Mavericks Advance to Final Four with Win over Ferris State

EVANSVILLE, Ind. --- The offense was out in force Tuesday evening as #2 Minnesota State scored 98 points to upend Ferris State 98-70 to advance to the NCAA Final Four.

With the win, MSU improves to 33-2 on the season. With the loss, FSU finishes its season with a 28-8 record. The Mavericks will now take on West Texas A&M in the NCAA Final Four on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (CST) at the Ford Center. This will be Minnesota State's second appearance in the NCAA Final Four, with the previous time coming in 2011.

By the second media timeout of the first half the Mavericks built a 19-13 lead as Malik Willingham netted 13 points, while Kyreese Willingham tallied six. The lead changed hands seven times in the opening 8:17, but four straight baskets from Malik Willingham put the Mavericks in front by six. The Mavericks continued to add to their lead as baskets from Elijah Hazekamp and Kyreese Willingham would put MSU up by 10 at 24-14 forcing FSU to call a timeout with 9:45 to go in the half.

MSU then put together a 16-6 run to go up 40-20 with 3:55 remaining in the half. Six different Mavericks scored during that stretch. Minnesota State would lead by at least 17 points through the rest of the half as it carried a 51-32 lead into halftime.

Kyreese Willingham paced the Mavericks in the first half with 16 points, while Malik Willingham notched 13 points. In total, seven MSU players reached the scoring column in the in the opening stanza as they shot 56.3% from the field, including a 7-of-11 (.636) showing from downtown.

Ben Davidson paced the Bulldogs in the first half with seven points, while Ethan Erickson posted six points. As a team, FSU shot 37.5% from the field in the first half.

The first three minutes of the second half saw the Bulldogs cut into MSU's lead as they outscored the Mavericks 10-2 to pull within 11 of MSU at 53-42. MSU answered right back over the five minutes as they went back up by 20 at 67-47 with 11:56 remaining as MSU outscore FSU 14-5, which included baskets from four different players.

The Mavericks would not look back the rest of the way as they led by as many as 34 points down the stretch before finishing with the 98-70 win. The 98 points scored by the Mavericks are the most they have scored in an NCAA Tournament game in team history.

Kyreese Willingham finished with a season-high 25 points as he connected on 10-of-13 shots from the field. Malik Willingham added 21 points of his own, to go along with four assists. Hazekamp added 14 points as he connected on 4-of-5 attempts from downtown, while hauling in six rebounds. Peeters recorded five steals and six rebounds also.

As a team, MSU shot 58.5% from the field, including a 14-of-23 (.609) from three point range. MSU's 14 three pointers tied its season high. The Mavericks also enjoyed a 17-7 advantage in fast break points, while passing out 21 assists.

DeSean Munson led the Bulldogs with 11 points, while Deng Reng added 10 points and nine rebounds. As a team, FSU shot 38.5% from the field while hauling in 37 rebounds.

With its win today, Minnesota State has established new program single-season records in scoring (2,974), three pointers made (318) and field goals made (1,095). MSU's 33 wins are also a single-season record.
