MSU came out strong in the first quarter, using tight defensive pressure to force eight turnovers and snag six steals. Hannah Herzig was instrumental, setting up several scoring plays, including a fast-break layup just 1:27 into the game. The team showed sharp ball movement, dishing out five assists and shooting 11-for-18 from the floor. Senior guard Adeline Kent nailed a 3-pointer at 3:46, and Natalie Bremer's late-quarter surge, highlighted by a 3-pointer and two free throws, widened their lead. While the Huskies kept pace initially with some solid bench scoring, the Mavericks ended the quarter up 26-18.
