Head Coach Mike Schmidt 2023 NSIC COACHES' QUOTES/PLAYERS TO WATCH AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY With ten offensive starters back including four from the offensive line and our quarterback along with great depth at running back and wide receiver, our offense should compete well and have success this fall. Though we graduated three all-conference defensive players, I believe the core of players that return along with the depth we have established should create an aggressive defensive unit that will compete against the best offenses in the league. The returning players have competed in the playoffs and know what it takes to compete in big games. Head Coach Jerry Olszewski Jarod was one of the most productive backs in the NSIC the last couple of years before a season ending injury early last season. He is one of the most competitive players that I have coached and matches his speed and athletic ability with a passion for the game. I believe he will be one of the best running backs in the nation this season. Head Coach Jerry Olszewski Peyton was the NSIC newcomer of the year in 2021 and a two-time all-conference safety. Peyton has a great understanding of the game and is as athletic as any defensive back I have seen in the league in 10 years, and that is a great group of players. He was voted as a team captain by his teammates this summer as a junior because of his leadership and ability. Head Coach Jerry Olszewski BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY What excites me most about this team is the amount of returners we have coming back that have found a way to win conference championships the past two years and advance in the NCAA Playoffs as well. We will have to find a way to replace the productivity Brendan Beaulieu at WR along with Zollie Kaplan and Colby Wadsworth at DE but are excited about the guys coming up in the program. Head Coach Brent Bolte Brandon has been one of the top quarterbacks in the league the past couple of years. He has rebounded from some major setbacks when he was younger and has become one of the best that has played the position in our programs history. Head Coach Brent Bolte Max is a tremendous athlete that can go out and play man on guys on the perimeter and is a violent fitter in the box. Max plays the game with 100% effort and violence on every snap, from practice to games you know what you're going to get out of this young man. Max leads by example and has since he has been on campus. Head Coach Brent Bolte CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL There is a lot of motivation within the CSP football program after a couple challenging years. We add 12 transfers to some young starters that return from last season. We return seven starters on defense and eight on offense, in addition to all specialists returning. We believe this combination will make a positive impact on the 2023 season. Head Coach Shannon Currier Jaylin is a dynamic running back who is a threat as a runner and pass receiver. He comes off a sophomore season where he earned NSIC All Conference Second Team honors. Jaylin is a team player and is willing to sacrifice a lot for his teammates. Head Coach Shannon Currier Cyrus has taken leaps as a leader in our program. He is one of the top vocal leaders of our defense and is a rangy, athletic and explosive defensive back. He is coming off a strong sophomore campaign. Head Coach Shannon Currier UNIVERSITY OF MARY The team lost a lot of production from last year but we are excited to see who steps in those roles. There will be a lot of young guys getting action and it will be fun to watch them grow into those roles. It's been a unique offseason around here, but we are excited to get on the field with the team and watch them compete. Head Coach Shann Schillinger Drake is a guy that has played a lot of football in this league and he was a team captain last year. I think Grant has a chance to have a good year and I'm really excited or him. Head Coach Shann Schillinger UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH I look forward to seeing this team become closer both on and off the field in 2023. We have depth in some places that will allow for lots of competition through the season. Our 5 captains have lead us this off season and will help bring us together as a team through fall camp. Head Coach Curt Wiese Tre' returns off of an all conference junior year to captain our offense and anchor the Bulldogs at center. He is an agile lineman that will lead by example and play up front. Head Coach Curt Wiese Marcus returns off a junior all conference season to lead our defense and secondary with an aggressive style of play. He will be a captain for the Bulldogs on defense. Head Coach Curt Wiese MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO As a team we finished the 2022 season strong and we are looking forward to the 2023 season. We have a strong contingent of players returning on Offense, Defense and on Special Teams. The maturity and experience of the 2023 squad will need to carry us through a very difficult schedule where we are repeating competition with 5 teams at the same site location as last year. The climb to the top is our goal and we will need to be able to compete on a daily basis in order to be elite. Head Coach Todd Hoffner Hayden has improved annually since his Freshman year and we are expecting that development to continue. He has taken the bull by the horns with his work ethic and leadership style. A dual threat QB who has a strong arm and the ability to make plays in space. We are looking forward to Hayden guiding our offense to the next chapter of performance. Head Coach Todd Hoffner Trey has grown into a strong leader since his arrival in the Spring of 2022. He leads with his voice and performance. Trey is a very focused football player who can get in and out of his breaks with quickness. He has grown into an excellent leader for our defensive unit. He is poised to have a great senior year. Head Coach Steve Laqua MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY The young men in our program are excited to compete and move our program forward within the NSIC. We have an energized group with a fresh start, new staff, a lot of new faces, and some new ways of doing business. His is a big, physical back who will be a key component in the Beavers’ multiple spread-option system. Head Coach Ian Shields Kynlen is a returning All-Conference and All-American player. He has gained a lot of attention from NFL/CFL scouts. He is a long, athletic cornerback with tremendous ball skills and a high ceiling. Head Coach Ian Shields NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY Our team has had an incredible offseason, filled with hard work and great focus. We're thrilled with the progress our players have made, and we're also excited about the fantastic additions we've made to our roster. The NSIC is filled with great teams and I have full confidence that our team is ready to compete at the highest level every week. I am eager to watch this exceptional group play every Saturday this Fall. Head Coach Mike Schmidt Dewaylon's outstanding performance in 2021 found him in the top 10 nationally for receiving touchdowns and yards. He's ready for an impressive season in 2023. Beyond his exceptional skillset, Dewaylon's character shines through, making him a remarkable individual on and off the field. His journey of persistence serves as an inspiring tale that deserves to be heard. We are immensely proud of Ian's impact at Northern State. Head Coach Mike Schmidt UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS I am really looking forward to seeing the 2023 Cougars take the field this fall. I have been impressed by their desire to work and improve over the offseason. What has maybe been even more impressive is their attitude and willingness to buy into not only new schemes but the vision our staff has for the program as we move forward. I believe we have a squad that will be process oriented and compete week in and week out. Head Coach Jim Glogowski Adam is an extremely smart football player. He is a competitor who has earned the respect of his teammates. A leader in every sense of the word, he is one of our most experienced players returning on the offense this fall. We expect him to play a big part in our team's growth and development over the course of the season. Head Coach Jim Glogowski Amaurii is our most decorated returning player we have on this year's squad. He is a big physical presence in the middle of the defense and I look for him to pick up where he left off last season. He has all the tools to be the type of player we need to defend the physical run games we will see week in and week out in the Northern Sun. Head Coach Jim Glogowski SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY We are still a young football team that got off to a good start in the 2022 season but lacked the depth and experience to sustain a full NSIC schedule. We look forward to the return of a few players that we lost due to injury a year ago as we strive to compete in working to be better in the 2023 season. Head Coach Scott Underwood Pete has been a workhorse and leader in our program on and off the field with his efforts to improve himself and our team each season. The high level of training that Pete holds himself to has only rubbed off on his teammates to improve our offensive production in setting a high standard. We look forward to Pete remaining healthy for a productive 2023 season. Head Coach Scott Underwood Thomas is a visible and vocal leader in our program. He puts in a tremendous amount of time in the study of film and training to improve his game and help direct our defense on the field. He is a physical linebacker with strong instincts which makes him like having another coach on the field. Head Coach Scott Underwood WAYNE STATE COLLEGE We have quite a few guys returning on both sides of the ball that have played in a lot of big games for us over the past couple of years. Our leadership on our team continues to grow and our older players have done a great job teaching the younger players what playing for the Paw is all about. Head Coach Logan Masters Nick has taken a big step up this off season in his leadership role in our program. Nick is one of the most competitive young men I have ever been around. He wants to win at everything he does. Take the competitiveness and add in Nick's physical and mental toughness and you get a pretty special player. Head Coach Logan Masters Alex has really grown as leader in our football program. He has totally bought into what we are about at Wayne State from the moment he walked on campus. Alex is one of the most intelligent and instinctual players I've been around. He understands the game of football and has a nose for the ball. Head Coach Logan Masters WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY There is a powerful and contagious energy surrounding our football team because we are hungry.
