BURNSVILLE, Minn. - For the fourth consecutive season, Augustana University was chosen as the favorite in the NSIC Preseason Softball Coaches’ Poll. Minnesota State was second with 208 points and three first place votes while St. Cloud State and Winona State tied for third with 187 points (with SCSU picking up three first place votes).

The preseason coaches’ poll is based off each coach ranking each team from 15 to 1 with the top team receiving 15 points, second 14, third 13, etc.

The 2023 NSIC Softball season gets underway with non-conference play in February, while the 30-game NSIC schedule is set to begin on Tuesday, March 28.

The 2023 NSIC Softball Tournament will expand to four days of competition and consist of the top ten teams in the NSIC final standings competing in a double elimination format on May 3-6 at the RYFSA Complex in Rochester, Minnesota.

COACHES' QUOTES & PLAYERS/PITCHERS TO WATCH

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY

We are excited for the upcoming season. Augustana will have a little different look after graduating several players who were four/five year starters and had a lot of success both individually and team wise for the last five years. Although we graduated lots of players we still return two All-Americans and several starters. This team has been working extremely hard, are creating their own identity and are eager to uphold the standards of Augustana Softball. They are also excited to play at the new Bowden Field.
Head Coach Gretta Melsted
Torri has had a great career at Augustana, having been a starter her entire career. She's been an integral part of our program's success over the years. She has incredible hand/eye coordination and is an elite hitter. Torri is an athlete who quietly does her job and does it at a very high level. Outside of softball she is majoring in Sports Management and will continue her love of athletics in her career. Torri is easy to coach as she is one of the most 'go with the flow' athletes, I've ever had.
Head Coach Gretta Melsted
Lexi comes to Augustana from DMACC after having a great career for a program that has seen a lot of success. She is an experienced pitcher who will step in and provide lots of leadership to a young staff. Her work ethic is truly amazing and she will be our work horse this season.
Head Coach Gretta Melsted

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY

Our team returns the core of our roster, and we added some great depth to the roster this off season. This off season they have worked harder and pushed each other harder than they ever have before. The vision we have here is to clear a path for our athletes to pursue their greatest potential and be a part of something bigger than themselves, whether that’s in the classroom, community, or on the field. We have big goals as a team, and we are excited to get the season started.
Head Coach Jordan Petersen
Mariah is a dynamic player both offensively and defensively and has been a vital part of our program since her arrival. She came in as a freshman last year and hit the ground running with a strong year setting the base for even better things in the future. She has worked hard in the off season and is setting herself up for a big year.
Head Coach Jordan Petersen
Stella is one of those pitchers that everyone wants to play behind. She celebrates the team’s success more than her own and continues to push the team in the right direction. As a student athlete, Stella is a competitor with a tireless work ethic who has become a role model for our program. She has the confidence and ability to lead this team in a new direction.
Head Coach Jordan Petersen

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

We are a veteran team that brings back a lot of experience, we hope this will help springboard us as we begin our season in early February and carry us through the grind of the NSIC conference season. We'll have some tough competition for playing time which should lead to some quality depth coming from the bench.
Head Coach Bob Bartel
Clara has been a 3 year starter and leadoff hitter for us, she has tremendous energy that radiates to her teammates and coaching staff. She is constantly working to improve her game and is the type of player you absolutely love having on your team. We look for Clara to once again control the outfield and lead our offense from the leadoff spot.
Head Coach Bob Bartel
Bryanna took over the role of being our go to pitcher last spring while leading our team in innings pitched. We look for her to once again have that role this coming spring. Bryanna has improved every year since she's arrived and is looking to become one of the top pitchers in the NSIC.
Head Coach Bob Bartel

UNIVERSITY OF MARY

We are excited to see the UMary Marauders compete this season. Fall and winter training has shown huge growth in returners and showcased the skill of our newcomers. UMary softball has underperformed in ways leading to be underestimated in the past. We plan to show our potential this season; we are coming for our competitors each game we step on the field.
Head Coach Dre Frantz
Erin was a consistent asset for our program last year and will be again this year. She is a weapon from the left side of the plate and makes the plays in the field. Murphy has put in the work in the off-season to be exceptional for us this spring. She is a leader through her actions both on and off the field. Erin is present every day in anything she does: training, supports her team, Marauder community and does great work academically. Her role on the field accompanied by her efforts in the classroom attest to her future accomplishments for the upcoming season and beyond.
Head Coach Dre Frantz
Emari is a workhorse for our pitching staff. She has a variety of pitches that find the zone. Emari is a competitor that expects the best from herself and teammates. E's desire to be a nurse in her community is a direct reflection of the caring personality she has and how she treats her team, community and peers.
Head Coach Dre Frantz

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

The most exciting thing about this year's team is the influx of new student-athletes paired with our returners who all got valuable experience for us last year. We have a lot more depth this year which also helps through a 56 game season. This team has big goals and have worked hard throughout the fall and winter to position us to achieve those goals.
Head Coach Nick Weinmeister
Dana is a consistent player that cares more about team success than individual success. She is a quiet lead by example type of player that brings it every day regardless of what the practice plan brings. She is a model student-athlete who cares about being successful in both athletics and academics. She brings out the best in those around her and will undoubtedly be a big part of our team this season.
Head Coach Nick Weinmeister
Thayda got her first NSIC action last year after transferring in and took on all challenges thrown her way. She enjoys the pressure that comes with being a starting pitcher in this league and relishes the opportunity to play top competition. Thayda is a hard working student-athlete who cares about her team and wants to do everything she can to bring this program success.
Head Coach Nick Weinmeister

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

Very proud of this group for embracing our team values - it's led to a memorable fall together full of good energy and we're excited to keep that rolling into the spring. We have exceptional talent on this team and our players have a contagious blue-collar work ethic to be great. That championship hunger is present while we focus on the smaller steps it takes to accomplish those goals. We believe one of our strengths this season will be our mental performance and we're excited to help our players utilize those skills to reach their greatest potential.
Head Coach Lynn Anderson
On the field, Sid is driven to compete and thrives in pressure moments. She brings power on offense and consistency behind the plate. The thing that amazes me the most with Sid is how she's able to balance her academics and athletics so well. She's an Integrated Elementary Special Education major that has had to balance hundreds of student teaching hours with her softball commitments, even amid spring semesters with game changes due to uncontrollable weather. And through all that, she still excels in both by garnering All-Academic honors and Second-Team All-NSIC last year.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO

I think we are most excited about the number of returners back from our post season run last year. A lot of our players have been battle tested and our new additions give us depth all around. This team's ability to think big picture and understand the journey of a tough schedule will help them mentally & physically compete day in and day out.
Head Coach Lori Meyer
Sydney has been a starter behind the dish or in the DP roll the past three years. Her ability to lead our defense and give our pitching staff the confidence they need to be successful is priceless. She has the engine to go yard and the legs to swipe bases. Sydney continues to retool herself each year to make a bigger impact for our team.
Head Coach Lori Meyer
McKayla has had significant innings for us and will take on much more this year. She has the type of bulldog mentality you want in the circle when the games on the line. Her ability to be coachable and make in game adjustments sets her apart. McKayla's sheer grittiness will be her main strength this season.
Head Coach Lori Meyer

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD

We are very excited about 2023 Dragon softball team and the potential opportunities we have in front of us. We are deeper at many positions than we have been in the past and have much higher starting points in talent from our incoming players.
Head Coach Mike Armitage
2023_MSUM_Softball_PPTW
Azalya is a wonderful young player that brings many things to the table. She can hit, pitch, and play defense all at a high level. Azalya is very confident and demanding of herself. She is a good example for what we want in our Dragon softball players to be now and in the future.
Head Coach Mike Armitage
Reece has grown to be a dependable pitcher for us. She has plenty of innings behind her and we are looking for her to build on that experience to provide some leadership for our younger players.
Head Coach Mike Armitage

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

Coming in this year, our staff made quite a few changes within the program that the team has adapted very well too. What excites us the most is seeing the team shift their mindsets and wanting to finish what was left undone last year. They have collectively worked hard, and Minot State Softball is here to make a statement.
Head Coach Bailey Gaspar
Brookly Morrison, or B-MO for short, is an all-around great student athlete. As a nursing major she epitomizes the words Student-Athlete, she works hard in the classroom and hard on the field. She is a great team leader and sets the tone for her fellow teammates.
Head Coach Bailey Gaspar
Coming in as true freshman, Wisconsin native, Calley Olson is a going to be force to be reckoned with. Her composure on the mound and her ability to command the field is something that comes naturally to her. Her actions on and off the field speak volumes to the type of Student-Athlete she is.
Head Coach Bailey Gaspar

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

This year's team brings an exciting personality and perspective to our program! We have a mix of returners, freshman, and transfers that have built their foundation during the fall on and off the field. This team has embraced the hard, the expectations, and the goals they have set for themselves. There is more ownership and in that brings excitement for this year's team and the 2023 season!
Head Coach Ashley Schilling
Liv is a great leader for our team. She brings a contagious energy to practices and game days. Liv has power and speed to her offense, and I think that makes her a fun player to watch compete. Defensively, she assists in locking down the left side of the field and gives our pitchers confidence that she has their back. Most importantly, she is a great teammate and human that we are lucky to have as a Wolf.
Head Coach Ashley Schilling
Lexi is a competitor. She steps on the mound ready to go against the best! What I think teams will see in Lexi is her resiliency and trust she has in her defense behind her. She is an all-around great person that we are excited to have join our team this year from Iowa Lakes Community College.
Head Coach Ashley Schilling

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS

Every year we get the opportunity to grow, change, love and compete with our family – and as is the same with every year, I couldn’t be more excited to see what this group of young ladies can accomplish. We have spent a lot of time working on being the best versions of ourselves that we can be: on being better teammates while excelling as a human, student, and athlete! This group cares for each other, has a common goal, and works their tails off when given the opportunities. Thrilled to get things rolling in just over a month!
Head Coach Shannon Pivovar
Reese is a true student of the game and has continued to work hard as a teammate to be the best she can be. Reese consistently challenges and improves the standard of our program, building up those around her to be better in the classroom and on the field. She is a phenomenal athlete behind the dish helping our whole staff work together so we can be the best we can be.
Head Coach Shannon Pivovar
Kait is the type of leader that every program strives to have in their family. She works hard by example in the weight room, classroom, and on the field, constantly pushing herself to the limits while bringing her teammates with her. Kait believes in the direction our family is going and carries it out in her daily life. She is going to be an absolute life changer for everyone she meets and we are lucky she is ours!
Head Coach Shannon Pivovar

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

We are very excited to see this team compete this spring. They have consistently brought great energy and the will to get better each day. Their ability to stay hungry and continue to grow has been fun to watch.
Head Coach Bailey Bouman
Abby gained great experience last season of how tough NSIC play is. She is a relentless worker who is also excellent in the classroom with a very high softball IQ.
Head Coach Bailey Bouman
Shelby's experience of being a 5th year senior and understanding how great of competition the NSIC has continually helped her grow her game each season. She provides great leadership on the mound and is also an excellent student.
Head Coach Bailey Bouman

ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY

We are looking forward to this upcoming season. We have graduated a lot of experience and leadership but that has opened the door for new opportunities and new players to step up in these roles. This group has put in the time and work necessary to set themselves up for success. We look forward to the opportunity to compete in this amazing conference.
Head Coach Mitchell Roberts
Sydney returns as one of the nation's leading power hitters finishing 8th in the country last year in home runs. Sydney is an incredible athlete and approaches the game the right way. She is driven and has the right attitude on and off the field. We are excited to see how she finishes her career.
Head Coach Mitchell Roberts
We look forward to Lauren to be a big contributor to our team this spring. Lauren has the movement, ability to locate, and off speed to create a lot of weak contact. Having one more year of experience under her belt I think she is ready to have a big year for St. Cloud State.
Head Coach Mitchell Roberts

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY

For the third year in a row, the Peacocks have had to learn a new system and start over with a new coaching staff. The growth that they have shown in four short months so far has been tremendous, and they are approaching every day with a chip on their shoulder. I am most excited about our diverse and deep pitching staff, with two returners and two new faces. All of them can throw it well and complement each other. If you've got good pitching, then the sky's the limit.
Head Coach Laura North
Ari has really turned a corner this offseason and showing a ton of confidence. Her physical ability has always been there, but with her experience last season, and her commitment this fall and winter, she is proving to be a standout student-athlete for the Peacocks. Ari will command our outfield and represents our aggressive offensive approach well.
Head Coach Laura North
Delaney is going to be an exciting pitcher to follow this season. Her long and lean stature, and ability to use unorthodox pitches has created some excitement amongst our pitching staff. Delaney's experience as an ACE in the ICCAC, brings valuable experience in both competition and leadership. I am excited about what Delaney is going to bring to our pitching staff this coming season.
Head Coach Laura North

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

I am incredibly proud of this team’s commitment to change. They have bought in to a new process and have given forth nothing but positive attitude and effort. Lead by a group of seniors that fight tooth and nail for what and who they believe in, a foundation was set by this group. It was hard fought and at times uncomfortable, but it sparked in them a passion and a vision. Knowing where they are going and having the will to grind to get there, has given this program a new trajectory. It will be exciting to watch this team, over the course of the 2023 season, continue to set that course.
Head Coach Christy Warnock
Very few coaches are lucky enough to have an athlete who just gets it. Kim is that athlete. She’s skilled, hard-working, coachable, competitive, and wildly intelligent. But it is her ability to lead and teach that sets her apart. Though she is more than willing to step in and get the job done herself, she truly values and pursues the success of the entire unit. That’s the embodiment of a true leader. Kim has had great success in the previous four years, but it is simply a fact that the best she can give is yet to come.
Head Coach Christy Warnock
Grace has made tremendous progress in the offseason. She has taken to adjustments incredibly well and seems to only get better as time goes on. Watching her establish herself as a playmaker on this team and see her confidence grow has been an exciting development. The athleticism she offers on the mound, as well as in the box, is a rarity and we’re looking forward to seeing those abilities shine this year.
Head Coach Christy Warnock

WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY

I am excited about this year's team. They are an amazing group of student/athletes who work hard and uphold the standards and culture of Winona State Softball. They are an incredibly coachable group and they value the game and each other both on and off the field.
Head Coach Greg Jones
Abbie is one of the hardest workers we have had at Winona State. She has a true passion for the game. Abbie can help our team in multiple ways with her bat, her defense, and her pitching. She is a steadying force for us that brings maturity, drive, and pure love of the game that has a positive influence on entire team.
Head Coach Greg Jones
Abby continues to grow and develop as a leader of our pitching staff. We are excited for her experience and leadership to help encourage the advancement of the rest of our staff. Abby gained valuable experience last year, and was a tremendous competitor in the circle throughout the season.
