MSU Wins its 10th Straight NSIC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship

MANKATO, Minn. –  Minnesota State won its tenth straight NSIC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship in one of the closest finishes this century.  The Mavericks, which also won their 12th championship in the last 13 years, totaled 201.5 team points to narrowly edge Augustana by a point and half. The Vikings had 200 points while MSU Moorhead was third with 68 points.  Additionally, three NSIC records were set at this year’s championships.

Down by 4.5 points to the Vikings going into the 4x400m relay, the Mavericks team of Max DePrenger, Drew Lewison, Carter Nesvold and Kornelius Klah finished first with a time of 3:20.60 which earned 10 points while Augustana finished fifth to earn four points and give the Mavericks the final edge 201.5 to 200.

Augustana’s Tyl Woelber repeated as NSIC high point performer as he scored 29 points after winning the heptathlon, was second in the triple jump, was fifth in the high jump and the 60m hurdles and sixth in the long jump.  
 
To start the track events, Nadir Yusef of MSU Moorhead set a record in the 5000m run with a time of 14:14.30, which eclipsed the 14:44.86 run by SMSU’s Bashir Aidrus in 2018. Augustana’s Austin Miller followed that up with a record run in the mile with a time of 4:08.88.  He broke the 2018 time of 4:09.74 ran by USF’s Mason Phillips. Northern State’s Tanner Berg put his name in the record books as he won the weight throw with a heave of 69-8 (21.23m) as he broke Wayne State’s Ross Bunchek’s mark of 68-11.25 (21.01m) from 2012.
 
Augustana’s Tiegen Lindner was named the NSIC Elite 18 Award winner as he held the high cumulative GPA of the student-athletes competing at the championship.
 
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Indoor Track & Field All-Conference Team. NSIC Indoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org. 

The NCAA National Championships will take place on March11-13 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The field of student-athletes participating will be announced on Tuesday, March 2 at approximately 5 p.m.
