ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minnesota State won its third NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship behind an impressive performance at Clark Swisher Athletic Complex in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Mavericks, which also won the 1983 and 2016 championships, scored 191 points to finish 64 points ahead of second place Augustana. Six records fell at this year’s championship and another was tied.
Minnesota State’s Mckayla Jackson earned NSIC High Point Performer for the Championship as she won three events and was part of a winning relay to score 32.5 points. Jackson set records in the 100m, 200m, won the long jump and was part of the winning 4X100 meter relay.
Jackson ran 11.43 in the 100m dash to break the 1983 record of 11.51 run by Mankato State’s Jeri Domes. In the 200m Jackson break the day-old record ran by teammate Denisha Cartwright. Jackson ran 23.56, while Cartwright had run 23.70 in the prelims. Jackson won the long jump with a leap of 19-11.50 (6.08m) and was part of the 4X100m relay that ran 45.48.
Other records were Cartwright winning the 100m hurdles in 13.28 to break the mark of 13.40 ran by UMD’s Danielle Kohlway in 2019. Winona State’s Shereen Vallabouy ran 53.60 in the 400m to break the mark of 54.40 run by WSU’s Megan Seidl in 2017. The University of Mary’s D'Andra Morris leaped 42-2 (12.85m) in the triple jump to break the 2015 mark of 41-4.5 jumped by UMary’s Danylle Kurywchak. Arika Robinson tied the high jump record with her leap of 5-9.75 (1.77m) which tied the mark of Augustana Mearah Miedema from 2021.
The first record fell in the first track final of the championship as Winona State’s Lindsay Cunningham ran 34:09.57 in heavy winds to best the 2018 time of 34:12.43 ran by Northern State’s Sasha Hovind. The second record on Friday came in the prelims of the women’s 200m where Minnesota State’s Denisha Cartwright ran 23.70 (wind -1.6) to best the previous record of 23.98 held by Jeri Domes, Mankato State (1983), Brittany Henderson, Minnesota State (2010) and Ja’Cey Simmons, Minnesota State (2021).
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.
The 2022 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships are May 26-28 at Grand Valley State Track and Field Stadium in Allendale, Michigan. The entire field for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 17 on NCAA.com.
