Augustana tops NSIC Swimming & Diving Coaches' Poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – For the second consecutive season Augustana University sits atop the NSIC Swimming & Diving Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The two-time defending NSIC Champions amassed 62 points and six first place votes to finish three points ahead of Minnesota State, which had 59 points and the other three first place votes.  St. Cloud State (49), Sioux Falls (42) and Concordia-St. Paul (35) round out the top five.

Augustana's Bryn Greenwaldt was named the NSIC Preseason Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season while teammate Avery Lommel earned NSIC Preseason Diver of the Year honors. Greenwaldt is the two-time NSIC Swimmer of the Year, while Lommel is the reigning NSIC Diver of the Year.

NSIC coaches rank each team from 1 to 8 with a first-place vote receiving 8 points, second place 7, third place 6, etc. Coaches do not rank their own team or vote for their own players in the preseason poll.

The NSIC sponsored women’s swimming and diving during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years with the aid of affiliated members. In 2016-17 season, NSIC Swimming and Diving returned as a seven team all NSIC sport. In 2019-20 the NSIC moved to eight participating members with the addition of Southwest Minnesota State and is now a nine-team league with the addition of Concordia-St. Paul in 2020-21.

The NSIC Swimming and Diving season will get underway on Friday, September 27 with the regular season culminating at the NSIC Swimming & Diving Championship on February 12-15, 2025 at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo, North Dakota.; hosted by Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Bryn Greenwaldt (FR/BK, Jr., Foley, Minn. / Foley HS) - Augustana
  • 2022-23 & 2023-24 NSIC Swimmer of the Year
  • Holds NSIC record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.52 swam in 2024
  • Part of three relays that hold an NSIC record (200 Free, 400 Free,  400 Medley)
  • Won three individual NSIC Championships in 2023-24 (50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Back)
  • 2023-24 National Runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 22.56
Bryn is special. She is coming off a summer where she competed at U.S. Olympic Team Trials and NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in High Jump. She placed second at the NCAA swimming and diving championship in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and was also the ninth place finisher in the 100 Backstroke and was on four relays that placed in the top 16. All of those things show how important she is from a performance perspective, but doesn't really tell how dedicated and hard working she is when the bright lights are turned off. Bryn is incredibly coachable and willing to try new things. She makes our team better as others see a top performer willing to get better.

Avery Lommel (Diver, So., Delano, Minn. /Delano HS) - Augustana
  • 2023-24 NSIC Diver of the Year and NSIC Diver of the Meet
  • Won both the 3-meter and 1-meter dives at 2023-24 NSIC Championships
  • Earned Second Team All-American honors at 2023-24 NCAA Championships in 3-meter & 1-meter dives
Avery is coming off a stellar first season. She should only continue to get better, which is crazy to say to someone who won both the diving competitions at NSIC Championships while also placing fourth and 10th at the NCAA Championships. Avery has a great outlook on diving, practice and competition that makes it very easy to coach her and see that the sky is the limit. Her teammates rally around her and she brings great energy to practice. I can't wait to see what is in her future as she'll continue reaching new heights. Avery is a generational talent who will be hard to reckon with this year and beyond!

COACHES' QUOTES & ATHLETES TO WATCH

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY

We return an incredible team that won the NSIC Championship and took ninth place at our NCAA Championships. We look to have more individual qualifiers represent Augie in Indy next Spring while building momentum off our top finish at conference when we head to Fargo in February. We graduated a small class and return a majority of our core and look forward to greater heights in my second year at the helm. We have made some adjustments in speaking with our team on how to elevate our program this year and that will show when championship season rolls around. I love this group and our team, so get ready to see a banner year from Augustana!

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

We have our largest roster in school history with 19 swimmers and 5 divers. Our returners, led by Captains Charly Horn and Farida Maher, have done an incredible job welcoming our newcomers, which has allowed us to have our strongest and most cohesive start in program history. The energy at the pool and in the weight room has been a solid combination of determination, electricity, fun, and hard work. The coaching staff is very optimistic about the potential this squad has to be a competitive force throughout the season.
Head Coach Rachel Busch
Farida enters her senior year after her strongest showing in the 23-24 season. The 23-24 co-swimmer of the year qualified for her first NCAA Championships in the 200 Free, where she also competed in the 100 Free, 500 Free, and 1,000 Free. She broke the NSIC Conference record in the 200 Free last year at the NSIC Championships. Farida is one of two team captains this season, and we are incredibly proud of the efforts she is taking to be inclusive of all of her teammates and help lead the fun, kind, and hard-working culture we emphasize at CSP.
Head Coach Rachel Busch
Caitlyn got our diving program off the ground and made an immediate impact on our team and in the NSIC. She was an NSIC All-Conference diver in both 1M & 3M, taking second in both events at the NSIC Championships. Caitlyn qualified for the Black Tuesday competition at the NCAA Championships, finishing 16th in 1M and 28th in 3M. She was a four-time NSIC Diver of the Week and is the current CSP school record-holder in both 1M & 3M diving. We are excited to have her lead the way for our incoming class of divers.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY

With this being my second year in the position I am excited to get our athletes ready to race and have some fun! We have added 10 new athletes to our roster including freshman and a transfer. Having more depth in our team will help us continue to grow not only in our competitiveness but also in team culture.
Head coach Abigale Loel
This season we are excited to have 10 talented athletes join our program. Peyton Wunderlich of Mesa Arizona joins us with several years of experience and many accomplishments. During her senior year of high school she was named AIA DIII state champion in both the 50 freestyle (24.08), and the 100 freestyle (53.11). During the first week and a half of training she has brought high energy and a competitive spirit to the team, we look forward to seeing what the season brings for Peyton now as a Marauder.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO

We added 13 freshmen and one junior transfer to our team. We love the energy of all the newcomers and our team's vibe to start the year. In addition to a strong group of returning athletes, we’ve added a lot of talented and event-versatile athletes who should help us be competitive in every event. It will be interesting to ramp up their training this fall and see what we can do once we start competing in Oct./Nov. It should be a fun year!
Head Coach Nathan Owens
Entering her senior year for the Mavericks, Abby has been a standout for our team at the conference and national levels. She’s a two-time conference champ in the 100 & 200 Backstroke, three-time NCAA Qualifier, two-time All-American, and in 2024 posted the fastest time in the country in the 50 backstroke lead-off leg of the 200 medley relay. Motivated for her final season, we’re all excited to see Abby perform this season.
Head Coach Nathan Owens
Aspen has been the Maverick's top diver for the past three seasons. She is a three-time National Qualifier and two-time All-American (honorable mention). In 2024 Aspen finished 11th at the NCAA championships on both 1- & 3-meter boards. Aspen holds the MSU school record for the 1-meter six-dive score. We’re excited to watch Aspen cap off her career with another banner year.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD

As we enter the 2024-25 season, we are fortunate to have great upperclassmen leaders that have solidified fantastic team culture. Our strong sophomore and first-year classes are bringing the energy every day and providing talent and versatility that will move the team forward. The coaches have really enjoyed watching the team connect and come together. We have been impressed with the effort given and team cohesion built, and look forward to seeing them compete.
Head Coach Charlie King
We are excited to have Fernanda join the Dragons. Hailing from Lima, Peru, she’s a strong versatile swimmer that will immediately impact our team. She specializes in the IM and Fly events, and will be able to contribute on relays as well. Fernanda has an unyielding commitment to excellence and shows it every day she practices. Go Dragons!
Head Coach Charlie King
Isabelle is one of the hardest working athletes we have ever had the privilege to coach. She exemplifies the work ethic of a champion that will greatly benefit her diving career. She has been purposeful in building her degree of difficulty and we are very excited for her to compete this season!
Head Coach Charlie King

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

I believe we have a pretty special team this year. From speaking with the coaches, the captains and those in the Northern/Aberdeen community they believe we have a pretty amazing group of ladies. In team bonding, practice and in general being around each other they are a pretty supportive and competitive bunch. We have an addition to our coaching staff with our graduate assistant Keely Lacina who is excited to shift from being in the pool to on the deck coaching. We have a large roster this year filling in some events and spots we have not been able to the past couple of seasons and that will have big impacts both at dual meets and at conference competition. From the distance events to sprint and diving we have a solid team. The swim and dive season is a long road, and this team is excited to get started.
Head Coach Kaden Huntrods
Abbegael is a freshman distance and backstroke swimmer out of Montana. She has been looking great in practice and eager to get into some races to show what she can do. She was the first of her class to commit and has been a great team player and supporter since coming out on her visit. We are excited to see Abbegael get her college career started and get some racing in.
Head Coach Kaden Huntrods
Jacie concluded last year with a record-breaking performance and wants to use that to launch into this season. We have more consistent training for her and that will be game changing for this season. Jacie is hungry for competition this year and will be adding to her dive list to increase the degree of difficulty and really stack the points.
Head Coach Kaden Huntrods

I’m looking forward to seeing how we grow and what we can accomplish as we move forward. I know we can do great things!
Head Coach Rickey Perkins
Inte Pas is an extraordinary student-athlete whose contributions to her team and her successes over the last three seasons make her a prime candidate pre-season player to watch in the NSIC. Inte has the combination of talent, leadership, dedication, and experience that sets her apart as a top swimmer in the conference and a role model for student-athletes.
Head Coach Rickey Perkins

We are entering our sixth season as a program; this is the largest, and likely deepest roster we have ever had. Our returning athletes have been working very hard and are eager to start competing again. Our first-year athletes have been doing a fantastic job showing up with great attitudes and are a competitive group of people. We look forward to continuing to grow and evolve as a team, and are excited to start competing against other NSIC teams soon!
Head Coach Marty Wahle
Carla had a fantastic freshman year at SMSU; with numerous first place finishes during the regular season and securing four-top eight performances at NSIC Championships (400 IM – 8th, 200 IM – 4th, and NSIC All-Conference finishes in 100 & 200 backstrokes – 3rd). We are looking forward to seeing even more progress and improvements from Carla this season.
Head Coach Marty Wahle
Aydrial is our lone returning diver and is bringing great experience into the 24-25 season. This past season she competed well on both 1 & 3m boards and continued to add challenging dives to her dive lists. While narrowly missing top 16 points at NSIC Championships, Aydrial has continued to make adjustments and is looking to improve throughout the season.
Head Coach Marty Wahle

ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY

We have an outstanding group of returning student-athletes who are ready to work hard and excited to compete this season. We’ve also brought in an incoming class of first years who will be able to make an immediate impact on our team’s performance. We’re excited about the leadership our returners will bring and can’t wait to start competing.
Head Coach Jeff Hegle
Ruthie is an outstanding student-athlete. She is the fastest 1000 and 1650 freestyler in school history and has been a consistent force of our distance group over the past 3 years. She’s been continuing to work hard for her senior season and we are excited to see what she will accomplish.
Head Coach Jeff Hegle
Kailey has been an amazing leader for our diving team over the past 3 years. As a 2 time NCAA qualifier she knows what it takes to compete at the highest level and provides consistency to our team. We’re excited to see Kailey continue to lead the team this season.
