MINNESOTA STATE CLAIMS TOP SPOT IN NSIC WOMEN'S OUTDOOR PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Minnesota State University, Mankato was picked to win the NSIC in the preseason women's outdoor track & field coaches' poll. The Mavericks received all 13 first place votes and tallied 169 points, ranking them ahead of second place University of Mary. The Marauders had  154 points and the other first place vote (coaches cannot vote for their own team). Augustana was third with 144 while Sioux Falls was fourth with 132 points.  Minnesota Duluth rounded out the top five with 123 points. 

Minnesota State's Denisha Cartwright was picked as the preseason track athlete of the year while Concordia-St. Paul's Arika Robinson repeated as the preseason field athlete of the year. Both athletes were selected as outdoor preseason athletes of the year last season. 

The 2024 NSIC outdoor track & field season gets underway this weekend with the regular season culminating on Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11 at the NSIC Championships held on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Denisha is one of the best Division II athletes of all time and it will be fun to watch her complete her collegiate career this outdoor season. She comes off an 2023 outdoor championship where she won a national title in the 100 hurdles and secured All-American honors in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m.

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY (3rd)

Our women's team has many talented and motivated team members and are excited for the outdoor season. Our indoor results showed that we have the talent and ability to have a great team performance. Our balance continues to improve and I am excited to see what this group can do.

Maia is entering her junior outdoor season is a great spot. She is coming off an indoor season where she set lifetime PR's and set the school record in the indoor 400. She was very instrumental in our women winning the conference 4 x 4 title, and her confidence and leadership is at an all-time high. She is ready for big things this outdoor season.

Maria had a breakout season this past indoor and is set up great to have an outstanding outdoor campaign. She has improved steadily each season and she is set up for her best season to date. She is a great team member and rises to the occasion to perform her best.

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY (8th)

This team is tiny but mighty! We have lots of talent on this team and we are really close to having that breakout meet/season! This is a fun team to coach and see what they are capable of doing in competition.

Mary is coming off a great indoor season! She is poised to keep pace with what she has accomplished so far this season and finish strong. Mary has big goals this outdoor season and is putting the work in to see those goals become reality.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL (9th)

The current version of our women's roster is probably the most close and supportive group that I can remember in my time as a head coach here. That helps create a great environment for daily training and practices which carries over into meets where we can really see individuals rallying behind one another when there are high-leverage moments.

Nyadio is coming off a stellar indoor season which saw her podium in the 800m and as a member of the 4x400m relay at the conference championships. She really began to blossom later in the cross country season last fall and we knew she was poised to make a big jump forward on the track. We look for Nyadio to continue with that momentum as we head into the outdoor season.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY (2nd)

Our women's team performed at a high level during the indoors season and championship. I really like the culture they are creating with each other and the amount of people who are improving on a consistent basis.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH (5th)

Heading into outdoor in excited about the depth we have and the opportunity to score points across the board of event groups. We also anticipate adding strength to our conference roster with the addition of outdoor events.

Savannah is coming off a fantastic indoor season where she ran an indoor best in the 800M and finished top 30 in the country. Savannah was also a key element to our DMR finishing with a provisional mark to end the indoor season. We are excited about Savannah's opportunity to put herself in the mix for a national qualifying spot in the 800M this outdoor season, and anticipate she will also be a key contributor to the 4x400M relay.

Jacqi finished in the indoor season in such a high note, capturing provisional marks and personal bests in the pentathlon and shot put. We anticipate Jacqi to have an even stronger presence in the heptathlon and believe her to be one of the most dynamic athletes in the NCIS with her ability to contribute in throws, sprints, and in the heptathlon.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO (1st)

Returning a very talented roster from last season and riding the momentum from the indoor season, this outdoor season sets up to be one of the best in program history.

Denisha is one of the best Division II athletes of all time and it will be fun to watch her complete her collegiate career this outdoor season. She comes off an 2023 outdoor championship where she won a national title in the 100h and secured all-American honors in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m.

Makayla comes off a 2023 outdoor season where she collected All-American honors three times in the 100m, Long Jump and 4x100m relay. She is one of the best long jump/sprint combo athletes in Division II history and we look forward to watching her complete her college career on a high note!

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD (10th)

Our women's team is young and gained valuable experience during the indoor season. I'm excited to see how this experience translates to our outdoor campaign.

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY (12th)

I love how hungry this team is to get better. Even through personal bests and school record performances during the indoor season, I can see they want more. That drive is going to lead to some stellar performances this spring.

Bailey made some huge strides and ran some great performances during the indoor season, including a win in the 600 at the conference championship. Her confidence and racing acumen are great attributes to see in a freshman as well.

Hayleigh has been a do everything athlete for us on and off the track. She battled through injury to get to the point where she could even compete in the pentathlon during the indoor season. Being healthy this spring could lead to some big PRs in her future.

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY (7th)

The women are coming off a 6th place finish this past indoor season. We have a solid veteran squad with some very talented freshmen athletes. We will add some more depth to our throws for the outdoor season with some very talented javelin and discus throwers. We are excited to see what our ladies can do this outdoor season.

Megan has had an amazing senior year so far. She was an All-Conference performer in cross country and she broke the indoor mile this past indoor season. We look forward to see how she finishes out her senior outdoor season.

Cassidy is coming off a great indoor season where she hit a provisional mark in the weight throw at the NSIC meet. She is double threat this outdoor season with the Hammer throw and Javelin throw. She placed in both in the 2023 season. Cass works extremely hard and is also an amazing student as well.

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS (4th)

A good handful of place winners from the NSIC Outdoor and Indoor Championships return. The addition of more field events presents an opportunity for our team to grab more points at the conference meet. We're an upperclassmen heavy team that will look to improve our standing in the conference rankings.

Khot heads into outdoor after building momentum from the most successful women's XC season in school history. Khot finished 5th at NCAA National XC Championships. She continued to build through the indoor season, breaking school records in the mile, 3k, and DMR while also making an appearance at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in the mile.

Olivia is truly an outdoor athlete. Her main event is the javelin throw. Last year at the NCAA Outdoor Championships she had a school record toss that placed her second in the nation. We look forward to seeing Liv grow in her main event.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY (13th)

This is probably the most complete women's team we have had at SMSU. Things are coming together for an exciting outdoor season.

ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY (14th)

I am excited for this group of women to have both individual success and team success. After one indoor season with the team I look forward to refining efforts and techniques towards yielding a competitive and fun filled outdoor season.

Savannah's efforts in the javelin are impressive and fun to watch. Preparation this indoor season for this event specifically has been the motivation. Savannah is excited to string together all the nuggets she has gained for her first outdoor collegiate season in javelin.

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE (11th)

The women's team has some talented performers in several areas. We have quite a bit of upperclassmen leadership that should be able to help guide the team to a higher finish than what we had during the indoor season. The potential is there, time will tell if they can make it happen!

Maya had a great indoor season, setting new personal best marks in both the 60 meter and 200 meter dash events. I think she has really developed the confidence and mindset, as well as they physical abilities that is needed to compete at a very high level. It will be exciting to see what she can do during this outdoor season.

Reilly found her groove last year in the discus and had a good season by making it to her first NCAA National Championship Meet. She will be looking to improve on her best marks in both the discus and the hammer throw. Reilly has the potential to contribute a lot of points to the team at the NSIC Championship Meet.

WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY (6th)

The exciting thing about his year's team is their commitment to each other and their commitment to the things it takes to improve as a student-athlete. They work hard together and support each other on and off the track.

Kaylee is everything you want a student-athlete to be. In addition to her incredible talent and accomplishments on the track, she is an outstanding student. A hard working, committed, teammate that is a great leader and an example of what it takes to improve and have success in this sport. She is coming off a historic indoor season. Not only did she break the Winona State school records in the 1000m, Mile and 3000m, but she broke the NSIC record in the Mile. Heading into the NCAA Indoor Championships she is ranked second in both the Mile and 3000m.

Hanna is everything you want a student-athlete to be. She is a hardworking, committed, teammate that is a great leader and an example of what it takes to improve and have success in this sport. In addition to her incredible talent and accomplishments in her sport, she is an outstanding student. She is coming off of an indoor season that saw her break the school record in the 60m Hurdles and improve on her best performance in the Triple Jump moving up to 3rd all-time at WSU, as well as place in the top 8 at the NSIC Championships in both the Triple Jump and 60m Hurdles.
