SEASON PREVIEWS & ATHLETES TO WATCH

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY

The Vikings men's cross country team, which is coming off a season in which they won their 11th NSIC title and earned a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships, returns five All-NSIC runners in 2022. Senior’s Henry Klitzke, Kray Person, and Matt Steiger, as well as Junior Colten Brand and Sophomore Ryan Hartman, each earned All-NSIC first team honors last season. Hartman was also the NSIC Newcomer of the Year with his second-place finish at the NSIC Championships.

Two NCAA All-Americans will return for the Vikings this season in Hartman and Klitzke. Hartman placed 22nd at the NCAA Division II Championships while Klitzke crossed the finishing tape in 36th. Augustana had a stellar 2021 with a pair of runner-up team finishes to start the year, including the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival with predominantly Division I programs, while then winning the NSIC Championship and Central Region Championship. The Vikings parlayed that into a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championship. Head coach Tracy Hellman won the NSIC Coach of the Year for the 11th time and earned the USTFCCCA Central Region Coach of the Year for the eighth time.

Our men's team returns a core group from last year's podium team. Every year is challenging and it will be exciting to see what this team can accomplish.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

A program on the rise over the last several seasons, Concordia-St. Paul men’s cross country will look to continue that climb in the 2022 season. The Golden Bears, who ranked 13th out of 13 in 2015, jumped up five spots for the 2016 season, had back-to-back seventh place finishes in 2017 and 2018 in a 12-team league before a fifth-place finish in an expanded Northern Sun team pool of 14 teams in 2019. Last season, a young CSP squad tallied a 10th place finish in the 2021 NSIC Championships.

Matthew Helser was tabbed as an athlete to watch as the Big Lake, Minnesota native picked up a pair of top-20 finishes on the year last year before taking home a 62nd place result in the conference championship meet. Junior Travis Andrews also returns after a top-50 finish in the NSIC Championships while sophomores Owen Erickson and Matt Krummel finished 68th and 69th, respectively.

The program is led by the steady leadership of head coach Jonathan Breitbarth. He is aided by Matt Buns, who was promoted to associate head coach of the program during the summer of 2021 in recognition of his steady contributions to the program from both a coaching and recruiting standpoint.

Concordia opens the season on Sept. 2 at the Augie Twilight at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. before heading east to the Br. John Paddy Doyle Meet of Champions in Riverdale N.Y. on Sept. 16.

We can't wait for the 2022 season to begin. Our men's team will have a strong sophomore-junior core of runners who have consistently taken a step forward each season. The teamwork our guys' show and their commitment to pack running is a vital part of our success in the 2022 campaign. With the strong culture of encouragement and support that our guys exhibit, we are primed to take another step forward as a program this fall.

  • Finished 16th in the Bob Waxlax Invitational (27:48.2)

Matthew is a self-made runner.  His success comes from his self-discipline, routine habits, and focus.  All signs point to Matthew having the best cross country season of his life this coming fall.  What is great about Matthew is that with every success Matthew has, he stays humble as a student-athlete.  His ability to put the success of his teammates ahead of his success has a tremendous impact on our Golden Bear program.
Head Coach Jonathan Breitbarth

UNIVERSITY OF MARY

The University of Mary men’s cross country team is coming off their most successful NCAA campaign and enters the 2022 season looking to maintain the program’s impressive momentum. The Marauders finished 2nd at the Northern Sun championships and 6th place at the NCAA Central Regional, both program bests.

Dawson Strom keys a strong returning group. The senior from Moorhead, Minn., is a 2-time All-NSIC second team performer in cross country. He placed 13th in the conference in 2021 as UMary finished as the Northern Sun runner-up. Strom also owns six career podium finishes at the conference indoor and outdoor championship meets.

Despite losing a pair of all-conference runners, UMary has a veteran squad. Guillermo Fregoso placed 21st at the 2021 NSIC championships and fellow junior Robert White was 24th to just miss league honors. White followed with a 45th place finish at regionals, the 3rd best UMary mark.

Caleb Yokom also returns. The sophomore had a strong start to the season in 2021, placing 3rd at the MSU Dragon Twilight and 27th at Griak before being sidelined by injury.

UMary opens their season at the MSU Moorhead Twilight Meet on September 9 before taking on the challenge of the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on September 23. Overall the Marauders will race in four meets prior to the start of championship season starting with the NSIC championships on November 5.

The men have shown great strides with their summer training and culture and are ready to put their hard work on paper. We have a group of young guys coming in who can learn from the older guys and develop to get even closer to getting to the next stage of competition! The drive they have already is astounding and will be coming into this season with a chip on their shoulder!

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

The Golden Eagle men's cross country team had vast improvements during the 2021 season and they look to build to their successes in 2022. We have a tight group of returners and four talented freshmen joining us. I can't wait to see what the team will be able to accomplish this season!

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's cross country team is looking forward to building upon their fourth place finish during the 2021 NSIC campaign. Coach Brette Jensen looks to lead the Bulldogs in her first official cross country season. The Bulldogs return five of their top ten runners from last season including seniors Lucas Selman and Sam Ringger along with juniors Jack Van Kempen, Nick Jacobson, and Owen Dickenson. UMD will look for a strong season from Owen Dickenson who finished as a top three Bulldog in all but one contest last season. The core group of returning men along with a strong group of young, up-in-coming underclassmen, have the Bulldogs poised for a breakout season.

We are bringing on a young group with a ton of potential and looking to build off a great season last year. MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO

Embarking on his third season at the helm of the Minnesota State men's cross country program, Ben Held will look to junior Tanner Maier to help guide a young team that boasts a good mix of veterans and youngsters. The drive that he has to succeed at anything he does is very impressive which makes him a natural leader. He has been putting in quality milage this summer that will push him to the top on the NSIC and Region.

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

The Minot State cross country teams look to build off a strong 2021 season that saw  the men finish in the upper half of the NSIC standings. Second-year coach Sarah Fowler returns a bulk of the top performers from last year's squad,  led by All-NSIC performer Jacob Jensen. Jensen looks to improve on his 10th-place finish and has his sights set on a potential trip to the NCAA Championships. Depth will be a key for Minot State  who return four of their top-5 finishers (Jensen, Grayson Bonilla, Trent Holiday, and Camden Jasmin) from last year’s seventh-place team. And with meets both close to home, and against power-packed fields, the Beavers look to prepare for the NSIC Championship by competing against the best.

Minot State's men's team wasn't afraid to set big goals for this upcoming season and they've backed up their goals with a fantastic bout of summer training. We have a great group of men who work really well together, have identical goals, and aren't afraid to put the team first and play their own part to make this team great. Everybody has a role. We have the deepest talent that we've ever had and I'm very excited to see where it takes us. I can see another historic year in the making. It's going to be a fun season.

I've worked with many high caliber athletes and Jacob has what it takes. He's not an athlete you should ever count out.

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

Northern State enters the 2022 season with 14 student-athletes on the roster, one of the largest in recent memory for the Wolves. Jackson Harrison was the team’s highest finisher at both events, taking 17th at the league meet. The Aberdeen native was tabbed as the Wolves runner to watch for the upcoming season. The 2022 roster includes eight returners and six newcomers, ranging from five different states. Northern kicks off the season on September 2 at the Augustana Twilight.

This group of men are the perfect mix of veterans and rookies. They have been putting in the miles over the summer and have already become a tight-knit group. Their passion for the sport and the friendly competition amongst teammates will play a huge role in their improvement. It will be fun watching them develop throughout the fall.

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY

Upper Iowa’s men’s cross country team, led by Head Coach Nate Rucker, is primed to get back on the race course again this fall. Last year, the men’s team finished 14th at the NSIC Championships with an average time of 29:07.62 to complete the 8K course and 31st at the regional with a combined time of 35:30.00 for the 10K race. Dalton Baker led UIU with times of 28:08.91 and 34:25.20 in the postseason races. Baker’s time in the 10K regional race set a new program record for UIU and the senior is expected to lead the Peacocks in 2022. Upper Iowa opens the fall at Luther College on Sept. 10 and will compete four times prior to this year’s NSIC Championships.

Excited about this group of men this fall! We have a good mix of returners and new faces for this men's program. They should be fun to watch as they grow and mature as group over the next few months.
Head Coach Nate Rucker

  • Ran for an average of 28:11.87 in 8k races and 22:78.63 in 4-mile races
Having Dalton back in the lineup is a nice boost for our program. Having that senior leadership is vital for this group of men as we welcome a solid group of freshmen. Dalton will be able to utilize his knowledge as a collegiate distance runner to help these young men grow and understand what it means to be a college athlete.
Head Coach Nate Rucker

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

Seven of the nine runners on this year’s Wayne State men’s cross country team are returners as the Wildcats look to improve on last year’s 11th place finish in the NSIC Championships.  Wildcat Runner to Watch Brandon Mundorf, a junior from Springview, Nebraska, was the top WSC runner at the season-ending NCAA Central Regional and had a strong finish to the season.  The lone senior on the team is Will McGonigal while juniors Abe Schroeder and Gabe Peitz bring experience to the Wildcat squad.  Junior transfer Titus Kiptoo (American International University) will contribute immediately after finishing in the top 20 in the NCAA East Region both years.  Wayne State opens the 2022 season at the Augustana Twilight Invite September 2nd and will host two meets again this season – the Wildcat Classic on September 23rd and the NSIC Championships November 5th.

Our men's team lost several key performers, however, we have brought in a couple new recruits who I think will make an immediate impact for us. Also, some of our younger guys have stepped up and had a good track season and summer of training. They are also motivated to run well on our home course for the NSIC Championships coming up in November.
Head Coach Marlon Brink

  • Top WSC runner at last year’s NCAA Central Regional
  • Season-best 11th place finish at Morningside Invite
  • Finished 22nd at Wildcat Classic
Brandon was a solid #3 runner for us most of the meets last year and then really finished the season well last year, being the top finisher at NCAA Regionals for us. He followed that up with an excellent track and field season in the spring. I think he is really starting to find his way in the college racing environment and has some high goals set for himself and the team this season.
Head Coach Marlon Brink

WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY

The Winona State University men’s cross country team heads into the 2022 season with a core group of talent, and with the goal of moving up the NSIC team standings this fall.
The 2022 edition of the Warriors will feature seven runners, six of whom are returners.

Leading the Warrior way is Mitchell Buerkle, tabbed as the WSU men’s cross country preseason Athlete-to-Watch. Buerkle, a junior from Springfield, Minn., earned NSIC All-Conference Honorable Mention last year and owns a 26:35 PR on 8K courses and a 31:55.4 in 10K races.

Joining Buerkle as juniors this year are Mitchell Johnstone and Andrew Metcalf, and two seniors, Brady Omtvedt and Wyatt Taylor. Tyler Merrell is the team’s lone sophomore and Connor Hallaway joins the Warrior program as a freshman this fall.  Winona State will open the season at the University of Green Bay on Sept. 9.

The team is very cohesive. It's a small group, but they care about each other and are challenging each other to become better. They have a great attitude and want to be competitive in our conference. I love their work ethic and how they manage themselves. Consistent training and staying healthy will be the key.

He is super dedicated and is a very competitive person. His training has been going well and he is a much stronger runner then a year ago. This is the year Mitchell can start showing his true potential.
