA, 25 appearances, 0 SV, 147.2 IP
  • Will lead the pitching staff in 2021
We look for Sam to be the leader of our pitching staff and take the next step in her development. She is great at controlling the bottom of the zone and producing ground balls, which we feel plays right into the strength of our defense. Sam has really worked hard during the past year to develop both consistent velocity and location and we believe she can be a top pitcher in this conference.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO

The Minnesota State softball team returns 10 letterwinners from last season’s team, including seven starters. The Mavericks owned a 17-3 record before the 2020 season was cancelled, including wins in their final 10 games. MSU will see the return of five players who batted at least .311 or better last season, including senior Carly Esselman who batted .474, senior Hannah McCarville who batted .422 and junior Torey Richards who batted .400. Esselman led the team in runs scored (23), hits (36) doubles (8) home runs (6) and RBI (24). McCarville also drove in 20 runs, while Richards scored 13 runs and stole eight bases. As a unit, the Mavericks batted .353 last season as they outscored their opponents 127-45. As a team, MSU also stole 43 bases and allowed just three by its opponents. In the circle, Maverick pitchers combined for a 1.88 ERA as they allowed just 36 earned runs, while holding their opponents to a .225 batting average. Junior Mackenzie Ward led the MSU pitching staff with a 7-2 record and a 0.99 ERA. Opponents batted just .149 against Ward last season as she fanned 88 batters. Freshman McKayla Armbruster posted a 4-0 record as she struck out 28 batters while maintaining a 2.03 ERA. Freshman Katie Bracken owned a 6-1 record and a 3.15 ERA last season as she struck out 30 batters. 

This spring it is just exciting to be back practicing and looking forward to having the opportunity to get back on the diamond and play games again. The love of the game that our SA’s possess shine on there faces even through the masks during practice right now so imagine what it will be like on game days. This is what DII Athletics is about…. not the wins and the losses but the daily interaction that we get to have with our student-athletes and each other. Savor the moments and celebrate the small successes in life…..You never know how important something is until you almost loss it.

#2 Carly Esselman  (OF,  Sr., L/L, Farmington, Minn. / Farmington HS) - Minnesota State University, Mankato

  • Played and started in all 20 games for the Mavericks, including primarily in left field
  • Led the team in several offensive categories including batting average (.474), runs scored (23), hits (36), doubles (8), home runs (6) and RBI (24)
  • Was named the NSIC Player of the Week twice
  • IN 2019, played in 34 games, while making 32 starts in right field; Batted .286 with 10 doubles and three home runs
I am so excited that Carly get to return and complete her senior season this year after having her season ended last spring after 20 games. Carly has been a four year starter for us since arriving on our campus and her freshman year was part of the National Championship team. Carly is a great role model and truly exemplifies what it means to be student-athlete at the DII. She possesses a tremendous work ethic on the field and in the classroom. She has a passion for softball, MSU and is a leader for us behind the scenes.

#17 Mackenzie Ward (RHP, Jr.,  Clive, Iowa / Valley HS) -  Minnesota State University, Mankato

  • Made 12 appearances in the circle for the Mavericks, including 10 starts
  • Led the pitching staff with a 0.99 ERA and 88 strikeouts
  • Recorded a 7-2 record and threw six complete games and three shutouts
  • In 2019, made 41 appearances, including 30 starts; Led the pitching staff with a 1.83 ERA and 254 strikeouts
  • Recorded a 20-12 record and threw 24 complete games and four shutouts
Mackenzie returns as the veteran of the staff and we are excited for her experience and leadership to help encourage the growth and development of our young pitching staff.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD

MSUM returns an experienced group for Head Coach Amanda Reckamp’s third season. Senior captain Emma Dummer returns at third base; she has started 146 games in her MSUM career. She hit .295 in 14 games a year ago. Junior catcher Jordie McNeilly was off to a strong start in 2020 before the pandemic shut down the season. She was hitting .390 with three homers and nine RBI. Junior outfielder Jordey Smith hit .343 a year ago. Another veteran is senior outfielder Elizabeth Johnson who has started 102 games for the Dragons. Infielder Samantha Gjerde, infielder Kaiya Sundeen and junior outfielder Shay Weber also return after combining for 38 starts a year ago. Junior Anna Lang is the most experienced pitcher returning; she led the team in wins (three) and ERA (2.88) in the abbreviated 2020 season.

After losing last year's season due to COVID, this team is hungry to make big steps forward and be competitive in every game we play. We have a lot of starting experience returning on our roster and we brought in key contributors in the last recruiting class that will make impacts both defensively and offensively. I am excited to get back at it on the field with this group of women and put together our best season yet.

Emma comes back to us after losing most of her senior season to COVID and she is ready to lay everything out there she's got. Emma is in her third year as a captain and is a mainstay in our line-up, as she continues to come up big for us when we need it. She provides us with great, consistent defense as well as being a threat at the plate. I look for her to be a strong, dependable presence for us this season as she finishes out her Dragon career.

#12 Anna Lang (RHP, Jr., New Berlin, Wis. / New Berlin Eisenhower HS) - Minnesota State University Moorhead

  • Went 3-3 with a 2.88 ERA in 34 innings pitched as a sophomore
  • Led team in wins and ERA
  • Threw first career shutout in win over Nyack (3/10/20), firing a five-hitter
  • Allowed just two earned runs over final three starts in Florida (15 IP)
Anna looks to help lead our pitching staff this spring after a great start to her sophomore season before it was ended by COVID. She is focused and driven to take on this leadership load and to put the Dragons in competitive situations throughout the season along with a fairly young staff. Anna has consistently improved during her career and we are ready to see her take the reins of the pitching staff this spring.

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

The Minot State softball team started its season 10-6 with a four-game winning streak prior to the cancellation of the remainder of the 2020 season. Senior Isis Cabral was pacing the team with a .480 batting average including four home runs and 18 RBI over 16 games started. 

Cabral also recorded a team-high .900 slugging percentage with nine doubles alongside a .526 on-base percentage. She recorded a season-high four hits on Feb. 28, 2020 against Mayville State and drove in a season-high five RBI in that same game. Cabral was named NSIC Player of the Week on Mar. 2, 2020 after hitting .692 with nine hits in 13 at-bats, while driving in 10 runs. During that week the Beavers went 4-0 at the Air-Supported Dome Invite. 

The Beavers were led in the circle by Roxanne Ines who posted a team-best ERA of 2.47 over 17.0 innings pitched. Ines recorded seven strikeouts despite not recording a decision in 13 appearances with four starts. Zoya Robbins led the team with six wins a season ago after appearing in 12 games with 10 starts and tossing a team-high 40.2 innings, alongside a team-high 27 strikeouts. 

Newcomer Trinity Valentine out of Central Arizona Junior College will add to the depth of the rotation for the Beavers entering the 2021 season. Valentine posted a 22-12 career-record with one save while tossing 242.1 career-innings with 159 strikeouts over 47 appearances, making 38 starts while at Central Arizona. 

I am excited about how hard our kids have worked this year and how well they are living out our cultural standards. This group returns a lot of speed and athleticism up and down the line-up. We will feature a fast and aggressive brand of softball both on offense and defense. Offensively, we expect to put a lot of balls in play and to put pressure on defenses. On defense we cover a lot of ground and close gaps quickly. I also expect our pitching to take a big step forward. As for any young team, it will be important that we learn from each outing and continue to make adjustments and learn.

#1 Isis Cabral (OF, Sr., R/R, Oxnard, Calif. / Oxnard HS) - Minot State University

Isis has put together a remarkable career both on and off the field here at MSU. She has made herself a complete ball player through sheer hard work over the last few years. She loves the grind and prepares with a deep passion for the game. Isis has also marked herself as an exceptional role model, quickly taking younger players under her wing and helping them navigate college life with genuine care for their success. Isis puts others above herself at every turn. A constant and joyful presence in the community, Isis often leads the charge in community service and simply connecting with others from all walks of campus life. She is a giver, and her legacy will be felt long after she graduates.

#23 Trinity Valentine (RHP, Jr.,  Las Vegas, Nev. / Durango HS) -  Minot State University 

  • Posted a 22-12 record at Central Arizona Community college over two seasons
  • Tossed 242.1 career-innings while at the college, with 159 strikeouts over 47 appearances, making 38 starts at Central Arizona
  • Will be a force in the circle as an experienced junior heading into the season
A JC transfer from Central Arizona College, Trinity is a leader who will take the ball regularly for the Beavers this spring. She possesses a quiet confidence and loves to compete. As a player who has logged a lot of big innings for CAC, Trinity brings valuable experience and poise to a young MSU pitching staff. We expect Trinity to bring a steadying presence to the staff and to lead with a calm, competitive fire.

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Northern State softball team was producing their best start in program history in 2020 prior to the spring cancelations due to COVID. The Wolves were 15-4, having opened the year with ten straight victories. Three single game and career records were broken by the Wolves, including Kennady Thompson becoming the all-time leader in average and RBI. Thompson was named the team’s player to watch in the league, returning to the NSU dugout for her senior campaign. Also named as a player to watch is sophomore pitcher, Meghan Anderson. Northern returns 15 from the 2020 roster and welcomes nine incoming freshmen and transfers. The Wolves will open the season on the road at the Minot State Tournament, February 20 and 21. 

This team has faced unprecedented challenges and met them head on. We had a great Fall and worked through all of our obstacles. The team feels like they have unfinished business from last season since it was cut short.

Kennady is a veteran within our program and has really bought into the process of our team. She’s an offensive leader and we expect big things from her this year.

  • Led the team with 68 strikeouts and a .185 opponent batting average
Megan is one of the hardest working pitchers I have ever worked with in my coaching career. She is aggressive in her pitching style, but always seems to have a smile on her face! Meghan has an air of confidence and is a competitor at heart. I am excited to see what all she can accomplish at Northern.

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS

USF’s Softball Team, which is coming off an 11-8 season cut short by the CoVID-19 pandemic, returns 12 student-athletes and welcomes in seven newcomers who hope to make an impact and improve on the ninth place projection in the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll in 2021. A year ago, USF ranked ninth in the NSIC in hitting (.285), eighth in pitching (3.27 ERA) and third in fielding (.963). With eight of the top nine hitters back along with two pitchers who combined for 13 starts and 23 appearances, fourth-year USF Head Coach Shannon Pivovar has a group to be excited about. Leading the offense will be two players who ranked in the league’s top 10 after playing 19 games a year ago. They include NSIC Player to Watch in freshman Shayla Running (.431, 7th, NSIC hitting; .569 slugging, .468 OBP,) and 1B/P Kaitlyn VanDerZwaag (.429 BA, 8th in NSIC; 2 HR, 10 RBI, .690 slugging and .579 OBP, 2nd in the NSIC) along with centerfielder Frankie Mickelson (career - .286 BA, 14 HR and 64 RBI). Cassie Van Beek (career - .261, 2 HR, 17 RBI, 9 SB), Lexie Swift (.279, 9 RBI, .393 slugging) and Emmie Uitts (.300 BA, .344 OBP). VanDerZwaag (4-2, 3.78 era, 10A, 3S, 24K) and USF’s Pitcher to Watch in sophomore Hanna Cress (5-3, 3.87 ERA, 13A, 10S, 2 CG, 47K). Among the newcomers include transfer Mika Rodriquez (13 career HRs, 67 career RBI).  

The ability to get our team together and play games is what excites me most about this upcoming season. We have a great bunch of kids who have rolled with every single punch and deflection we have thrown at them and have become better because of it. They work hard in the classroom, the weight room, and on the field and they have fun doing it. I am excited to watch their hard work pay off - our squad mixes speed and power offensively, a talented staff in the circle, and some fire in their belly due to the missed 2020 season. I can't wait for the first pitch of 2021 with this family.

  • Led USF in hits (25), doubles (8) and multi-hit games (9)
  • Made 17 starts in 19 games and recorded second most total bases (33) on team
  • Recorded .569 slugging and .468 OBP
Shayla Running's true freshman season was cut short due to COVID, but the Sioux Falls native didn't let that stop her from stepping into a leadership role immediately. She works her tail off and is constantly pushing the limit to gather more information - studying her swing and her defensive movement. She makes herself and her teammates better and will be a big force behind the success of our team.

#22 Hanna Cress (RHP, Fr., Omaha, Neb. / Millard West HS) - University of Sioux Falls

  • Was 5-3 with 3.87 ERA in 13 appearances with 10 starts
  • Totaled 38 innings, two complete games and had 47 strikeouts
  • Held opponents to .247 batting average and had at least five strikeouts in a game five times with one game of nine strikeouts

 

Hanna Cress has a desire to compete, to win, but more importantly, to push her teammates to be their best. She puts in the time to make herself better - using the COVID break as a time to focus on the little things. She is dedicated to her craft and has a steady presence on the mound. Both of those things will help her be successful this season.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

The 2021 Mustangs softball team returns a strong nucleus from a team that compiled a 9-7 record last season before the season was canceled in mid-March. SMSU returns every starter from last season and has a total of 12 letter winners returning. 

The SMSU offense will be led by several veterans, who were having outstanding 2020 seasons before having to be shutdown. Junior Bailey Johnson batted .438 with a team-high nine doubles and three home runs last season, while senior third baseman Kali Tomlinson hit .411 with a team-high 23 hits and added six doubles and three home runs. Redshirt freshman second baseman Jillian Noel clubbed seven doubles and batted .375 during her rookie season in 2020, while sophomore outfielder Lileya Kebos, also had a strong season batting .340 with 12 RBIs. Senior outfielder Emma Grote batted .322 and scored 15 runs a year ago and has played in 137 career games, while fellow senior first baseman Kaylee Hentges hit .318 with three doubles. Junior shortstop Madysson Schliinz also hit over .300 last season and led the team with two triples.

Senior Megan Cull helps lead the way in the circle for the Mustang after a team-low 2.28 ERA and a team-high 21 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. She finished 3-1 with one save in nine appearances. Redshirt freshman Allison Christians fired a team-high four complete games and finished 4-2 with a 2.94 ERA, while sophomore Shelby Bloemendaal is also back after leading the team with 33 innings pitched. 

Our team has done a great job of adapting to the ever changing COVID-19 environment. We are excited to have our seniors from our 2020 team come back to use their final year of eligibility. They bring back a ton of in game experience and are a great example for our young team. We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete.

  • Was named first team All-NSIC in 2019 batting .408 with 14 doubles and four home runs

  • Compiled a 3-1 record and one save with a 2.28 ERA in nine appearances with three starts

  • Has pitched in 71 career games with 33 starts and has recoded 197 strikeouts in 248 innings
Megan is a 5th year senior who is someone we can rely on to have in game experience for our younger staff. She excels in the classroom and has worked hard to get her game to where it is.

ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY

The St. Cloud State University softball team saw its 2020 season cut short just as the team was starting to find its groove. In 2021, the team looks to be just as strong, if not better, as the Huskies return their entire line up from the past season and six of nine starters from the 2019 team that appeared in the NCAA Regional. Super senior and captain Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrensville) is back for one last go around at St. Cloud State after earning All-Conference, All-Region and CoSDIA Academic All-District honors the past two seasons. Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ontario), Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield), Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) and Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) are back after award winning seasons in 2019, while Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bay Port), Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus) and Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) are expected to anchor a strong pitching line up. 

What excites me the most about this year's team is our commitment to the process and to each other. We have the entire team returning from last season, with the addition of three highly talented first-year player's. We will bring a balance of power and speed to our offensive line-up, as well as depth and athletisicm in our defensive line-up. The pitching staff will add to the defense with their versatility; as a group there pitching skills will complement each other. We are looking forward to getting back on the field together as a team and competing.

  • Hit .370 in COVID shortened 2020 with 27 hits in 73 at bats; ranked second on the team in batting average, on base percentage (.427), runs (16) and hits (27)
  • Led the team and ranked top-10 in the NSIC in batting average (.401), hits (77) and on base percentage (.447) as a junior in 2019
It has been very exciting watching Maya develop into one of the premier players in the league as a multi-tool threat at the plate and on the basepaths; and is the energy catalyst for our defense. Additonally, is one of the best to ever put on a Huskies Softball uniform. She is highly respected by her peers and professors for her work ethic, academic success, and her drive. As a future educator, she will bring that same energy, mentorship and a positive influence to her classroom.

  • Appeared in 12 games in 2020 with four starts; posted 3-2 record with 3.22 ERA and 23 strikeouts
  • Top relief pitcher for the Huskies in 2019; appeared in 18 games with one start; posted team-low 1.33 ERA, surrendering just nine earned runs in 47.1 innings pitched; went 5-0 in NSIC play with wins over Minnesota State, Concordia-St. Paul and Sioux Falls.
Lauren is a softball player who loves to practice, train, and has chases excellence. She has an internal drive that is non-stop; she is dedicated, determined, and is passionate. Above all she is a teammate that strives each day to not only make herself better, but inspires and motivates her teammates to be their best. Off the field, she has demonstrated a high-level of academic success, she takes an active role in several areas of our campus community, and has a service mentality.

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY

The Peacock softball team is ready to get back onto the field this spring under second-year Head Coach Ashley Hickman. Hickman and Assistant Coach Jessica Vernon have been working with the team at the Eischeid Softball Complex and in the Peacock Arts and Athletics Center to prep for the season ahead. In the pandemic shortened season of 2020, Upper Iowa was 6-11 overall and just about to take off for their final non-conference tournament of the season before their 30-game NSIC slate when the season was halted. The team will be led by returners Katie Crogan, Abby McKay and Kaylee Frenette. Crogan is a career .362 hitter for UIU with 129 hits and a slugging percentage of .601 thanks to 26 doubles, a triple and 19 home runs; the Peacock first baseman has driven in 102 runs while scoring 66 times. McKay appeared in nine games last season as a freshman and made six starts in the circle throwing 44.1 innings while posting a 3-4 record with a 5.21 ERA. Frenette has played in 64 games through two years with the Peacocks making 62 starts and recording a .327 average with 69 hits, 48 runs and 21 rbi. Due to the NCAA’s season of competition waiver, the 2021 roster for Upper Iowa features 20 players including five juniors, two sophomores and 13 freshmen; of the baker’s dozen notated as freshman, six will be in their second year in the program. UIU opens their season in Romeoville, Ill. on Feb. 18-19 in a tournament hosted by Lewis University. The Peacocks are slated to play in three non-conference tournaments before starting their NSIC schedule with Winona State University at home.

What excites me most for this year’s team is to see them compete against others. They have worked to continually grow and improve over the last year in different environments than normal. As a team they are always ready to go with a fun, aggressive attitude. We are excited to see their growth come full circle on the field this spring.

#4 Katie Crogan (1B, Jr., R/R, Watertown, Wis. / Watertown HS) - Upper Iowa University

  • Career averages of .362/.601/.406 with 129 hits including 26 doubles, a triple and 19 homers with 102 RBI and 66 runs scored
  • Named All-NSIC Second Team and All-NSIC Gold Glove Team following sophomore season
  • Played in 108 games for UIU and has started all 108 of them in three seasons
As Katie enters her fourth year at UIU, she has really thrived as being a top leader for us. She is accountable, driven, and has focused on making our team better during the past three years. Her work ethic is a driving force behind her continued success both on and off the field. We know that Katie will continue to push herself this season to achieve her goals.

#14 Abby McKay (RHP, Fr.,  Eldridge, Iowa / North Scott Senior HS) - Upper Iowa University

  • Appeared in nine games with six starts in the circle prior to the season being suspended posting a 3-4 record with a 5.21 ERA
  • Threw 44.1 innings including five complete games allowing 36 runs, 33 earned, while striking out 22 batters
  • McKay’s best week as a freshman last season came at The Spring Games in Florida when she went 2-0 throwing a pair of complete games and allowing just two runs on 10 hits while striking out seven
Abby has grown on the mound in the short amount of time she has been a Peacock. She puts in the extra amount of effort it takes to be in the lineup and a leader on the rubber. Abby has a high softball IQ, but works extremely hard in the classroom as well. We are excited to see Abby’s goals become realities this spring.

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

The Wayne State College softball team was 10-13 in non-conference play and had just completed a 5-3 Florida spring break trip when the remainder of the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.  The Wildcats return many key components from last season and look to prove they are better than the 15th place prediction in this year’s Preseason Poll.  Senior third baseman Ashley Hernandez had a hot start to the 2020 season hitting .418 with seven homers and 22 RBI.  Junior outfielder Kortney Buresh posted a .383 average with a team-high 31 hits and three triples in the shortened 2020 season.  Junior shortstop Kim Vidlak had a strong .320 average and was 8 for 9 in stolen bases last season.  The Wildcat pitching staff will be led by senior Maddie Moser, who was 4-2 with a 4.67 ERA last season.  Sophomore starter Hadley Chvatal had a 5-3 record with a team-best 2.68 ERA allowing just 18 earned runs in 47 innings last season.  Sophomore Sloan Cooksey turned into a stellar middle reliever for the ‘Cats last season with four saves and one complete game in 16 appearances.  Wayne State is slated to open the 2021 season on Friday, February 19th at the Emporia State Tournament facing Missouri-St. Louis and Northwest Missouri State. 

We have a great mix of talent in all of our classes. We have experience at every position and great leadership that comes from that experience. We felt really good about the beginning of last season and we're excited to see where this team will take us.

Ashley is a dedicated, hard working senior, who is a complete leader for our program. Her experience over the past 3 seasons has helped her be one of the most influential and positive teammates on our team. She was having a career year last season and we're excited to see her continue that this year.

Maddie is a reliable, dedicated senior pitcher with a wealth of knowledge and experience. She is a much loved leader on and off the mound. We're excited to see her build on her success from last season.

WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY

The Winona State softball team is set to start the 2021 season, as the Warriors look to continue the tradition of program excellence.  Head coach Greg Jones and WSU were 13-6 in the abbreviated 2019-20 campaign, amid a four-game winning streak when pandemic halted the season.  The strength of last years' start, plus the exciting blend of returning talent and a strong recruiting class, has Winona State looking to hit the ground running this spring. 

Leading the way for the Warriors is NSIC Preseason Player-of-the-Year Ali Nowak.  The senior catcher from New Berlin, Wis. has been the catalyst for WSU offensive surge in recent years including in 2019, her last full season, where Nowak hit .415 in 62 games, had 14 home runs, and drove in 61 RBI. Her slugging percentage was an eye-popping .729 that year.  

Winona State can rely on a strong set of arms as well. Senior Jordyn Kleman returns after earning a 2.40 ERA in ten appearances last year.  In the 2019 season, the La Crosse, Wis. product produced 29 wins, a Warrior record, going 29-4 in a historic WSU campaign. Also in the circle is Liz Pautz, who went 20-3 in 2019 and was 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA last spring when the season was halted.  

The Warriors will start the spring season on Feb. 19 against Southwest Minnesota State University, with a double-header at the RCTC Dome in Rochester, Minnesota. 

I am excited for our team to get back to the game they love. In a year filled with so much uncertainty and loss, I believe we are all looking forward to just being back on the field and getting back to competing again. We have a team balanced between experienced veterans and new faces, so I am looking forward to seeing how they blend and what direction this season takes.

  • Her slugging percentage was an eye-popping .729 in 2019
  • in 17 games last season she hit .510 with 12 RBI, 11 doubles and three home runs for a .902 slugging percentage
  • 2018-19 Winona State Female Student-Athlete of the Year

As an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholar and Winona State's Female Student/Athlete of the Year, Ali exemplifies all that is good about Division II. She has been able to be an elite level softball player while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning as many Academic Accolades as Athletic Honors. Ali's impact is felt every day in our program through her positive and contagious attitude, work ethic, and passion for softball and life outside the field of play.

Jordyn's work in the classroom, integrity, and strength, have been constants since her arrival on campus, and her continued leadership and positive attitude have been essential to our continued growth and direction as a program.
