BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY

The Bemidji State women’s track & field team returns to action outdoors after being picked to finish seventh in the 2021 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches’ Poll, its highest selection since at least the 2011 outdoor season. The Beavers most recently took a seventh-place finish during the 2019 NSIC Outdoor Championships, behind one all-conference performer. Head Coach Kevin Kean, in his sixth season with the program, had three student-athletes rank among the top 30 in the nation in their respective events. Leading the way from the 2019 season is Bemidji State’s Field Athlete to Watch, junior thrower Zoe Christensen. Christensen took fourth in the shot put and fifth in the hammer throw at the 2019 NSIC Outdoor Championships, setting personal records in both events at the meet. She is coming off a fourth-place finish in the shot put at the 2020-21 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. BSU’s Track Athlete to Watch, junior mid-distance runner Maryse Mbenoun, is making her first appearance with the Beavers outdoors after earning a conference title in the 600m run indoors. Mbenoun holds a personal record of 2:24.41 in the 800m run and is also a heptathlon athlete.

Our coaching staff has waited a very long time for this outdoor season to finally take shape. I wholeheartedly believe we are a stronger outdoor squad in every event group, and our student athletes have been ready to compete outdoors since last March. We have a strong leader in each event group and have been gaining traction climbing through the conference rankings all year. Its time for the tail winds to fly, and our athletes to execute.
Head Coach Kevin Kean

  • Won the 2021 NSIC Indoor Championship title in the 600m run
Maryse has brought a new level of competitiveness to everything she does here at Bemidji State. From the very first workout we could tell her intensity during training is second to none. Maryse if the type of workout warrior that loves the challenge of new expectations and will be successful at any event she competes in this outdoor season. Coming off of her Indoor 600M NSIC Champion experience its only a matter of time before her natural gifts and enthusiasm come together for amazing performances in the middle-distance realm. We are so proud to have her here at Bemidji State, and even more impressed with her perseverance through a difficult year.

After another incredible Indoor season of finishing 2nd place in the NSIC shot put with a new PR of 14.79m (48' 6.25") and 9th place finish in the Weight Throw, it is time for Zoe to move onto Outdoors with a refreshing chance to improve upon her former mark of 51.05m in the Hammer Throw. It has been really great to watch her development over the years and consistency at the more important meets later in the year. I see her dedication to the campus environment, student organizations, social justice, and athletics providing yet another School record in the Shot Put and really would like to thank her for her focus throughout such a confusing season. Zoe will end this season atop the record boards.

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

Marlon Brink, in his 21st year as head coach, looks for a much improved team finish for the Wildcats this season after placing 14th in the 2019 NSIC Outdoor Championships.  Field events and throws will be a strength again this season for Wayne State, led by junior Mckenzie Scheil who earned NCAA All-American honors in 2019 as a redshirt freshman placing seventh in the hammer throw.  Senior thrower Kenzie Sullivan was an All-NSIC finisher in the discus in 2019 placing third to go with a seventh place medal in the shot put two years ago.  Junior Jadin Wagner and redshirt sophomore Nicole Heeren add depth to the Wildcat throws area.  The top returning track athlete for the Wildcats is junior Jordyn Pester, who took fourth in the 400-meter dash as a freshman two seasons ago.  Freshman Megan Hansen in the hurdles is coming off a strong indoor season while the Wildcats have two solid high jumpers in senior Hanna Lazure and junior Alison Dykman.  Top returning distance runners include seniors Kim Johnson and Brianna Crouch.  Wayne State is scheduled to open the 2021 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday March 26th and 27th hosting the Wayne State Classic.

We have several athletes that I think can excel with the addition of some of the outdoor events - the hammer throw and discus for example. Also, our younger athletes have a better idea now of what the level of competition is like in the NSIC, so I think that will help motivate them to step up another level in training and competition.

McKenzie Scheil (Throws, Jr., Fairmont, Neb. / Fillmore Central HS) - Wayne State College

  • All American in hammer throw in 2019 (7th place)
  • Had strong indoor season, All-American 2nd place finish in weight throw
  • Back-to-back NSIC indoor champion in weight throw
McKenzie has a fire burning in her to be the best and she nearly accomplished that during the indoor season with her 2nd place finish at the NCAA National Meet. I think it will be burning even brighter during the outdoor season as she gets back to the hammer throw, an event she was an All-American in during the 2019 season.
