2023 NSIC Baseball Preseason Coaches' Poll 1/18/2023 10:00:00 AM Minnesota State picked in NSIC Baseball Preseason Coaches' Poll BURNSVILLE, Minn. - The reigning NSIC Tournament Champions of Minnesota State University, Mankato were the top pick in the 2023 NSIC Preseason Baseball Coaches’ Poll. The Mavericks amassed 188 points after receiving eight first place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team). Augustana was second with 185 points and five first place votes. St. Cloud State was picked third with 174 points and the final two first place votes. The University of Mary and Minot State tied for fourth with 128 points. The preseason coaches’ poll is based off each coach ranking each team from 14 to 1 with the top team receiving 14 points, second 13, third 12, etc.The baseball non-conference season gets underway in early February with NSIC play beginning on March 18. The 2023 NSIC Baseball Tournament will take the top eight teams in the final NSIC Standings. At this level it's hard to replace 6 pro signees and a senior class that won more games than any class in school history. With that said, we like what we have. On the mound there is a lot of experience and a few talented new guys, so we hope that will be a strength. Head Coach Tim Huber Drey has steadily improved each year. By the end of last spring we started to see more consistency both defensively and offensively and his talent started to show up. He will be one of the leaders on a team that graduated several. We have laid a solid foundation from last year, but left a lot on the table and are excited to improve upon that this year. His successes are a direct reflection of our team's successes. Every time Will pitches he gives our team an opportunity to win. PAUL With seven position players that started regularly, along with six pitchers that got significant innings, we are excited about the 2023 season. We have added some talented freshmen and transfers to that group and believe the team will compete to earn a spot in the conference tournament. Our guys have worked hard during the fall and are excited about the 2023 season. Head Coach Neil Lerner Nick has been a mainstay in the outfield and middle of the order for his during his first three years and we look for that to continue this year. He is an athletic outfielder who brings both speed and power to our team. He has led our team in many offensive categories the past few years and earned 2nd team all NSIC during his R-Fr year. A hard worker that leads by example, we look for Nick to continue on the success he has had in past years. Head Coach Neil Lerner As a freshman, Korey immediately jumped into the role of weekend starting pitcher for us. He led our team in wins and gave us an excellent chance to win in almost every start he took. Korey is a hard worker that continues to learn and develop. It's an exciting mix of returners and incoming players. We feel like we've increased athleticism position player wise and have a pitching staff full of guys wanting to compete. We look for him to provide impact in the middle of our order and build upon the success that he has had to this point. Last spring Derek took a step forward as a leader in our program, we look for him to continue to grow in this respect this spring. We return the majority of our lineup from a year ago and added some talented players. Our strength will be our starting pitching with all of our starters returning from a year ago. We hope to improve our pitching depth and offense. We feel we have the players to do so. Head Coach Steve Gust Jake (Hjelle) has only started reaching his potential. He is a five-tool player with an elite combination of power and speed. He has a chance to have an outstanding season. He will anchor an improved offensive line-up. Head Coach Steve Gust UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH With a significant offensive core returning, the development of returning pitchers paired with new faces on the pitching staff, we are excited to build off of last year's progress as a team. We graduated some key pieces but believe this year's team will have greater depth. It will be exciting to see our new players contribute throughout the year and begin the process of establishing a new core for the years ahead as well. Head Coach Bob Rients A two sport athlete at UMD (Football), Tim is a well rounded player on both sides of the ball. He has progressed offensively each year while often hitting in the middle of the order. We look for him to be a major factor in the success of this year's team. A 2-time captain whose resiliency impacts our whole program. Head Coach Bob Rients Alex is a dependable pitcher who we have relied on mostly to close out games in the past to go along with his starting SS role. His ability to throw multiple pitches with command in high pressure situations gives our team added confidence when he's on the mound. He is a quiet leader on and off the field and a 2-time captain. We have an accomplished group of returners and a talented group of newcomers that have created depth at all positions. His athletic ability allows him the potential to change the game at the plate, in the field, and on the base paths. He has a tremendous passion and knowledge for the game of baseball with the unique ability to throw his fastball, curveball, and changeup for strikes anytime in the count. We have a nice mix of new and old players that have done a great job of coming together as a team this off season. I am looking forward to see some different guys take on big roles for our program on the field. I think our upperclassman leadership has be outstanding and has set high expectations for our program. Our players have created a great culture for our program and I can not wait to see them preform this season. Malone is a great teammate he really enjoys the game of baseball and helps our team create a fun environment to be apart of each day. Head Coach Sam Boisner Dominick is in his 6th season with our baseball program. He has been a staple for our program on the mound for a long time. Parkhurst is a great competitor which is a quality that spread to the entire time when he is on the mound. He does a great job of leading by example both on the field and in the class room. We are thankful to have Dominick back for another season, his experience and ability to pitch in big games will be very important to our group. Head Coach Sam Boisner NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY This group returns a large number of players who understand what it takes to compete and be successful in the NSIC. They have worked really hard to put themselves in positions to have success and help the team win baseball games. We look forward to getting on the field with this group! Head Coach Dean Berry Karson has worked extremely hard to put himself in a position to have a lot of success this season. He has done everything that has been asked of him and has emerged as a leader heading into this year. He will be a mainstay in our lineup and a player we can count on all year long. Max is another guy that is a great leader for our team and we look forward to seeing what he can put together this year. Head Coach Dean Berry UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS We lost some key players from last year's team, but I am very excited about our younger guys getting an opportunity to step in and contribute. We have more depth on the mound this year than in year's past which should help our bullpen a great deal. After making back-to-back postseason appearances the past two years, my guys are eager to get back in the conference tournament and try to win some ballgames. Head Coach Grant Hieb Noah is great competitor that brings a consistent approach to the game. He's developed into one of our leaders with his great work ethic and attitude. I'm excited to watch him build on his solid freshman campaign. Head Coach Grant Hieb Caleb's one of the leaders on our pitching staff and sets the tone with his hard work. He emerged last spring as our top starting pitcher and I'm excited to see him lead our staff again this year. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY We’ve been lacking depth in our lineup the last few years and we feel very confident with bringing in a great recruiting class with some Division I and Junior College Transfers.  Our starting pitching rotation should be a strength of ours with a few questions in our bullpen. Head Coach Pat Dolan UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY UIU Baseball is older with 15-16 seniors alongside some talented freshmen and junior college transfers who will serve an immediate impact in the field and on the mound. We have a good balance amongst young and old and the team is healthy at this point in our season. If we can continue to control what we can control and play solid team baseball with executing the fundamentals, we will have a chance to be successful. He is looking forward to stepping up as a leader on a young Wayne team. Head Coach Alex Koch Corbin is a transfer from Western NE junior college. From the moment he stepped onto campus he has helped our program from a leadership standpoint. We look for him to be a rock for us in our weekend rotation. Head Coach Alex Koch WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY We have a team of extremely high character that has a desire to be successful. A great combination of experience and youth will give us an opportunity to be extremely competitive. A new coaching staff has opportunity to build on the success Coach Poock has had at Winona State University. Head Coach Seth Wing Derek is a three-year starter and all-conference player. He has high energy and leads by example. He is extremely respected in our program and a true asset to our coaching staff along with the pitching staff. He communicates well and does everything anyone would ever ask of him as a player and teammate. Head Coach Seth Wing Bailey is extremely dependable pitcher who has the most conference innings returning on our staff. He is a team first player and will do anything to help us succeed.
