Sophia Taarud (Gr., Farmington, Minn. / Farmington HS) - Winona State University
  • Three-time All-NSIC performer, including first team in 2023 & 2024

Sophia is a true student/athlete. She missed track this past season due to injury, which was a major disappointment for her. Sophia is very resilient and has been training very well since May. Because of her injury she has implemented a lot of cross training into her daily routine. She has big goals for cross country and I expect her to be even better this season.

NSIC COACHES' QUOTES & PLAYERS TO WATCH

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY

Our women's team is talented, eager, and hardworking — a promising combination when harnessed effectively. I believe we have tremendous potential and am excited for the journey ahead as we work to fulfill that potential.
Head Coach Scott Tanis
Lindsey had a strong cross country season last year and carried that momentum into the track & field season, scoring in both the steeple and 5K at outdoor conference. Lindsey is not only a key competitor for us but also a valuable leader. Her enthusiasm and work ethic elevates the entire team.
Head Coach Scott Tanis

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITY

The 2025 Beaver cross country team is going to be a fun one to watch this season. We have a great group of returners coming back as well as a great freshman class! They always find a way to get it done and push each other to new heights. It's a fun group to coach and I know whatever goal they have as a group they can get it done.
Head Coach Mike Lynch
Maggie is one of those athletes that every coach would love to have on their team! She is dedicated, works hard, and has big goals! Maggie is also an amazing teammate and a terrific role model for the younger athletes on the team. She has big goals for her senior year, and I believe she is capable of doing anything she sets her mind to.
Head Coach Mike Lynch

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, ST. PAUL

The 2025 Golden Bear women’s team is built on belief—belief in each other, and belief in the process. Nyadio Chan’s steady rise has set a powerful example, showing what’s possible through patience and persistence. That energy is contagious, and it’s fueling a group that’s growing in confidence with every workout. We expect to be a different team by November—sharper, stronger, and ready to compete.
Head Coach Jonathan Breitbarth
Nyadio Chan’s journey is one of the most inspiring stories on our team. Early in her career, she was running over 30 minutes for the 6K—but she never stopped showing up and putting in the work. Last fall, she broke through with mid-23s and followed it up with a huge 800-meter performance at the NSIC Outdoor Championships. She’s entering her final cross country season with momentum, maturity, and a mindset that’s all about finishing strong.
Head Coach Jonathan Breitbarth

UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN

We are very young, but I believe we have the tools to be fairly competitive early on in our time in the NSIC. We should have a good mix of returners and freshman in our top 7 and a good, tight pack. The team has done an excellent job of buying into the program culture and training and I'm excited to see what they can do this fall!
Head Coach Jarvis Jelen
Lydia had an excellent high school career and has quickly bought into our program. I expect her to be competitive during her first year in college, likely leading our program along the way. I'm excited to see what she can do this fall in our first year in the NSIC!
Head Coach Jarvis Jelen

UNIVERSITY OF MARY

What excites me about the women’s team this year is that we are in an interesting spot to find a new identity and see what we can do and who all steps up. We are extremely young and have a lot of experience to gain. We lost a lot of amazing women and low sticks logistically so we will see how we step up and how gritty we can be.
Head Coach Chris Lessard
Tori will be entering into her first ever cross country season, high school included. She ran the 800 a few times in high school and had good times but has never ran cross country. She tore her ACL her senior year in and took all of last year getting healthy again. I think she is going to not only shock herself and her team, but the NSIC as well. Tori is excited and has serious grit. This season is going to be a new kind of experience for her, but she is ready for the challenge. She has developed at such a fast rate, it'll be fun to see how far she's really come.
Head Coach Chris Lessard

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA CROOKSTON

Last year our women’s team set a school record for fastest 6k team average and placement at the NSIC Championship meet. This year the trend should continue as we have a close-knit group of returners and six talented incomers joining us. We will be young as we only have one senior on the roster, but this team has never backed down from a challenge and I expect this year to be no different. I can't wait to see what the team will be able to accomplish!
Head Coach Steven Krouse
Through hard work and dedication, Madison set a new school record in the 6K at the 2024 NSIC Championship. Madison never settles and holds herself and teammates to high standards. Off the course, she has maintained a cumulative GPA over 3.8 and plans to attend Veterinary School upon graduation. Madison has been a building block for our program these past three years and I am excited to see what heights she is able to reach her senior year!
Head Coach Steven Krouse

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH

The Bulldogs are excited for another great fall season. This team is in a great spot and I'm looking forward to how we connect and build upon a solid foundation. We have an incredible freshmen class ready to make an impact right away and our returners have created an environment where the energy is high and there's a strong sense of purpose in everything we do. With the leadership of our returners and enthusiasm of our newcomers, this group has the ability to do something special this fall!
Head Coach Brette Jensen
Shae returns with a wealth of knowledge and experience for our program this fall. As a seasoned veteran, she is a vital member of our team and is greatly influential with her leadership abilities. Her work ethic and desire to be great has also played a huge role for our team and she is deeply committed to the process. I'm excited to see how she continues to shine this fall and beyond!
Head Coach Brette Jensen

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO

I am excited to see what the women can accomplish this season. We have a tremendous amount of potential. We have five of our top seven returning including All-NSIC and All-Region performers Alexi MacDonald and Madison Matzek, along with the addition of Ashley Overgaauw who was an NCAA Cross Country All-American last season. In addition to that group we have a talented group of freshman who are ready to come in and make an impact on the team.
Head Coach Jen Blue
I'm excited to see what Ashley can do this upcoming season! She is coming off an outstanding sophomore year where she earned All-American honors in cross country, was the NSIC Indoor Mile Champion and placed second in the 1500m at the NSIC Outdoor meet. I watched her confidence grow with each race and with the training she has been putting in the summer, I feel she is ready to do great things this year!
Head Coach Jen Blue

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MOORHEAD

This year’s team blends experienced returners with exciting newcomers, each contributing unique strengths. With that combination of talent, consistency, and team-first mentality, I’m confident we’ll see strong performances throughout the 2025 season.
Head Coach Ryan Milner
Katelyn enters the 2025 season as our top returner and preseason athlete to watch after a strong 2024 season. She posted personal bests in both the 5k and 6k, including a 22:32 at the NSIC Championships, now the ninth-fastest 6k in program history. We’re excited to see her build on that momentum and lead the way for our women’s squad this season.
Head Coach Ryan Milner

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

I am excited to see the growth of these women year over year. It will also be fun to see who can step up to round out our squad as we get later in the season.
Head Coach Steven Schultz
Bailey took a huge step forward from her freshman year to sophomore last year at the cross country distances. I am fully confident that she is ready to take another step this fall to compete with the best athletes in our conference.
Head Coach Steven Schultz

NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

We return some key veterans along with some talented freshmen. The 2024 season did not end how we wanted last year, so I know the girls are hungry to compete this season. If we can stay healthy and determined this season, we will have an exciting season ahead!
Head Coach Lynne Dingman
Emaleigh had a great freshmen year last season. Her dedication and consistency over the summer will set her up for a great year. She always holds herself to a high standard and we look for her to keep improving. We are excited to see what she can accomplish this season.
Head Coach Lynne Dingman

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS

The USF women’s team will be a fun mix of long distance and short distance girls, and they get to all work together to build a cross-country team. We have an exciting group of incoming freshmen that will help support and veteran class of girls ready to make a big impact in the NSIC!
Head Coach Eric Chilson
Mallory had an amazing end of cross-country last year, which in turn catapulted her into a great indoor and outdoor season! She ran the steeplechase at outdoor championships and showed lots of grit and determination. I am very excited to see her be a captain and step into a new role as one of the veteran leaders on the team.
Head Coach Eric Chilson

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

We have a good mix of experience on the team which will make things exciting as we develop throughout the year.
Head Coach Kirk Nauman
Maddy comes off a successful summer of training. She had a strong indoor and outdoor track & field season where she scored for the second year in a row in the NSIC steeplechase enroute to a school record. She was also broke the 1,000 m and was a part of the DMR records both indoor and outdoor during the 2025 season.
Head Coach Kirk Nauman

ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY

This year’s team brings a steady, hardworking approach to everything they do. They show up with the right attitude, take care of the details, and are committed to getting better every day.
Head Coach Gabrielle Brown
Abby is the kind of athlete every coach hopes to have—hardworking, dependable, and always leading by example. She shows up every day ready to put in the work and lift up those around her. Abby’s consistency and quiet confidence make her someone our whole team looks up to.
Head Coach Gabrielle Brown

WAYNE STATE COLLEGE

We have a core group of women's runners that have some of the best talent that we have had in several years. Hopefully, we can take that potential and turn it into actual results that show the level of ability that I think we have. If they can stay healthy and reach their full potential, then I am optimistic that we can improve on where we finished last year in the NSIC.
Head Coach Marlon Brink
Kaitlyn had a great freshman season, which I think helped to build her confidence going into this year. The experience that she gained last year will really help to set her up for an even better sophomore year. She has a ton of ability and is only just starting to scratch the surface of what I believe she can do as she develops even more confidence and understanding of how to race effectively at the college level.
Head Coach Marlon Brink

WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY

This team works very well together and they are very supportive of each other. We have Sophia Taarud, who was runner-up at the NSIC Championship last cross country season. Kylie Anderson had a great track season and is looking to be one of the top runners in the conference. We have a great supporting cast for the 3 - 7 positions. Ella Voit, Stella Rusch, Violet Schulties, Sam Harke, Lexi Teriwedo, Maddy Palmer, and Libby Ray should all make an impact for us. I am also looking forward to see how the freshmen class contributes.
Head Coach John Hibshman
