MINNESOTA STATE SELECTED IN NSIC MEN'S INDOOR PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - The 11-time defending NSIC Champions of Minnesota State University, Mankato were picked to win the NSIC in the preseason men's indoor track & field coaches' poll. The Mavericks received 11 first place votes and tallied 121 points, ranking them ahead of Augustana, which was second with 107 points and the other first place vote.

Concordia-St. Paul's Jakob Tordsen field) and Minnesota State's Tanner Maier (track) were selected as the preseason athletes of the year. Tordsen finished first in the heptathlon with a score of 5026 at the SDSU Holiday Open last season  and was runner-up in the heptathlon with a score of 5279 at the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-NSIC honors.  Maier is the MSU record holder in the 800m run and is a two-time All-American after a third-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:50.57 at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships

The 2022-23 NSIC indoor track & field season gets underway this weekend with the regular season culminating on Friday-Saturday, February 24-25 at the NSIC Championship held at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minnesota, hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato.

  • Became a two-time All-American after a third-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:50.57 at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships
  • Ran to a third-place finish with a time of 4:12.53 in the mile to earn All-NSIC honors last year
  • Earned a second place finish in the 1500m at the NSIC Outdoor Championships a year ago
  • Placed third at the NSIC Cross Country Championships this fall 
  • School record holder in the 800m run
Tanner is coming off a strong cross country campaign in 2022 with a career year in the 2021-2022 track and field season. As the indoor/outdoor school record holder, Tanner looks to continue leading the men's distance squad to new heights while fighting for an individual national title in the 800m this season.

Jake returns for his final indoor season as a two-time All-American and CSP's Male Athlete of the Year for the 2021-2022 academic year. After finally putting together the seasons he had envisioned for quite some time last year, he enters this year with some high goals, which are supported by his work capacity and attentiveness to detail; both are qualities that are important for success in the combined events.

The returners on this year's team are eager to resume competition after an outdoor championship last spring, which didn't meet their expectations. There are solid foundations in each event area and young, developing depth that will sustain the program in seasons to come.

Thomas has taken some measurable steps forward in practice this fall following his breakout season last year and a strong off-season of training. In his third year in the program, he has a larger role as "The Guy" in the sprint group and has a lot of younger athletes looking to him for guidance. We are excited to see him take the next step forward in his development.

There is a lot of young talent on this team that is ready to show their skill. It could be a special season for the relay group and for continuing to improve on conference placement. I am most excited by the culture that they bring to our team and the standard that they hold each other to. They have lofty goals and many achievements that they are pursuing.

Brendon is ready for a breakout sophomore season, looking to land high on the national list along with pursuing another conference title. Brendon shows great maturity in his approach to the sport. Making improvements in every aspect of his craft has allowed him to blossom into one of the best in the conference. Brendon leads by example and holds his teammates to a high standard.

Hayden shows up every day to work hard and reach his full potential. All those days have added up to him being a challenger in the long jump in our conference. It only takes one and we are excited to see what all his off-season work has done to help him improve and lead our jumps squad.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

Our men's program has grown in depth over every event group with young talent and deeper, more competitive training groups. It's exciting to think about how that depth is going to serve us in creating a championship level environment.

We return many pieces from last years team that won both NSIC titles and finished 6th in the country indoors. With an excited new recruiting class, we look to build on last year and push towards our team goals at the conference and national level. This years version of the Mavericks is one of the most talented groups in school history.

We again have a roster that has the ability to compete with the best teams and individuals in the NSIC .

Braxton has grown more focused, more mature, and elevates his level of training and racing each year he’s with our program. This led to his first NSIC Championship at 800m last season. This season our team will once again look to him to be one of the most competitive middle distance runners in the NSIC.

Since joining our team, Shy has established himself as one of the best jumpers in the NSIC and NCAA DII. During this time, he has also experienced immense growth in maturity and leadership that has positively impacted the overall culture and competitiveness of our team.

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

This is a very young track and field team, and they are growing together in all phases of life. Minot State University is in its first phase of rebuilding this historic program. Our student-athletes understand that and that is what excites me as their coach. The student-athletes understand that there is plenty of work do, and there is no one else better for the job than them.

Francis is an engine. Despite the workload you throw at him, Francis manages to complete the task at hand. This is a very special characteristic to have as an athlete. I'm excited to see what he is capable of this season.

Leif is Minot State's only returning All-American from a season ago. Just that status alone excites us about Leif. However, he has not let that go to his head and he is working twice as hard to be better in every event that he does.

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

We return a veteran squad along with a talented group of freshmen athletes. This mixture of talent has been training hard this fall and are excited for the indoor season. We have several All-Conference returners and we expect them to continue to excel.

Jackson will enter his final season for the Wolves. He has had an amazing cross country season and we expect him to carry that over into the indoor season as well. Last season he broke both the 3K & 5K school records. We expect him to lower them this year and be a national contender.

Glen returns this year after being an indoor All-American for the Wolves in the pole vault. He had an amazing summer of training and qualified for the Common Wealth Games for his home country. We look forward to see him hit new heights this year.

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS

USF didn't graduate any athletes that scored at the Indoor Championships from 2021-22 and after a strong outdoor season and fall track conditioning, USF men are looking to move up in the team standings at the NSIC Indoor Championships.

Ben is returning to the track after an outstanding sophomore year both indoors and outdoors. He is number two all-time for USF in the 60m high hurdles just missing making the finals at last year's NSIC Indoor Championship. He was just off an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the hurdles.

Tyler was an NSIC indoor place winner in the shot put and an NCAA national qualifier as a freshman. He is the USF school record holder both indoor and outdoor in the shot put. After a strong outdoor season, Tyler is looking to place higher in the throwing events this season.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

We have seen a lot of progress with this young group of student athletes. With a roster of two-thirds freshmen and sophomores, records will continue to fall. We hope to make a move up in the NSIC standings.

Tyler enters his sophomore healthy and that goes along away in his progression and development as an athlete. Tyler has had a nice fall of training up to this point. He has the ability to drop some fast times as the indoor season develops.

Hunter looks to move up in the pole vault this indoor season. After breaking the SMSU outdoor pole vault record last, placing 7th at the NSIC Championships, Hunter looks to break the indoor pole vault record while moving up in the NSIC standings.

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY

We are young on the men's side this season, I am excited to see how these men have progressed and during the fall portion of our program. It will be fun to watch them compete during indoor season.

I am excited to see Alex compete this season! He came here highly recruited out of high school and we are looking for him to make an immediate impact during his freshman campaign. He has had a strong fall of training and looks eager to get out there and compete!

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

This year's team has a good mix of returning talent, along with several newcomers, who I think will have a chance to score points for the team. I think with a steady improvement throughout the season, this team can improve on our 7th place finish at the 2022 NSIC Indoor Championships.

Brandon has really stepped up his level of competitiveness. I think making the 1500m final at the NSIC Outdoor Championships really changed his perspective on what he can do as a collegiate runner. He is willing to push himself to the limits in both training and racing. I am really excited to see what he can do this year.

Logan had a phenomenal freshman year placing in both the long and triple jump events both indoors and outdoors. He set a new school record in the triple jump indoors and a new school record in the long jump outdoors. He is only going to get better this year with experience and confidence. I think he can contend for a spot at the National Meet this year.
