St. Cloud State Women’s Soccer’s Season Comes to End in NCAA Sweet 16 Defeat to Washburn

Ichabods score game’s lone goal in 75th minute in 1-0 victory

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer dropped a 1-0 result to Washburn in the NCAA Central Region Championship on Sunday at the CSB Soccer Field in St. Joseph. The loss ends the Huskies historic postseason run, as the team won its first two NCAA Tournament games and hosted its first-ever NCAA game.
 
On a cold and snowy November day, a defensive battle ensued with a total of four shots on goal coming in the game's first 45 minutes, all from the Ichabods. SCSU had multiple scoring chances in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net. Washburn scored the game's only goal in 75th minute on a corner kick when Aubrey Tanksley headed in a pass from Bricelyn Betts.

  • Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) made five saves in net, helping the Huskies stay in the game for its entirety.
  • Junior forward Linsey Trapino (Verona, Wis.) had two shots on goal to lead the way offensively.

  • Sunday's contest was the first time SCSU has hosted an NCAA Tournament game and its first-ever Sweet 16 / regional championship game appearance.
  • In the first two meeting between the two schools, SCSU is now 0-1 all-time against Washburn.
  • SCSU moves to 2-3-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament games.
  • In 2025, SCSU records single season program records in wins (16), most games played (24), best win percentage (.771), most conference wins (11) and fewest goals allowed (14).
  • Strickland closed the 2025 campaign with a 16-3-5 record with a 0.58 goals-against-average, .854 save percentage and 12 shutouts. In arguably the best goalkeeper season in program history, she set single season program records in wins (16), shutouts (12), GAA (0.58) while ranking third in S% (.854).
