Eight Records Fall on Day 1 of 2023 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships

MANKATO, Minn. – Six men’s and five women’s events are complete following day one of the 2022-23 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Myers Field House in Mankato, Minnesota. Eight records fell on day one, six on the women’s side and two for the men.  

The championship continues Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. with pentathlon events while field events will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by track finals at 1:30 p.m.

After six men’s events the 11-time defending champions of Minnesota State lead with 74 points.  Wayne State is second with 28 points while Northern State  is third with 26 points. 

After five women’s events No. 1 Minnesota State leads with 68.5 points. Augustana is second with 27 while Wayne State is third with 18 points. 

The first record fell in the first track event of the day when the Augustana DMR team of Mia Salas, Ella Heinitz, Caroline Sudbeck,  and PJ English ran 11:43.93 to win the event.  (Previous Record: Augustana – 2020 – 11:51.62).

It didn’t take long for the next record to fall as the MSU Moorhead DMR team of Adnew Stueven, Kendrick Major, Braxton Bruer and Jared Gregoire ran 9:55.26 to earn 10 points. (Previous Record: Augustana – 2021 – 10:00.30).

The next three records broken were by the previous record holders from last year’s championship. In the prelims of the 60m hurdles Minnesota State’s Denisha Cartwright ran 8.11 besting her previous record of 8.23. In the prelims of the 400m dash Winona State’s Shereen Vallabouy ran 54.79 besting her time of 54.94. MSU’s Makalya Jackson won the long jump with a leap of 20-04.5 (6.21m), improving on her mark of 19-9.75 (6.04m). 

The next record of the day came in the 60m prelims when Cartwright ran a NCAA Division II best time of 7.23 (Previous Record: Mckayla Jackson, Minnesota State; 7.32 – 2022). 

The final men’s record of the day was set by Minnesota State’s James Gilbert in the long jump.  He leapt 25-10.00 (7.87m). (Previous Record: Ed Stuart, Mankato State: 24-10.75 (7.59m) - 1981).

The final record of the day was set by Winona State’s Lindsay Cunningham in the 5000m run as she ran the second fastest time in NCAA Division II this season at 15:48.66. (Previous Record: Alexis Zeis, University of Mary: 16:27.92 – 2017).
