MINNESOTA STATE CLAIMS TOP SPOT IN NSIC WOMEN'S INDOOR PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Fresh off its fourth straight NSIC Indoor Championship last year, Minnesota State was picked to win the NSIC in the preseason women's indoor track & field coaches' poll. The Mavericks received 12 first place votes and tallied 165 points, ranking them ahead of Augustana, which was second with 151 points and A first place vote. Winona State was third with 137 points while the University of Mary was fourth with 136 points and the final first place vote.  

Winona State's Lindsay Cunningham (track) and Minnesota State's Makayla Jackson (field) were voted by the coaches as the preseason athletes of the year. 

Cunningham is the defending NCAA Division II National Champion in the indoor 5000m, the outdoor 5000m & 10000m and fresh off a 2023 Cross Country title.  Cunningham hold the NSIC record in the 5000m (15:48.66) ran in 2023. 

Jackson, a five-time National Champion, won the long jump at the 2023 NSIC Indoor Championships with an NSIC record leap of 20-04.50 (6.21m). Jackson placed second in the nation in the long jump with a mark of 20-01.50 (6.13m) while also taking home the National Championship in the 60m dash for the second year in a row.  

The 2023-24 NSIC Indoor Track & Field season gets underway this weekend with the regular season culminating on Friday-Saturday, February 23-24 at the NSIC Championship held at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minnesota, hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato.  The entire NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship will air live on the NSIC Network; a day pass can be purchased for $10, while full access to both days of competition is available for $15.00.

Lindsay has set herself apart as one of the all-time great distance runners in the NSIC; even the NCAA Division II. She continues to set the standard of work ethic, attitude and leadership on this team. After winning NCAA Championships last season in the indoor 5000m, outdoor 5000m and 10000m, she has continued to impress this fall, winning her third straight NSIC Cross Country Championship; the first female to ever do so.

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY - 2nd

Our women's team has a ton of talent and a number of NCAA National qualifiers, which should help our team success at bigger meets. Our balance is also something that we are excited about. It should be a fun and exciting year.

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY - 10th

This squad is ready to take on any challenge that is put in front of them! I truly believe this team can reach any goal they set for themselves. We have the heart and dedication to really do some special things this season.

Mary is coming off a tremendous cross-country season. Last year's indoor season ended with a fourth place finish in the 3000m and help set the school record in the DMR. Mary's is set up to finish out her career at BSU with a bang.

Tierra returns for her senior year after a junior season of consistent improvement in the shot put, concluding her indoor season ranked 4th in the NSIC and 6th in the Central Region and her outdoor season ranked 2nd in the NSIC and 5th in the Central Region.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL - 9th

Most of the returners on this year's roster are in the throws and distance events, which should provide some support and stability with the steady improvement from these groups since last spring. There were a large number of upperclassmen who graduated from the sprint group, so it will be exciting to see who is ready to step in and fill roles on our relays.

The 5th-year senior has been participating in fall track (rather than cross country) this year for the first time in her career, and we are excited about some of her fall testing results that were recently completed. Jaid leads with her voice and actions which is important for the young athletes on the roster this year.

Cadence is a first-year jumper who joins the team after a decorated high school career that saw her finish on the podium in three events at the MSHSL Class A state meet last spring. She has a ton of bounce and enough speed to be a factor in the NSIC jumps as a true freshman.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY - 4th

What excites me about this year's team is the balance of the group and how we can spread across every event to score and have a chance at national success with the women's team.

Sakena started to figure out her potential in the sprints last season and is working to keep that trend progressing to new bests and a chance to make a mark at nationals.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH - 6th

Our women have continued to build depth in the long sprints and middle distances during the off season, and will be returning a lot of conference experience from last year with one of the deepest conference rosters in the 2023 season. The added potential for more points in the field events with help round our roster this indoor season.

Savannah enters this season as the 3rd place conference finisher in the 800M and a main contributor for our 4x4. Savannah also posted the 6th fastest mark in the 600M during the 2023 season. Savannah's early career success in the middle distances set her up well for a breakout season at the conference and national level.

Jacqi had a breakout season last year in her first attempt at a multi event athlete, finishing 5th in the outdoor heptathlon. Jacqi is a great leader for our program and her hard work sets the tone for our women's program. With a year of pent/hep experience under her belt, she is poised to compete for some of the top marks during the 2024 season.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO - 1st

With an impressive streak over the past 3 seasons, the women of Minnesota State will look to have their best team to date with some key additions and top returners back. a well-rounded team will shoot to defend their indoor and outdoor NSIC team titles, while fighting for a national championship as a team.

Last season Denisha accounted for seven individual/relay conference titles, seven All-American honors and five NSIC conference records between the indoor and outdoor season. She was a 2x National Champion and the outdoor national athlete of the year. She was the national top point scorer at both the indoor and outdoor NSIC and NCAA Championships and is a 25x All-American with 5 individual national titles. She is top 5 all-time in D2 in the 60m, 60mh, indoor 200m and top 10 all-time D2 in the 100h and 100m.

Our women's team is having a great Fall. I'm excited for them to open the indoor season and grow through the indoor championships.

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY - 14th

The environment excites me most about the 2023-24 track and field team. With all the new faces, and freshman Minot State has brought in. The track and field team has brought a no fear attitude to proceedings. It's like the old saying goes 'How can you fear, what you don't know'. What Minot State University knows is that they have a group of student athletes who are enjoying life in Minot, North Dakota. 'Why not Minot!'

Summer has grown tremendously over the past year. As a sophomore on the team, Summer is one of the leaders academically with a 3.6 GPA, but also athletically with her speed, power and work ethic. She will be ready to lead the sprints for Minot State University on the women's side.

Catherine's commitment and dedication to the sport thus far should earn her a surprise finish in the NSIC Indoor Championships. She has worked diligently at fine tuning her weaknesses in the long and triple jump. She is continuously improving and aims to master the events soon enough. She will have a breakout season and should be one to watch.

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY - 8th

We have an amazing veteran group of gals this upcoming season, along with a talented group of freshmen added to the mix. The team is well-rounded across the board on many events. These ladies have worked extremely hard this fall and are excited to kick off the indoor season.

Renea is coming off All-American Honors from the outdoor season in the 400 hurdles. She is going to pose a threat in several events this upcoming season. She works extremely hard and is highly motivated to continue where she left off. We are excited to see what she can do this upcoming indoor season.

Kenzee is coming off a great outdoor season where she set national qualifying marks in the vault and also received runner-up honors at the NSIC Championships. Not only does she excel on the track, but she is an amazing student. We are excited to see her hit big heights this indoor season.

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS - 5th

We are looking for a strong Indoor Season for our USF athletes. Many place winners from the NSIC Indoor Championships return. Add another year of work and dedication, USF women will have a well-balanced team that will score points in more events than in the past. We look forward to our Indoor Season and reaching higher heights in the team standings from last year!

2023 Indoor Season was a spectacular season for Khot. She placed in three events at the NSIC Indoor Championships, earning All-Conference Honors in two events and placing in another. Khot led off the DMR to third place setting a New School Record and NCAA Provisional Mark. She also finished second in the 3000m setting a second School Record and NCAA Provisional Mark. She topped off the weekend by placing 5th in the Mile with an NCAA Provisional Mark. She also has the #3 best time at USF in the 1000m. She is a very dedicated runner and hard worker. Khot is a leader by example and has her goals set high!

Emily crushed her Indoor Season in 2023. She placed 2nd in the Pentathlon with a New School Record to earn All-Conference Honors. Emily also placed fourth in the High Jump and 7th in the 60m Hurdles. She earned Second Team All-American Honors at the D2 Indoor Championships placing 12th. Emily also placed 13th in the High Jump at the Indoor D2 Championships. Besides her School Record in the Pentathlon, she has the #2 Honor Roll at USF in the High Jump and #3 Honor Roll at USF in the 60m Hurdles. She is coming off a redshirt outdoor season and is hungry to compete after lots of training over the summer and fall. You won't find a harder work more dedicated athlete. She has her goals set high.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

Maturity and growth are beginning to show as we continue to break school records. We are hoping for more of the same as the season develops.

After placing fifth in the 600 M at the NSIC Indoor Championships last season, Sierra is hoping to continue the climb. She has her eyes set on adding to the list of school records that she owns while moving up in the NSIC standings.

During Shealyn's sophomore campaign she continued to break the school record in the pole vault. She finished 5th in the NSIC indoors and 4th in the NSIC outdoors. We are excited to see what she does this year.

ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY - 11th

The Huskies have a fresh cohort of newcomers added to the pack that make up the majority, and returners that are looking to elevate. Combined, I am looking forward to a year of competitiveness and growth.

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE - 7th

We have some big shoes to fill with the graduation of National Champion - Brooklynn Chipps and All-American McKenzie Scheil, so we are looking at trying to pick up points in other areas this year. Everyone has been working hard this fall, and we have some good young talent that we hope can make the jump to competing for points in the NSIC.

Kelsey made a big improvement last year in her competitiveness and was able to place 2nd in the 1000 at the NSIC Championships. I think she is even more motivated and focused this year to have a great track season. She does a great job pushing herself and knows what it takes to compete with the best.

Anna had a great freshman year last year and surprised some people with getting an NCAA provo mark and placing 6th in the NSIC pentathlon. She has a better knowledge base of her events now and is using that to help push her to new personal best marks in all of her events. I am excited to see what she can do as a sophomore this year!
