Rochester, Minn. - A two RBI walk-off hit from Sidney Zavoral helped the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over the Wayne State College Wildcats on Thursday afternoon in Rochester, Minn. After dropping a 1-0 decision to St. Cloud State in game one of the day, UMD used the walk-off win over Wayne State to keep their season alive and advance in the NSIC Tournament. UMD will now face Southwest Minnesota State at 10:00 AM CT on Friday in Rochester.
After struggling at the plate in game one, the Bulldogs got their bats going in their 4-3 victory over Wayne State. Zavoral led the way for UMD going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, one double, two stolen bases and the game winning walk-off hit. After noting one of UMD's two hits in game one, Kiana Bender followed it up going 2-for-4 in game two with two runs and a double. Also chipping in a big RBI during Thurday evening's win was Kelly Swank, who was named All-NSIC Second Team on Wednesday afternoon. Additionally, Dea Deleon noted two hits against Wayne State, including a lead-off single in the seventh inning to start UMD's rally.
On the mound for the Bulldogs, both Sam Pederson and Lauren Dixon pitched gems on Thursday afternoon. During game one's loss to St. Cloud, Dixon gave up just two hits and one earned run, while striking out eleven batters in six innings of work. One of the two hits given up by Dixon would end up being the game winning home run. With the loss, Dixon falls to 16-8 overall on the year. In game two, Pederson battled through seven innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run. With the win, Pederson improves to 14-4 during her senior season. Additionally, with a strike out in game two against Wayne State, the Bulldogs pitching staff broke UMD's single season strikeout record with 326 on the season.
