NSIC Team Previews & Players to Watch

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY

Isaac earned second team All-NSIC honors last season. He is an excellent leader both on and off the floor which is important as we are a very new group this year. He is an excellent perimeter shooter as well as a rugged rebounder for a wing.
Head Coach Tom Billeter
I am excited having eight new players and all of the challenges that brings. We have a very young but talented group of freshmen with two transfers mixed in, however, both have a great deal of experience. I think the league will once again be as good as any in the country and we are looking forward to a great winter of college basketball.
Head Coach Tom Billeter

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY

Mo is a dynamic athlete at the guard spot who can impact the game in multiple ways. We are counting on him to continue to make strides as a playmaker in order for us to be successful.
Head Coach Mike Boschee
I'm excited about the overall depth of this year's team. We will be young but have multiple players at each position that could potentially make an impact this season.
Head Coach Mike Boschee

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

Marcus has worked his butt off this summer to change his body, become stronger, and increase his ability to be a multi-threat player on the offensive end. Most exciting, he has matured so much and I am excited to watch him grow into a leader for our team.
Head Coach Matt Fletcher
I believe we have a group of guys that understand what it will take to win in this league. Building a culture and locker room full of great kids, and now watching them grow has been so fun. We will take it one week at a time and I truly believe we have big things ahead for CSP Basketball.
Head Coach Matt Fletcher

UNIVERSITY OF MARY

Gertautas has stepped into a leadership role on our team. He is obviously a talented player but what he brings our team extends far beyond the basketball floor. He is someone who our young guys look up to and go to for advice. On the court I look for him to build off of the player he was last year. In order for us to continue to improve he needs to be the consistent presence that we know he can be. He has a great mix of skill and size that can be a tough matchup for other teams.
Head Coach Jack Nelson
I am excited to see how much improvement we can show from my first year here. Last year there was a huge learning curve for every guy in our program whereas this year our new guys can look to our returners to see how we do things and what our standards and expectations are. Every year brings new challenges but having so many returners hopefully will allow us to navigate those challenges a little bit easier.
Head Coach Jack Nelson

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

Blaize brings a hard-working mentality to our program. He lives in the gym always working to improve his game. Blaize plays with a high level of toughness and leads by example. With his skillset, we feel like he will be able to play multiple positions to help our team on both sides of the ball.
Head Coach Bryan Beamish
We are very excited about this new roster. We feel we have a group of hungry players with athleticism and versatility. As a coaching staff, we have been very pleased with the attitude and effort of our group in fall workouts. They are great teammates, very competitive, and are a privilege to coach.
Head Coach Bryan Beamish

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

Austin is coming off a fantastic breakout season as NSIC North Player of the Year. With three years remaining in our program, he is fully healthy and will continue to be one of the tougher matchups in our league. His unique ability to score, pass & rebound at a high level makes our team go on both ends. I'm looking forward to seeing what his next step will be.
Head Coach Justin Wieck
I'm excited by our returning talent, experience and a sense of hunger within our program. Our team made huge strides last year, but they are far from satisfied. Our players have improved physically over the off-season. Their sense of purpose was fantastic. Returning eight of our nine rotational guys from last year, we have the mix to compete at a high level every night. We're looking forward to kicking off the season in November.
Head Coach Justin Wieck

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO

Brady has played a lot of college basketball in his short time here. His maturity and ability to lead this year really excites me. He's a player that has the ability to stretch the floor or get buckets in the paint.
Head Coach Matt Margenthaler
This team has many new faces, but I have really enjoy the way they have competed from day one. The energy in the gym is just different this year. We have some great length and size that should really cause problems for our opponents.
Head Coach Matt Margenthaler

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD

Gavin is an extremely driven man who has been an incredible leader for us in his 6 years here at MSUM. It's been a privilege to coach such a competitive athlete who brings it every day for his teammates. His well balanced game has allowed him to thrive in one of the best leagues in the nation. I'm confident to say that he is respected throughout the conference because of who he is as a person and his consistent level of play. He's had an outstanding career as a Dragon and I'm Fired Up for the journey with Gavin and the team in his final season.
Head Coach Tim Bergstraser
We are fortunate to bring back a core group from last years NSIC Tournament Championship team. This team has shown a great investment towards their teammates and this program in the pre season. Our four veteran seniors have served as outstanding leaders for this team and making sure we are improving. It's fulfilling to coach men who are bought in on getting better each day. Excited to see how players step up and assume new roles in a league full extremely good teams and coaches.
Head Coach Tim Bergstraser

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

We are very excited to have Cam’Ron back for his third season with us. He has started every game he has been in our program and brings great leadership to our team. He brings a little bit of everything to the court as shown by his stat line from last season averaging 12.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals. Cam will graduate from Minot State this spring with a triple major in Business Management, International Business and Marketing.
Head Coach Matthew Murken
We are excited to have the chance to showcase the work that a lot of our student-athletes have been doing behind the scenes. With the COVID year we returned four seniors for a sixth season last year. We will have a number of players stepping into a new, expanded role that comes one year later than they expected it. I have tremendous respect for those young men believe in our program and working hard waiting for this opportunity. We also have some exciting additions to our program in a seven-man recruiting class. Our team will feature some length and athleticism that we have not had in recent seasons.
Head Coach Matthew Murken

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

Sam is a dynamic play maker who creates for himself as well as others. His ability to get to the rim is a big part of our offense. He is also exactly the type of leader you want at the point guard position. Sam stepped up many times late in games last years. He had a great season for us last year and our expectations are for him to build on his success this season.
Head Coach Saul Phillips
We have a lot of experience returning on this year's roster. Sam Masten, Jacksen Moni, Jordan Belka and Gus Reede all have been through a lot of close games together and I trust their decision making in big moments. I also like our length as a team. We can put out some really big lineup combinations on floor. The screen and roll combination of bigs that can shoot and guards that can create also excites me. Finally, I think we have a very good point guard and that is always and important foundation for success.
Head Coach Saul Phillips

University of Sioux Falls

Matt is a great teammate and makes those around him better in every way. As one of the best shooters in the country he is an extremely important player for us offensively. He has really improved in the other areas of the game such as defense and rebounding. Matt has proven to be one of the best players in the NSIC and we are excited to see what he can do this year.
Head Coach Chris Johnson
We are excited about the mix of our group. We have 8-9 returners that have seen NSIC action along with a group of new guys we expect to impact our program right away. We really like our depth at every position and expect to play a large number of guys over the course of the year. We are excited to work with this group as they have proven to be extremely hard working and talented.
Head Coach Chris Johnson

Southwest Minnesota State University

Experience wins in the NSIC more times than not. Jake is a guy who has developed during his career. Now entering his fifth season he knows what to expect. He added a perimeter shot to his game. He will have an opportunity to have some big games. Excited to watch his progress.
Head Coach Brad Bigler
We have a good mix of experience and young talent on the roster. This fall has been very competitive to see who makes the lineup. Proud of how hard our guys have worked up to this point. The defensive abilities of Cliff and Dunwa on the perimeter will give other teams a challenge. Our three redshirt freshmen in Jakob Braaten, Majok Majouk and Jake Layman will provide us depth. Our tough non-conference schedule to start the year will help prepare us for the NSIC schedule.
Head Coach Brad Bigler

St. Cloud State University

Matt has been with the program for two seasons and has improved his production year to year. He has been a diligent worker, a great teammate, and has put together a solid summer. As the leading returning scorer from a season ago he is poised for a great sophomore campaign. As a leader, he is somebody that is looked up to on our campus and in our community.
Head Coach Quincy Henderson
We are excited about the opportunity to compete. This group of guys is motivated and have not shied away from the work. As individuals and collectively they are committed to getting better on the daily and that is all I can ask for.
Head Coach Quincy Henderson

Upper Iowa University

Jake has been a big part of our team the last three years and will continue to be one of our leaders. He has done a great job improving every year and I am excited to see what strides he takes this season.
Head Coach Brooks McKowen
I like experience and leadership that we bring back from last season. We have a core group that has played a lot of minutes for our program that I believe are ready to take bigger roles this season. There is also a good mix of new faces that will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact.
Head Coach Brooks McKowen

Wayne State College

Justin has developed himself into a high level NSIC player. It has been exciting to watch his development as he truly has become one of the most complete players in the NSIC and how he has impacted our team with his positive leadership.
Head Coach Jeff Kaminsky
Experience will be an asset for our team. We have seven of our top eight returning scorers from last season. We have three players (Jordan Janssen, Nate Mohr, and Nick Ferrarini) who are in their fifth season of college basketball, utilizing their extra season of eligibility this year. Jordan and Nate have played significant roles in helping our program win two NSIC South division titles in the past four years. We have eight players players returning who have played significant minutes, three in their fifth season and five other (including 1st team all-conference guard Justin Eagins) players who are in their third season in our program. We led the NSIC in turnover margin last season and were second overall in team defense. The biggest improvement we have made to our roster is to improve our skill (shooting) and overall depth.
Head Coach Jeff Kaminsky

Winona State University

Luke is the type of player that every good team has to have. He brings a toughness & energy to our program on a daily basis. Luke is a tireless worker who has improved offensively each season. With some key departures from last year, he will have an opportunity for an even greater scoring role while we will again count on him to be an anchor for us with his defense and rebounding.
Head Coach Todd Eisner
The 2022-23 season will be exciting from the standpoint of molding a team where opportunities exist for expanded roles for returning players and possible immediate playing time for some of our new players. We have to replace Devin Whitelow, a 5-year starter at PG, and a 1st team all-NSIC player in Alec Rosner on the perimeter. Our 3 returning starters (Martens, King, Drew) will need to provide production and leadership each game and I am excited to watch Connor Dillon's continued development as another key returner on the perimeter. If we can stay healthy, I do believe we have better overall depth which should make practices more competitive and give us more options for playing time in games.
Head Coach Todd Eisner
