NEW ORLEANS - With three events run, she won three NSIC Titles, earning Minnesota State senior Denisha Cartwright NCAA Division II Women's Track & Field National Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Cartwright clocked 7.93 in 60 meter hurdles, which broke the NCAA Division II record she previously held with Indira Spence at 8.05. Cartwright shaved off another 0.12 seconds from the all-time best at Myers Field House.
Cartwright also bolstered a 7.23 time in the 60 meter prelims (best in Division II), then won the event finals with the same time. Her 200 meter podium finish of 23.68 also topped the charts. All told, Cartwright's 30 points helped the Mavericks win their fourth consecutive team title at the NSIC Indoor Championships.
"It has been a tremendous privilege watching Denisha progress into one of the best sprinters of all-time in Division II history," said head coach Mike Turgeon. "She has an outstanding work ethic, is an inspirational leader and is an all around good human being. Coach Parno has done an amazing job recruiting a talented runner like Denisha and developing her into the powerhouse athlete she has become."
In a few days time, Cartwright will look to repeat her dream performance from one year ago at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships, where she scored 22 points behind an individual title and two third-place finishes. The odds are ever in her favor as the nation's top 60-meter time belongs to her and the 200-meter gap is about as close as can be. Her 60 meter hurdles is the third fastest in all levels of NCAA competition this season.
This is the fifth time in her career Cartwright has been named the National Athlete of the Week during Indoor Track and Field season and first time this year (Feb. 9, 2021, Dec. 6, 2023, Jan. 24, 2023, Feb. 28, 2023).
