Tanner Berg became the first Northern State men's National Champion in the hammer throw , competing for the 2022 NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Berg entered the championships with the top throw in the nation and defended that placing with the first National Championship of his career.
The Wolves graduate student held his position at the top beginning with his second toss of the day, a 68.77m heave, which would have sealed the National Championship alone. He extended that to 69.40m on his next attempt and sealed the victory on his final toss of the day. Berg threw 69.61m (228-04.00) on his sixth attempt, defeating the national runner-up, Austin Combs of Findlay, by 1.7-meters.
The Watertown, S.D. is just the second national champion for the men's track and field team in program history. In addition, he is the eighth individual national champion in the department, following in the footsteps of Doug Neuharth (wrestling), Dave Harvey (wrestling), Henry Schneider (track and field), Matt Meuleners (wrestling), Amanda Madden (track and field), and Hannah Kastigar (swimming).
Berg concludes his Northern State career as a 7-time track and field All-American. He tallied two All-American honors in the hammer throw; this season and a season ago. In addition, he was a 4-time All-American in the weight throw, placing as high as second earlier this spring, and a 2021 indoor All-American in the shot put. In addition, Berg was honored as the NSU Clark Swisher Award winner earlier this spring.
OTHER PERFORMANCES
Mckenzie Scheil and
Brooklynn Chipps placed second and third in the hammer throw Thursday afternoon to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Women's Outdoor National Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan and hosted by Grand Valley State University. It's the ninth time in the last 10 years that Wildcat women's track and field has had at least one All-American. Scheil, a graduate of Fillmore Central HS, scratched on her first two attempts in prelims before recording a mark of 180' 10" to qualify eighth for the finals. In the finals, Scheil scratched on her first throw but followed with marks of 187' 10" and 195' 5" on her final throw to move up to second place.
It's the third time Scheil has collected All-American honors in the hammer throw, placing second last year (2021) along with a seventh place finish in 2019. Scheil entered nationals with the top regular season mark of 201' 4" at the Wildcat Classic in Wayne March 25th.
Chipps, a junior from Elgin (Clearwater HS), finished third in the hammer throw with a top heave of 192' 11". In prelims, Chipps scratched two of her three attempts but posted a mark of 186' 7" on her second attempt to enter finals with the fifth-best throw. Chipps recorded her top mark of 192' 11" on her second attempt in finals after scratching on her first throw. She finished finals with a mark of 182' 9" and collects her first-ever All-American honor.

Brea Perron earned Second Team All-American honors with a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw. Perron recorded a mark of 180' 3'' (54.94m) in the event. In the long jump, sophomore
Makayla Jackson finished third in the event earning First Team All-American honors with a leap of 20' 4.5'' (6.21m). This is the second time Jackson has earned All-American honors in the event. Freshman
Kary Petricka finished sixth in the event with a distance of 19' 8.75'' (6.01m). Petricka also earned First Team All-American honors for her performance.
Minnesota State University Moorhead senior
Nadir Yusuf finished 10
th in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night in Allendale, Mich. Yusuf ran a time of 29:40.84. The finish earned Yusuf All-American second team honors. Yusuf ran with the top pack for the first half of the race before settling just outside the top eight before crossing the line in 10
th. The Willmar graduate capped off one of the most decorated distance running careers in Dragon history. He finished with two All-American first-team honors (one each in cross country and track), an All-American second team honor, seven NSIC titles in track, four school records, 12 All-NSIC honors in track, one All-NSIC first-team honor in cross country (and three second teams).
A pair of powerful performances by
Samoya Neil and
D'Andra Morris on the opening day of the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Outdoor Track & Field national championships earned the University of Mary duo All-American honors. Neil claimed 7
th place and Morris 8
th in the long jump. Neil hit her top mark of the day right out of the chute. The freshman from St. Andrews, Jamaica, connected for a jump of 6.00 meters (19-8.25) on her first attempt of the day. She ranked 4
th after the first round and 5
th entering the finals. This is the first time Neil has earned All-American honors in two trips to the NCAA championships. She previously competed at the indoor championships in March. Morris kept gaining momentum throughout the day on her way to All-American status. The senior from Kingston, Jamaica, opened with a mark of 5.84 meters before producing efforts of 5.90 and 5.92 on her next two attempts to earn a spot in the finals. Ranked 8
th entering the finals, Morris had her best mark of the day on her 6
th and final attempt when she sailed 5.93 meters to solidify her top eight finish. For Morris, this is her 7
th time earning All-American honors and the second time in the long jump. She placed 8
th at the 2022 indoor championships before winning the triple jump national title the next day.
